She’s the Swiss star who served the dance track “Exodus” at the 2017 Swiss national final. Now songbird Shana Pearson continues to take flight with new music. She has released a track titled “Waves” as a follow up to her previous single, “Surrender”.

Shana is also known for her guest vocal appearance on American rapper Big Ali’s 2011 single “Distress (Sending Out an S.O.S.)”. But while that song brought edgy club sounds, Shana goes in a different direction here. “Waves” are meant to move, right?

The fifth release from her debut EP, Fearless, it’s a powerful electronic ballad with a moody modern sound. Shana bares her emotions, and exposes a fragility that isn’t totally stripped out by autotune. It ties in well with other tracks on Fearless, but also stands out lyrically, visually and vocally.

Speaking exclusively to wiwibloggs, Shana explains:

After the Swiss finals, life went on.  I released the four singles from my first EP as an independent artist, Fearless, My fifth single, “Waves” was dropped on Monday. The music video for this project was shot in Iceland. “Waves” is my favourite song on the album and after writing it, I wanted a location like Iceland to shoot the music video.

The lyrics of the song basically talks about someone I was with at the time, who I thought I could change. Waves can be destructive. This person was not only destructive to me, but also self-destructing. I believed that I could change him, or make him better person but his behavior was too strong. I have used waves as a metaphor to illustrate his behavior in this song, and to protect his identity.”

The visual treatment here is excellent.  With an opening shot that pans out to expose the landscape, “Waves” depicts an uncomfortable juxtaposition of barrenness and beauty.

It is dark, but at the same time serene. When Shana positions herself next to a crashed aircraft, it adds texture to the narrative of her lover’s behaviour (waves) overpowering any intervention.

“Waves” Shana Pearson – lyrics

I tried to help you through your pain
Thought I could take it all away
But you swim in your misery

I tried to save you from yourself
I know you’re only someone else
And your ocean’s so deep

And if those waves just keep on crashing down
I won’t be coming for ya
I can’t keep waiting for ya
And if those flames just keep on burning out
Won’t keep searching for ya
I can’t keep waiting for ya

Telling you I’m leaving now cuz you let me down
Put my feet back on solid ground
And I gave it all but you let me down
I ain’t got you now

You see you slowly got swept away
Like leaves on an autumn day
The spiral of your lies was too strong

Go and release all your demons
Hope that you can take control
Oh, I wish you the best

And if those waves just keep on crashing down
I won’t be coming for ya
I can’t keep waiting for ya
And if those flames just keep on burning out
Won’t keep searching for ya
Can’t keep waiting for ya

Telling you I’m leaving now cuz you let me down
Put my feet back on solid ground
And I gave it all but you let me down
I ain’t got you now

Looking back at the good old days
When we were young and free
Staring at the waves crashing in
Things have changed

It’s a nice track, it’s just a little random.

I’m not sure the song is particuarly suited to Iceland’s landscape, it feels like there is a bit of a clash.
