It’s the country who has already made a major impact in the three years they’ve been competing in Eurovision. Now the land down under is about to reveal their act for Eurovision 2018. Australia‘s broadcaster SBS will announce their act for Lisbon this coming Monday.

The December reveal is unprecedented for SBS. In previous years the Australian act for Eurovision — and their song — has been revealed in early March.

But it’s likely that Monday’s announcement will be for the artist only, with their song to be released later in 2018.

As previously reported, SBS has used internal selection to choose their artist for Lisbon. The possibility of a national final had been discussed, but SBS has again gone internal for budgetary reasons.

SBS released a teaser video, featuring commentators Myf Warhurst and Joel Creasy discussing the act for Lisbon. Joel whispers a suggestion to Myf, who responds, “Nah, you’ll never get them. Never.” This suggests SBS may have another big name lined up to represent Australia in Lisbon.

As always, speculation has run wild on who might represent Australia, including singer and Australian Idol participant Ricki-Lee Coulter. Last month, on an Instagram live feed, she expressed enthusiasm for doing Eurovision, telling fans, “Let me at it, is all I say. Let me at it!”

While earlier in the year, Australia’s 2014 singer Jessica Mauboy revealed she’d love to return to Eurovision one day.

So who will be the next participant for Australia be at Eurovision 2018? Will it be a female or male act? A duo? Or even a group? All will be revealed this Monday, 11 December.

Australia at Eurovision

Broadcaster SBS has regularly screened the Eurovision Song Contest since the early 1980s, but it wasn’t until 2014 that Australia made its first official appearance at Eurovision. Australian Idol star Jessica Mauboy performed “Sea of Flags” as the interval act in the second semi-final in Copenhagen.

Australia made its competitive debut the following year. Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian made a splash in Vienna with the funky “Tonight Again”. It placed fifth in the grand final.

The following year, X Factor 2013 winner Dami Im deliver the power ballad “Sound of Silence”. It was a huge fan favourite and won its semi-final as well as topping the jury vote in the grand final. The song placed second overall.

And earlier this year, X Factor 2016 winner Isaiah Firebrace performed “Don’t Come Easy” in Kyiv. It was another hit with juries, and gave Australia its third consecutive top-ten finish, coming in ninth place.

So who do you think might represent Australia at Eurovision next year? Let us know in the comments section down under!

Guys – the word “them” especially in Australia can be used to refer to a singular person ie. I’ll go call them, I’ll get them, I saw them yesterday e.t.c.

There’s of course a chance that it could be a duo, but don’t rule out there being a solo artist as well.

I guess we’ll find out tomorrow!

If you listen carefully. z the lady says ‘them’ and the guy says ‘him’ clearly they’re doing a good job at keeping this secret and are trying not to give anything Way so we shouldn’t be liken ‘he said him, so it’s a guy’ well it’s not sure because the lady next to him also said ‘them’ meaning that it could be a group or a duo also. There’s so many big names in Australia that it could be anyone. I heard the whisper carefully tho and heard ‘The Veronicas’ 🙂

I remember Ricki-Lee back from her days on the second season of Australian Idol. She was my favourite that year and I was shocked to see her voted out so early. I’m more of an alternative/indie kind of person, but considering her raw vocal talent I’d be content to see her have her day in the sun. Just give her something different and new. I can see her being paired off with Peking Duk as producers, an Australian electronic-dance duo, as it’s something that can be an interesting turn of events and something that could play to her strengths and… Read more »

The lady announcer tho said ‘them’ meaning that’s its more than just 1 person. Plus she isn’t that big of a name. Yes she may not be unknown but she’s not a big big name.

Not her new single, just an unreleased song that was left off her ‘Where I Am’ EP. It was leaked on Soundcloud by the original producers, MSquared Productions (Michael Paynter & Michael DeLorenzis).

They’re the same people who produced ‘Where I Am’ and the rest of the EP.

“The December reveal is unprecedented for SBS. In previous years the Australian act for Eurovision — and their song — has been revealed in early March.” It’s actually quite logical, now they are participating with us since 3 years (ESC) and 2 years (Junior) and the fact that next year few countries will do an internal selection “force them” to communicate more. I hope a good choice with personality because except Guy the others entries were to cold without emotion for me. I hope it’ll be diiferent than Isaiah’s song that I disliked. Good luck.

Because Australia, as an associate member of the EBU, has been invited to take part.

Besides, for a full EBU member to participate in any Eurovision event, the prospective broadcaster has to be based within the broadcasting area of the EBU, which comprises of all of Europe, Asia Minor, the Caucasus region (which include’s Nina Sublatti’s home country), Russia west of the Ural Mountains, majority of Southwest Asia (including Iraq), and much of North Africa.

I’m pretty sure Armenia is also not part of Europe. Geographically Cyprus is part of Asia (but not culturally), and there are many other countries that are eligible to participate from the middle east, but they choose not to for political reasons. It amazes me that at the end of 2017, there are still dumbasses that don’t understand how Eurovision works and ask this question again, and again, and again.

why don’t you just enjoy the songs in the song contest that you’re following (as I see)?? why is it so important whether the country is european or not? They are going to participate for the FOURTH time already, are you from Mars or what? Also Australia is not the only non-european country in Eurovision. Both Armenia and Israel have NO land in Europe.

@ninasublatti to your surprise Israel and Armenia also have nothing to do with Europe, neither geographically nor culturally. But both of these countries have been participating in Eurovision for years. Plus this is also not the first time that Australia participates in the contest as well.

Israel has nothing to do with Europe?
Dear boy, three million people in Israel are of the Ashkenazi descent, who immigrated there after the Holocaust.
They are very well tied with Europe, genetically, culturally and historically. Boom.

I doubt it. She already turned it down in 2016 that’s why Dami Im had to be immediately asked if she would want to do it. That’s why its best if we just don’t mention her ungratefulness here.

In fact, Joel really said ”I’ll text THEM”. It is subheaded in the video shared by SBS Australia xP Then, we can suppose that the next aussie act will be a duet or a group. But as you said, it could be a fake banter from Joel 😉
