It’s the island nation that’s made it to the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final every year since 2015 and now has its sights set on making the Saturday night show for a fourth year in a row. And with superstar composer Alex Papaconstantinou, better known as Alex P, who’s co-authored hits for Latin stars Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias and Marc Anthony onboard, Cyprus could do just that.

CyBC announced the news today via their official Facebook page at 3pm local time, with a short video detailing Alex P’s illustrious international music CV.

But despite creating hits like “I Like How It Feels” and “Live It Up”, Alex P may be more familiar to Eurofans for his Eurovision hits.

Back in 2007 he helmed Greece’s top 10 entry “Yassou Maria” and in 2009 catapulted Azerbaijan into the top 3 by writing Aysel and Arash’s banger “Always”.

In his most recent appearance at Eurovision, Alex P wrote “La La Love” for Ivi Adamou, bringing Cyprus back to the Grand Final. CyBC will be looking to replicate Ivi’s success in Lisbon in 2018.

HOW WILL CYPRUS CHOSE ITS CONTESTANT FOR EUROVISION 2018?

CyBC confirmed in the announcement that Cyprus will pick its singer through a national final in January and that the song will follow in the weeks after that takes place.

The national selection is open to all Cypriots and people of Cypriot origin, with further terms and conditions available here.

Entrants can email [email protected] to put themselves forward to fly the flag in Lisbon in 2018.

This year’s selection process is a departure from 2016-2017, when CyBC chose to internally select their performers and songs too, commissioning entries from esteemed Eurovision composer Thomas G:Son.

But in the spirit of 2017’s contest, we say celebrate diversity and diverse songwriting choices too. If Alex P turns out a dance banger we’ll be dancing in the aisles of the MEO Arena next May!

Are you hyped to see Cyprus at Eurovision 2018? Do you think Alex P will pull out another killer entry for Cyprus? Sound off in the comments below!

Alex P? I didn’t expect that. Also, I didn’t know he has written other successful songs.

It’s a good start, I like the idea. But we have to see who the singer will be.

Good news. But I hope G:son won’t join him.

What a terrible idea… Let’s see what will come, but from the gist of it just another f-f-word song. So passé…

Live It Up flopped so hard that JLo had to shelve her album and re-record it all over, I don’t think it’s a great idea.

Eurovision-wise, though, he’s been very successful – Always, La La Love, Yassou Maria & Cool Me Down were all fan favourites (yes, CMD didn’t get chosen, but it probably would have got into the top 12 at Eurovision at the very least, even with Margaret’s vocals).

… cause an uptempo song which always becomes a fan favorite has to be the winner that, in this day in age, never wins … will a non-uptempo song ever become a solid fan favorite the same way a bouncy uptempo song becomes? Nahh .. it would ago against the “Eurovision-fandom-religion” mandement “Never worship a song below the 90 bpm or Dana International will punish your for eternity”.

He’s also behind Cool Me Down.
This is amazing news.

As long as he teams up with Robert Uhlmann, then we’re in business!

His biggest hit is C’est la Vie/Vivir mi Vida. (I think now there’s a Dutch version as well with Ali B and Boef).
Anyway this song is very catchy and the latin version was huge here in Spain and it has over 500M on youtube.
Looking good for Cyprus. They needed to change G:sson

He didn’t write alone all these hits you credit him. He worked together with various other Swedes. Is he allowed by CyBC to have co-composers on the Cypriot 2018 entry or does he have to be solo songwriter?
