Loic Nottet Amir MTV EMA 2017 Eurovision winners

On Sunday, some of the music world’s biggest names descended on London for the annual MTV Europe Music Awards. A slew of Eurovision stars were among their ranks, with most going home empty-handed. However, it was a good night for Loïc Nottet, Amir and Magdi Rúzsa.

Loïc Nottet — Best Belgian Act

He kick-started Belgium’s Eurovision renaissance back in 2015. And after teasing us with new material last year, Loïc Nottet hit the ground running in 2017. His critically acclaimed album Selfocracy dropped in the spring, charting in both Belgian regions, France, and Switzerland. Most recently, he released the spooky “Doctor” for Halloween.

Loïc saw off competition from Bazart, Coely, Lost Frequencies and Oscar & The Wolf.

ARTY'S! We won! Thank you!!! ??? Let's go to LONDON! #london #mtvema2017 #bestbelgianact ??

Amir — Best French Act

After several years of misfires, Amir brought France back into contention at Eurovision 2016. “J’ai Cherché” became a colossal hit, and his subsequent LP Au cœur de moi broke the French top ten. One wouldn’t begrudge the former dentist a quite 2017, but he’s been busier than ever. He collaborated with American hitmakers One Republic in the summer, and last month he released his highest charting album to date Addictions.

His MTV EMA 2017 trophy will sit alongside the one he picked up at last year’s event. He won the prize ahead of Soprano, MHD, Petit Biscuit and Feder.

Magdi Rúzsa – Best Hungarian Act

Having taken a year off in 2006, Hungary returned to the 2007 contest in style. Magdi Rúzsa secured the country a ninth place finish, after coming second in the infamous semi-final of death. The past decade has been good to the “Unsubstantial Blues” songstress. She continues to enjoy chart success, including 2017 single “Éden”. Between 2013 and 2015 she acted as a judge on A Dal.

Magdi beat fellow Eurovision and A Dal performers Freddie, Gabi Tóth, and Joci Pápai. The fifth nominee was Kowalsky Meg A Vega.

In addition to the three Eurovision stars, Ermal Meta scooped the top prize in Italy. He lost out to Francesco Gabbani at Sanremo 2017. This time, their fortunes were reversed.

Jessica Mauboy — one of the Eurovision 2014 interval performers — took the award for Best Australian Act.

MTV in America is not the great music channel it once was. For the most part it barely shows music videos anymore. It rarely seems to have anything to do with music anymore. It’s all reality based programs now. Rather than Music TV I think think the M stands for Mature TV. Anyhow, does MTV in other countries still show music video’s?

Well done, Loïc Nottet! Congrats for the award, well deserved! He should be back as Belgium’s representative in 2019, he is a potential winner! I’ve seen his latest music videos and this guy is amazing, he’s so talented and his videos are meaningful. I see him as the male version of Sia!

Well done to Francesco Gabbani for the nomination – continues to be a great year for him. Would love if he toured outside Italy – Ireland Francesco?!

If you’re including the singers from national selections, then why not to put Ermal Meta on the list? I mean, he came third in Sanremo this year and the winner is offered a chance to represent Italy in Eurovision, so he’s connected to ESC as much as, let’s say, Gabi Toth is.
