She’s one of Indonesia’s most decorated pop stars. And for her latest single, Anggun celebrates just some of her many achievements. Landing late last week, “What We Remember” gives us an early taste of the Eurovision 2012 singer’s upcoming English-language album, the first in her new deal with Universal Music Asia.

Co-written by Anggun herself, “What We Remember” mixes melancholy with nostalgia. “Can’t you see it in my face / The struggle and the grace / Some things I cannot hide” she sings over an electo-pop backing track with acoustic flourishes. But the “Echo (You And I)” songstress refuses to remain downbeat, “Though life plays hard to get / Somehow I keep the smile / And let my heart do the rest”.
Ultimately, our reward is an uplifting mid-tempo track which reminds us of the fragility and preciousness of time, “Nothing / Lasts forever / We only have what we remember”.
For the accompanying lyric video, Anggun chooses to focus on the brighter elements of the song’s lyrics. The clip zones in on the hitmaker’s finest moments from recent times by way of her Instagram feed. We see her grace the covers of Forbes and Rolling Stone, judging on Asia’s Got Talent, scooping a World Music Award, and being turned to wax at Madame Tussauds.
