Lara Fabian Growing Wings 2017 music video

She’s the Canadian-Belgian singer of Italian descent who represented Luxembourg at Eurovision 1988. And almost 30 years later, Lara Fabian remains one of the contest’s greatest success stories. Earlier this month, the multi-award winning and Billboard Hot 100 charting artist released “Growing Wings”, the first cut from her upcoming LP Camouflage.

The English language single is a major shift away from the quaint whimsy of 2015’s “Quand je ne chante pas”. A piano-led ballad, “Growing Wings” tells the story of someone who’s faced with a long list of trials and tribulations – a lover who loves another, an ocean they cannot swim, a wind-swept desert. In each case, the former Sanremo contestant sings of taking chances in the hope that things will work out “Leap of faith, growing wings, on the way down, before you hit the ground”.

But there’s a degree of ambiguity. Unlike Conchita Wurst’s similarly themed “Rise Like A Phoenix”, we’re never sure if the problems can be overcome. Is Lara actually sprouting wings, or is she vainly hoping to be saved before it’s too late?

The lyrics may give you pause for thought, but the song as a whole is lacking. Yes, it’s atmospheric and Lara’s vocals are as luscious as milk and honey. But there’s no wow moment, which is a shame since Lara definitely has pipes capable of giving us something truly special.

A sombre air hangs over the music video too. Opening with shots of the sea crashing against a pebbly beach, Lara mournfully sings to the camera while a topless male castaway is washed ashore. The two never meet. She strides through dramatic landscapes dressed as a Game Of Thrones extra while he prefers to dance beneath waterfalls. The whole clip takes place in twilight, but we never learn whether we’re heading towards a bright dawn or a long dark night.

We don’t have long to wait for more new music from the woman who famously came fourth to Celine Dion at Eurovision. Camouflage drops on 6 October. It will be Lara’s thirteenth studio album and her fifth in English.

However, you may have spent the summer listening to a Lara track unbeknown to yourself. Nestled away on Tears on the Dancefloor – British pop group Steps’ comeback LP – is a cover of Fabian’s biggest international hit “I Will Love Again”. Back in 2000, the song charted globally and even reached 32 on America’s Billboard Hot 100.

Was it really necessary to try to put her under Celine’s Shadow? At this stage in her career no one cares that she was 4th during the 1988 Eurovision contest. She has had bigger achievements after and I find it disrespectful that the Eurovision was used as her introductory and the whole Celine stuff. Lara is a great vocalist and a master performer. She knows her voice and i loved what she did on this song. No wow moment? I guess we look for different things in a song. I like the story… since we do not know how it… Read more »

I must admit, I thoroughly enjoy the glowing power ballads of the early 2000’s. While some see that as ‘too loud’, I saw it as vocal master-class. While the lyrics weren’t always delivering life altering meaning, the delivery of the song was always on point and often haunting (Adagio). There was true skill used for those songs. This album, may be a bit ‘blah’ for my taste. Electronic beats, restraint of voice capability, lyrics that songs may not impact an American audience as one would hope. I am worried about this project. The question may be, will current fans support… Read more »

The more I hear this new song the more it has grown on me. It is so sensitive and sweet. Can’t wait for the release of the new album.

In France, we like Lara, dispite of the judgment about her voice or her attitude. She’s ever here when other Eurovision’s artists disappear without a trace. She’s “human” , had a normal and discreet life with her family and sing for everyone. She’s a real artist, a beautiful soul and a great woman.

After years of hearing everybody complaining she sang too loud or that she screamed … she releases a song where she restrains her voice to let the words be the focal point …. yet … not a wow moment …
I guess she can’t please anybody. So what do you have left? The recycling-ABBA-the-winner-takes-it-all-dance-UK-late-90s-embarrassing-manufactured-trash-steps doing a cover of Lara’s only big English hit and ruining it as only they know how to do. When you thought the world couldn’t go any worse than this …

This song is different but she is a different woman too. She’s a mum, she’s almost 50 and she has done so many things in 30 years!!! I wish her success. Been listening to her for 20 years now.
