Tamar Kaprelian 2017 Sareri Hovin Mernem Armenia Eurovision 2017

The rules for Depi Evratesil 2018 state that any citizen of Armenia — or Armenians living abroad — can enter the country’s national selection for Eurovision 2018.

And today Tamar Kaprelian — one of the most talented daughters of the diaspora — revealed her intentions to do so in a clear-cut Tweet to her fans.

“Hey guys: BIG NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!” the New Yorker wrote. “After all of the positive feedback to whether or not I should apply for Eurovision, I have decided to submit a song for Depi Evratesil!”

She also encouraged fans to follow her journey on Facebook.

Tamar Kaprelian at Eurovision 2018?

Tamar sent the rumour mill into overdrive on October 19 when she posted a snippet from a songwriting session on Twitter.

“[Facetime] writing session,” she said. “What could we be working on?”

A quick listen revealed an upbeat, ethnic song — perfect for Eurovision, along with the following lyrics. They show just how clever the Columbia-educated singer is — and make it clear the girl has lived.

Singing of love and pain — and that very dark space between them — she says:

It all began and I never quite expected
To be with you and to feel the need to stay
I’m hypnotised in a black hallucination
I was lost, I was searching for a way
In the untouched sands, under all the stars
We were holding hands, then we went too far
Don’t ask why
I get high

The song sounds very promising, so we’re not surprised she’s submitting it. And we’re not surprised that she’s ready to sing for Armenia as a solo artist either.

In 2015 Tamar was perhaps the most telegenic of all the members of Genealogy, the six-person group that represented the country in Vienna with “Face the Shadow”.

At the time Tamar was simultaneously studying for her university exams, meaning that she couldn’t fully immerse herself in the Eurovision experience while on-the-ground.

Tamar, who became an Armenian citizen in 2015, has maintained a close relationship with Armenia, setting up the Nvak Foundation, a summer music programme that works with young people in the country.

In a tweet sent earlier today, Tamar showed the scope of her ambition, releasing a tantalising video teaser that splices together footage from throughout her career.

We see young Tamar tickling the ivories in her 2010 video for “New Day”. But we also see images of the Tamar of today searching for her man in the desert for her “Noubari Boye” music video.

The tweet also tags @eurovision and @wiwibloggs — yasssss — and her team, which includes the noted choreographer and artistic director Arthur Gourounlian. We first encountered him at the Armenian Street Fair in London in the summer 2016, when he helped Iveta Mukuchyan throw down in tony West London.

Are you excited about Tamar’s decision? Are you going to get behind her bid? Let us know in the comments box below!

Tamar is great, but she will need a very very strong song to win especially since she’s not particularly big in Armenia. If Lilit Hovannisyan or any of the other big names in Armenia right now submit a song, she will definitely be lost amongst them.

Well, Tamar is really good option, but I think it’s time for Armenia to announce the “new name”. And it’s Asmik Shiroyan. She has everything what every artist need for Eurovision: stunning voice (sometimes her timbre reminds me of the timbre of African American jazz singers and that’s cool), beauty, charisma and great personality. She can perform any song in any genre. And it’s really cool. Just look at this: https://www.instagram.com/p/BaOgyhhgPwS/?taken-by=asmik_shiroyan

She participated in last year’s Armenian national selection, but Iveta kicked her out. It’s her time to shine.

Asmik is great but she’s also a copy of Iveta IMO. Tamar’s been around for quite a while, working with big record companies and seems to have a professional team working with her now. Other than her I would like to see a male artist from Armenia but they all seem to be too boring and generic.

I don’t think that Asmik is a copy of Iveta. They are two completely different singers. They even have different tastes in music and Asmik’s voice is more powerful than Iveta’s voice, as I think. And besides strong vocals, Asmik can bring a good show because she’s a good live performer as well. I don’t think that now it’s time to send male artist to represent Armenia. Because I don’t even know some suitable candidates… We can only wait for the national selection. There everything will be decided.

Tamar’s professional team is old school. Asmik is more fresh and up to date. And besides she is not copy of Iveta, she tried to make her her copy and she couldn’t. In general I think Asmik is better than Iveta and that’s why she kicked her out. This is my opinion

What you mean saying “Old school” and which is the “New School” standing behind Hasmik ? Really wonder what the “promotionnal” team of Hasmik is talking about if nobody has heard any of competing songs? Who is Hasmik in general so overrated by her “fans” raping all possible polls? Just a girl from a talent show who is just fine! It’s time to wait for the songs and let the best song and performance win! If Tamar’s and Hasmik’s entries will be on the same level I’ll vote for Tamar taking into account her background, her support of Armenian children… Read more »

And another post from the promotionnal team of “Hasmik Shiroyan” ! Armenia MUST NOT ANNOUNCE NEW NAMES ARMENIA MUST CHOSE THE BEST POSSIBLE SONG-ENTRY. As for Hasmik Shiroyan there are by far more talanted new names who deserve Eurovision more. For example:
Vigen Hovsepyan
Suren Arustamyan
Srbuk
Neymra
etc

Good. Genealogy was a tragedy and I’d love to hear her solo contribution instead.

Agreed.
It is amazing that considering how bad Genealogy was that Tamar stood out for the right reasons. Definitely deserves the opportunity.

Am I the only one?

“Don’t ask why/I get high” – Does Tamar making a Sirusho-ish high tempo ethno-pop return? Something that I’ve never expected from her. The song that she has submitted to Depi Evratesil, is it for herself or anybody else?
So many questions. And I lover her so much!

Her song might be Qele-Qele alike cause Der Hova (Qele-Qele composer) is co-composer here as we can see.

I didn’t like Genealogy at all, it was dull and boring, and the song was simply a crap. But as usual Armenia passes the semifinal. Anyway, whoever represents Armenia in 2018 I hope to have a great song like in 2016 and 2017 (Both Iveta and Artsvik were great)

I’m a fan of her work. “The Other Side” still gets to me. 🙂
Love and pain is indeed what she does very well, in songs. I look forward to hearing the entry, if it happens.
