At Eurovision 2005 he sang as part of the duo “Walters & Kazha”, taking Latvia to fifth place — which remains one of the country’s best-ever finishes.

And now singer Valters Fridenbergs finds himself at the centre of public attention yet again — this time for his courageous fight against cancer.

Valters received his shocking diagnosis one year ago. Following three rounds of chemotherapy and an operation, there was hope that he’d pulled through. But this summer brought bad news, as the cancer had reached his lymph nodes, progressing in an even more harmful way.

Unfortunately the treatment available in Latvia is only stabilizing his situation. As such he needs to seek treatment abroad at the Charité Clinic in Germany. It’s one of the largest university hospitals in Europe and has the facilities and specialists who can help Valters take back control of his health.

It comes with a price tag: The initial therapy costs 17,500 euros, which will then lead to a specific treatment plan, which will cost tens of thousands more.

Thankfully Latvians are showing their goodwill for the singer and in just one day have already raised more than 100,000 euros on ziedot.lv.

The Latvian media has gotten behind the beloved star, with LTV Panorama recently publishing the following appeal.

For years Valters has played a role in helping raise funds for sick children living with a variety of conditions. The charity shown towards him reflects the country’s appreciation for all of his efforts.

If you would like to help Valters receive the treatment he so desperately needs, you can visit the official campaign page and make a donation.

I wish all the best to Valters, with much love from Athens, Greece.

P.S. The extremely small number of comments under this article is truly indicative of how indifferent, cold, and alienated we have become.

ESC community should help him. If we could help Anja with her stolen songs, we can donate a few euros to save his life.
