He’s been dropping a new single every few weeks ahead of the release of his next studio album.

And on Friday Sergey Lazarev kept the momentum going with “Whispering”, a quietly powerful track that shows off Sergey’s gentle side and the beauty of the Russian language.

As the title suggests, the song features plenty of whispers. The breathy opening leads to a light instrumental section that mixes digital sounds and romantic strings, creating a nice sound that’s at once symphonic and electronic.

“Friends! I am very glad to present you the next premiere from my new album — the song ‘Whispering,'” he wrote on Instagram.

“The new single is already available for downloading and listening in iTunes, Apple Music and Google Play! I really hope that this song will fall into your autumn mood.”

On Sunday evening the song sat at #7 on iTunes Russia, ahead of “Hold” from Dima Bilan and “Mi Gente” from J Balvin & Willy, having previously climbed to spot #3 hours after its release.

The song may be atmospheric and light, but the emotions on show are deep and at times dark.

“Coffee and alcohol do not erase the pain,” Sergey sings. “Only the aroma of your perfume. If love could have spoken there would be a whisper of contented words, in this silence the essence disappears…”

Renaissance Man Sergey has a lot more going on than his upcoming album.

He’s also been busy in the theatre, starring in “The Marriage of Figaro”, which took over the Pushkin Theater in Moscow on October 7 and October 8.

The comic opera, composed by Mozart, tells the story of a “day of madness” in a Spanish palace.

Sergey plays Figaro, the personal valet to Count Almaviva, who hopes to bed Figaro’s bride-to-be Susanna, a maid. Comedy and music ensue, with Sergey’s character finding a clever solution to his potential woes.

In between his Figaro performances, Sergey released an alternative version of the cover artwork for his latest single.

“In the end I chose, as you already know, another,” he wrote on Instagram. “But this one deserves attention too.”

The alternative cover shows an up-close painting of Sergey’s face — facial hair and all. It’s an artistic rendering that captures his supple lips and finely sculpted eyebrows rather well.

But ever-modest Sergey ultimately went for a simple cover that features solely the song’s title and his name.

What do you think of his latest tune? Are you loving it? And were you lucky enough to see him in The Marriage of Figaro? Let us know in the comments box below.

Hi William: quick correction he sings “Only the aroma of your perfume”. not “spirit”. I can see the confusion dukh in Russian in spirit, but dukhov is perfume.
