The Eurovision franchise is going global. With the news that Eurovision Asia is in the works, pop music enthusiasts the world over are speculating about which countries will join the fray. Among the countries we hope will take part is the Philippines, which is already home to a passionate and growing legion of Eurovision fans. In the event the country does participate, many of those fans have one act at the top of their wish list: Sarah Geronimo.

The princess of Filipino pop, Sarah has posted some impressive numbers. She has 12 platinum albums, has made contributions to more than 20 film soundtracks and has received 12 Awit Awards — essentially the Grammys of the Philippines. Miss Geronimo doesn’t play — she just slays!

Sarah has named Beyoncé and Celine Dion as some of her greatest idols. But unlike so many others, she doesn’t attempt to imitate them by screaming. She takes on covers with class and elegance, traits that come through in her ballads like “Maybe This Time”, which has been streamed nearly 20 million times on Spotify.

When she covers Celine or Whitney Houston, she transitions smoothly through the registers. Hitting the high notes comes so easily and so sweetly that you might think her throat is lined with honey.

Singing is one thing. Singing with emotion is another. But for Sarah the two are forever intertwined. That ability to tap into her own feelings may explain why she’s such an accomplished actress, who is regularly nominated for Best Actress at national film awards.

In act, in 2015 FAMAS — The Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences — named her as one of six “Iconic Movie Queens of Philippine Cinema”. Talk about a title! Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that her music videos routinely clock up millions of hits. The nation can’t stop watching her…

She is the Filipino sensation that could set Asia ablaze.

Sarah G., as she is sometimes called, came to prominence through television. In 2002, she won the televised singing contest Star For A Night when she was just 14. A star was born and a series of hit albums and singles unfurled before her, including “Forever’s Not Enough” — one of her most-loved tracks, which nods to Whitney. She has gone on to be a coach on The Voice of the Philippines and The Voice Kids Philippines. She’s even starred in her own reality series Popstar Diaries. The glare of the Eurovision Asia cameras would not startle her.

We should point out that she’s used to friendly regional competition. In 2012, she won the Best Asian Artist at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. The 29-year-old has also bagged Best Southeast Asian Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards and Best Asian Performer at the Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards.

Are you loving Sarah Geronimo? Has she got what it takes to represent The Philippines at Eurovision Asia? Could she slay the slick artists that Australia, India and South Korea are bound to field? Let us know in the comments box below.

For me we should send the best Pilipino singer who have the best vocal quality that can interpret the song gracefully..
Our bands is.not acceptable…
Parokya ni edgar and other pilipino bands have awful voice…they cant sing……..

Morissette amon is the best choice.is appel to international people are so strong…
In You tube she have the most highest foreign reactors among all the Pilipino singers….She will be the best choice.im sure…
Dont pick weak.voice..we have a lot of good singers here…

I dunno where this notion comes from that Sarah can’t sing live… she can. She’s also got a lengthy history of quality songs in her discography.

As an alternative, I would suggest that the Philippines send one of their rock acts like Hale, Gracenote, Parokya ni Edgar, or even Kamikazee.

The most interesting act in my mind, though, would be the rapper Gloc-9, although he generally raps in Tagalog. What an incredible artist.

Yes..Euro Vision Asia should pick Sarah G. as contender since she has a lot of experience in the Music Industry that will help her through the contest. Mentioning she won the Contest that started her Music Career way back 2000’s. She has done a lot in the Philippines it is time for her to go international not just the awards but also the Music of her own. Given the right songs..I bet she will pull through it. I was hoping for her to be the contender of Asia’s Song Contest….but that’s the way it is…I am hoping for Euro Vision… Read more »

Thanks for the feature Deban! In my opinion, Sarah Geronimo would be a good choice to begin with; after all she is one of the biggest pop stars in the Philippines! I feel like Philippines will take this seriously and would probably go with two routes in choosing a rep. One, as you mentioned, would go for the established artists like Sarah G. The other would be through talent shows. On top of what my compatriots suggested, I suggest wiwibloggs to check out other established Filipino artists such as Sam Concepcion, James Reid, Jake Zyrus (formerly known as Charice, although… Read more »

De-BUUUUUUUUUUHHHNNNN! Sarah Geronimo is one of an ideal contenders in Eurovision Asia but she’s too overrated and overexposed. When it comes to the Philippine Music Industry, you should go to those who already marked in the foreign ears. We have a lot of great singers but as what others’ said, our country is a junkyard of fine-talented singers. Not because I don’t want Sarah G. to compete because she’s overexposed, you should consider other artists. We also have “raw talents” trending throughout the country but is not recommended. So who should represent Philippines? Many will disagree that Regine Velasquez should… Read more »

For Sarah Geronimo why not. I know Nadine Lustre too but not sure if it’s a great choice. In any case, i’m ok for Sarah

I Think 4th Impact should compete because if the coming system is just like eurovision they’re going to almost certainly top the jury vote.
Just watch their X factor performances and you’ll see just how powerful their vocals are.

I respect all the greatest singers in the Philippines. If the management surely decide to pick Ms. Sarah Geronimo to represent the country, it is perfectly choosen one. She’s not competing with all the singers in the Philippines, she looks up to all of those singers, instead. She respect all her co-league’s… Versatility. Attitude. Humility. Values. Personality. It’s all in her. Thank You in advance if you choose her. GODBLESS!

Sarah Geronimo cannot sing live. We’re talking about an Angelica Agurbash level of bad live vocals.

I think he means that she is bad vocally. He even said “Angelica Agurbash level of bad vocals”. Angelica Agurbash is the woman that represented Belarus at Eurovision in 2005, and her vocals were awful.

As we all know Sarah Geronimo is not your typical singer, she is a performer who is bound to slay each of her performances because of her versatility. I must say it would be a sure shot for the Philippines to be represented by Sarah Geronimo in such competition.

Sarah Geronimo will surely be a perfect pick to represent the Philippines. She is not just a singer but a total performer who could slay each song like Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Little Mix, Fifth Harmony, etc. This girl will surely win it because she will surely be in it. Go and watch her performances in ASAP then, up to now. You can really see how she developed each and everytime. And that’s no doubt that she is still on top of her fame from the moment she won in a singing contest here in the Philippines up to now,… Read more »

It shouldn’t matter which singer the Philippines will send to the EASC, as long as their voice and interpretation fit the SONG itself. For goodness’ sake, it’s the Eurovision SONG Contest. Thus, it’s all down to the winning SONGWRITER, whoever that may be, to choose which singer will represent the country.

I think you should consider other options. Regine Velasquez, 4th Impact, Julie Ann San Jose, Rachelle Ann Go, and Jake Cyrus are also safe options for Philippines

So? Regine Velasquez was first before her and is known as the Asia’s Songbird. 4th Impact made a real impression in the UK crowd on X-Factor and lasted more than some of the competitors. Jake Cyrus is also an international star, is David Foster’s protege, and has been on TV show Glee back when he was Charice. Rachelle Ann Go is also a Broadway star and is making it big time. Heck, I could even name a few more artist more deserving than her to represent Philippines, like Yeng Constantino, Christian Bautista, Jessica Sanchez, Zia Quizon, Morrissette (Kikari’s suggestion), Sandara,… Read more »
