Today the Wiwi Jury – our in-house panel of music unprofessionals – travelled to Tirana to take vocal lessons with our friend Lindita Halimi. After our throats were feeling a little worse for wear, we decided to take a break by reviewing the Junior Eurovision 2017 entry for Albania, “Mos ma prekni pemën” by Ana Kodra. Does Ana have what it takes to bring the Junior Eurovision trophy to Albania for the first time? Read on to find out…

Albania’s Junior Eurovision 2017 song

“Mos ma prekni pemën” reviews

Angus: Not every JESC song has to be an upbeat banger or an appeal to maturity. Some are born to be sweet, light and melodic and Albania’s entry this year falls into that country. It has much to commend it: compelling ethnic touches in the chorus, an even more compelling singer in Ana and plentiful opportunities for her to vocally shine to boot. Running order will make all the difference for this, as it’s simplicity could prove limiting among some of this year’s more boisterous entries.

Score: 6.5/10

Antony: Ana should be praised for her strong and bold voice. However the song, whilst having a gentle quality to it, lacks a cohesive production. I am hopeful that song will be elevated on the night, aided by the singer’s brilliant voice.

Score: 4/10

Deban: “Mos ma prekni pemën” is one of the most cleverly composed entries this year. Packing in a memorable chorus, its melody has peaks and valleys, making it a JESC earworm. However, I would have preferred a softer, soprano-style delivery. The gritty vocals that Ana Kodra drops on this may be endearing, but it also sounds unpolished. Still, she looks like she’s having fun, and that’s what really matters.

Score: 6/10

Josh: Albania is delivering what it knows best – a powerful ballad with a strong vocal. Ana’s voice is impressive for a pint-sized girl. She’s delivering some strong notes that many singers with more experience dream of having. Is the song memorable? No. But will Ana’s voice be enough to bring some points her way? I think so.

Score: 4.5/10

Robyn: “Mos ma prekni pemën” starts off sounding like much isn’t going to happen, but it slowly builds, unleashing layers of drama, sass and some really catchy hooks. At the heart is young Ana Kodra. She may be young, but she her voice has surprising depth. She’s not afraid to serve gritty and grunty vocals when required! Based on Albania’s JESC track record, this should be a highlight in Tbilisi.

Score: 8.5/10

William: Ana seems so sweet and fragile — an adorable child who could front an ad campaign for Gap Kids Albania. Initially I worried the song might be bland. But as it progresses it really builds as becomes more interesting with each verse. I love the grit in her voice during the chorus and, for whatever reason, the Albanian language sounds extra lovely. With a sensitive revamp and a bit of practice with the backing vocalists, this could create magic on stage in Tbilisi. I hope it does.

Score: 7.5/10

I really love this, the revamp and music video melted my heart, this song is so silly, and I absolutely love it. Very underrated and I hope it won’t finish last, even though it doesn’t have the best production nor is it the most catchy.

Overall I like the song but the bridge part really puts me off for some reason.

I like the begging of the song, but when the chorus stars I’m like super dissapointed. I don’t know if I like her vocals, they are so harsh… It’s not bad, but it’s not good as well. It has a nice message tho. I give it a 5/10 my top now:
1. Poland 7,5
2. Italy 6,5
3. Cyprus 6,5
4. Ukraine 6,5
5. Serbia 5
6. Albania 5
7. Portugal 4

What a shame they didn’t have enough time this year to make a total revamp, now the production is quite bad, there would have been some much potential in the song.

It’s not a bad song, it has the message,it has the vocalist and it has an endearing melody. It does need a revamp and a polishing though. Give it a stronger beat and coordinate the backing vocals and you’ll have it. As it stands now,

The song needs some polishing but over-all, it’s one of the better ballads in the JESC 2017 line-up I’ve heard to date.

Its a beautiful song I have to say, nice tune and message. However, agreeing with William, practice with backing vocalists and a revamp would be great!
