She’s the Dutch soul diva who regularly performs with Eurovision stars Edsilia Rombley and Trijntje Oosterhuis. Now singer Berget Lewis has impressed The X Factor UK judges with her powerful audition performance of Prince’s “Purple Rain”.

Berget is part of the Ladies of Soul — an all-star Dutch singing group featuring the Netherlands’ 1998 and 2007 representative Edsilia Rombley. The Netherlands’ 2015 singer Trijntje Oosterhuis is a former member of the group and still regularly performs with the ladies.

Berget has also taken a shot at Eurovision. She competed in the 2003 Dutch national selection as part of the duet Lewis & Simon. Their song “Let’s Give It a Try” did not make it out of the semi-finals.

But it seems that despite her flourishing soul career in the Netherlands, Berget is dreaming bigger. She told The X Factor UK judging panel, “I think Holland is a little bit too small for me.”

Berget proved just how big she is with a powerful and emotional performance of Prince’s “Purple Rain”.

The judges were impressed. Simon Cowell told Berget, “That was incredible. Your voice is unbelievably good.” While Louis Walsh added, “I love my divas.” All four judges gave Berget a yes, so she’ll now move on to next week’s Boot Camp round.

Berget will be competing in the Overs category alongside Montenegrin diva Slavko Kalezic. And if online rumours are anything to go by, we’ll be seeing more of both of them in episodes to come.

“Purple Rain” has a strong connection with Eurovision acts on The X Factor. In 2008, it was the song that saved Ruth Lorenzo from elimination and established her as a power act on The X Factor UK. And in 2013, Dami Im‘s grand final performance of “Purple Rain” helped her win The X Factor Australia.

What do you think? How will Berget do on The X Factor? Share your thoughts below!

For one thing, it’s hugely difficult for an artist from the European mainland to break through internationally. For a British singer, basically if you’re big in Britain you’re big all over the world, with a few exceptions (Olly Murs, for instance).

And Berget Lewis isn’t even an A-list star in Holland… of the Ladies of Soul, she’s probably the least well known. That’s why the ‘Holland is too small for me’ comment is a bit stupid, there are soul singers with perfectly fine careers in the Dutch market. Even American singers who only perform in Holland..

I don’t want to sound mean, but why Eurovision artists go to talent shows if they’re already known in their countries?
For example, Saara is Finnish, how could she participate in the X-Factor in another country? Is this possible? Same with Slavko and Berget here.
(by the way Saara should go to Eurovision for Finland some time, she’s so good!)

I’ve loved Berget for a long time so I hope she is successful and the UK is able to recognize her immense talent. I’ve been hoping for years that she would represent the Netherlands at Eurovision. Maybe now that her profile is being raised outside of her country she finally will in the next couple of years!

Anyone else think that Saara Aalto has encouraged acts from around Europe and in the Eurovision sphere to audition?

It might be a good opportunity to revitalize X Factor’s global franchise. After Saara’s successful placing, they’re bringing it back in Finland where she will be a judge. Having Slavko might be good for the XF Adia’s future.
