The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017 sped by in a flash of LEDs and high notes. Australia’s Isabella Clarke worked the runway in a silver catsuit. Albania’s Ana Kodra made it clear you should stay away from her tree. And Portugal’s Mariana Venâncio served us adorable emoji realness. But in the end it was Polina Bogusevich from Russia who won the day with her song “Wings”.

Tacking important social issues — including domestic violence and abuse — she served a pitch-perfect power ballad backed by major power. It was all accompanied by interpretive dancing and a dramatic LED, that saw her bedroom splitting in half because of tensions at home. As wiwiblogger Robyn wrote ahead of the show:

“Russia delivers. ‘Wings’ is a sophisticated pop ballad, given a flawless vocal from Polina. Even the key change doesn’t feel too cloying — and given how dramatic the song is, it makes sense. The only weakness is perhaps the English language section. Honestly, the song would be as strong without it. But by the time the song comes along with the gorgeous harmonies of the ending, all is forgiven.”

Speaking to wiwiblogger Rezo Mamsikashvili ahead of the final, Polina told us that she never expected to win the national selection in Russia earlier this year.

“I was very ill when I was singing — I had a temperature and a lot of illness,” she said. “I was crying — I was so tired from this. I couldn’t believe this. I thought I would drop. Doctors told me, ‘You won’t sing — you are very bad’…but when I won I couldn’t believe it. I thought I would just fly home with nothing.”

Televote results

Our “online voting” poll, which we opened shortly after online voting opened on Friday, proved accurate, with Fource from The Netherlands winning the televote segment.

1. The Netherlands 112 points
2. Malta 81
3. Australia 79
4. Belarus 69
5. Ukraine 67
6. Russia 66
7. Poland 61
8. Armenia 56
9. Italy 49
10. Portugal 45
11. Serbia 44
12. Georgia 42
13. Ireland 42
14. FYR Macedonia 41
15. Cyprus 40
16. Albania 35

For the first time ever, JESC officials allowed voters to cast their votes prior to the actual show. On Friday the online voting portal opened. After sitting through a brief recap that showed clips of each act rehearsing, fans could choose between three and five acts each. If they needed extra info to make their decision, they could choose to watch one-minute clips of each individual act rehearsing (rather than a full-on recap of all 16).

Initial voting closed just before performances started this afternoon. It re-opened immediately after the last act.

It wasn’t without incident though. Within seconds tens of thousands of fans rushed to vote again, overworking the server which seemed to freeze or crash.

Interestingly, viewers were allowed to vote for ANY country they wanted — and that included their own.

What do you think of the results? Were you surprised by the jury or the televote? Let us know down below!

Georgian guy hella belted Bruno Marseyo vibes! Nice atmo mantained. Russian singer got fixed after start but it still didn’t convince me as winning song unlike last year. Solid perfomance. Netherlands were good but that’s all, I expected them to look more enjoyable and sound better yet they’ve looped that choreo and imo that wasn’t right. Belarus… It’s weird they’ve ruined what they’ve had in video and how it akk sounds, they really need to check Ukraine in how to create mood. Messy voting system, again. A wonderful show, nicely presented, an excellent stage, and a well-deserved winner… Just disappointed about two things: (1) Cyprus definitely didn’t deserve last place and (2) my favorite, Albania, not placing higher. Sigh!

I’m afraid I stopped watching half way through. The quality of song wasn’t bad, just mediocre. The lack of participants suggests that maybe JESC like all teenagers is moody. I think a major shake up for 2018 or they’re will be more withdrawals

I’d rather there’d be no withdrawals. 😉

About withdrawing: Portugal competed for over 50 years in Eurovision before they won. Sometimes you get good results, sometimes bad. Macedonia and Cyprus should stay in JESC and learn of their mistakes.

Macedonias mistake this year was the song and Cyprus was the false singing. Russia and Netherlands didnt have any mistakes and they got 1 and 4 :). Just my opinion.

I’m afraid that in both esc and jesc, songs must be serious or they are not good enough. I wonder when this SAD era will end. If in Lisbon will win another pretentious/artistic/whatever song, I will die. After Jamala/Salvador/Polina I will die if another mortuary song will win.

Is this true? Germany is in big5 in esc, but they are yet to debut in jesc? Why? Probably they have very strict rules about child work. Is this it? Still in esc they send those teenagers like Lena and Jamie Lee.

There was really nothing to dislike about how things went down. I didn’t have clear faves from the get-go so I wasn’t too let down by the eventual results. However, I am sad that Ireland got their lowest placement yet after reaching a contest high last year, but even sadder for Cyprus.

However, I do think that with three-fifths of each of the national juries being adult jurors, they overpowered the online vote and those of the kid jurors. I would have preferred an equal jury composition of kids and adults for that 50%.

Russia a good song with stong vocals that reaches the voters of Europe more than Russia in 2016 with song I’d loved previous that year and not won the contest unfortunately.
My favorites this year where Belarus ( witch song perfectly fits at the Eurovision, with love please!)
And second my own country the Netherlands, with good vocals and strong song for all ages!
That’s why I’m sad with this years winner Russia but I have to admit her vocals where good.

Love her song and she really slayed vocally. 3) Georgia – it was a good performance. Russia was not really my favourite, but I can see why they won. The song and vocals were good. But how the Netherlands won the televote is a complete mystery to me, it was absolutely my dead last. Vocally, it was extremely weak, and the song was boring (those three minutes lasted for ages). The worst part are the lyrics. From a musical standpoint, it is quite understandable that Russia and Georgia had more jury appeal than The Netherlands and Malta.

To be fair, before the show I thought that Malta might get the juries on board, but the live performance was a tiny bit annoying to be honest.

But I don’t see any anomalies in the results big enough to justify conspiracy theories.

I don’t think it’s accurate to say that juries “crucify” Russia in the adult contest. Looking back a recent entries:

2016: Did we really expect juries to fall in love with that made-for-Eurovision act?

2015: If I remember correctly Russia did well with juries.

2014: Almost nobody liked Russia’s song pre-contest. Juries ranked it something like 14th which was remarkable.

1) Very very happy with Russia’s victory. Sure, the song is not original (very Sia-like), but her performance was superb and overall was the strongest act of the night. 2) Georgia again won the jury vote thanks to the vocal abilities of the act they sent. Vocally, it was definitely the strong act of the night, but the song doesn’t have much of an appeal which explains the low viewer rating. 3) The dutch televote victory can purely be explained by the fan vote of little girls who were crashing on the four ken dolls. You’re seriously going to throw shade at a 9 year old who delivered a very good vocal performance despite having to skate through it all? No, kids voted for Netherlands, because a boyband with modern and catchy song is much more interesting for them than all these solo girls with ballads (70%of all songs). I hope that every country will check it and they will choose more interesting entries in next years like Fource than all these ballad girls. The show is so boring after all.
