Anouk Waylon The Voice Holland Battles Double Elimination

She’s the woman who brought the Netherlands back into the A-league at Eurovision 2013. However, after the latest edition of The Voice Of Holland, the Dutch public’s love for Anouk may be tempered just a bit.

The “Birds” songstress is one of four coaches on the current season of the show, and during this weekend’s battle round she was tasked with choosing her team for the live shows. However, she was not impressed by the talent on offer.

For their battle, Nina ten Kate and Nikita Pellencau tackled Clean Bandit’s Zara Larsson collaboration “Symphony”. And Voice custom dictates that their coach — Anouk — would pick one of them to progress. But in a shock twist, she sent both aspiring popstars home — a first in the series’ eight year history!

Anouk sends both her singers home

The Sad Singalong Songs artist already has a reputation as a tough cookie — she’s frenemies with both Ilse De Lange and Trijntje Oosterhuis.

And on Friday she took that reputation to a whole other level. She did not hold her tongue.

“I did not think it was spectacular”, she said of the pair’s battle, “I thought it was a bit boring”.

The star commended Nina for being “super sweet” before describing her vocals as “below par”.

On the contrary, Nikita was told that her “voice is there”. But she declared that the young hopeful’s performance was “bad”  and “not good enough”.

The two contestants along with Anouk’s fellow panellists and the studio audience looked on in shock as she proceeded to send both ladies home. Cue dropped jaws across the nation.

As if that wasn’t enough, there was another twist to come.

One of the three remaining judges swooped in to rescue one of the eliminees. And it was Waylon — 50% of Eurovision 2014’s the Common Linnets and the Dutch representative for Lisbon 2018.

He decided to ‘steal’ Nikita Pellencau, so she is still in the game. Nina ten Kate‘s The Voice of Holland journey is over.

The reactions on Twitter were mixed. Some praised Anouk’s honesty and courage while others threw some not so nice comments her way.

What do you think? Was Anouk right to send her two pupils home or did she go too far? Let us know in the comments below.

Anouk is an amazing singer and songwriter. Give Anouk some respect she deserves. You either agree or disagree with Anouk, i know who i would agree with though.

As far as the VOICE is concerned I really love the concept of the rotating chairs. In that proces the judges are forced to focus on the contestants’ voices. The battles and all the other shows are like other contests and the focus from then on is on the packaged deal in order to come up with an all-round popartist wannabee who can actually sing. If A’nouk’s judgement had been solely based on vocal skills then at least one of them would certainly have gone through to the Live Shows. I appreciate honesty, but I would like judges to focus… Read more »

To clear things up a bit, she gave them many tips and tricks, but she felt like they did not use those. She said that if they weren’t able to use them now they wouldn’t be able to do so in next week’s show, so she felt like she couldn’t help them anymore, which is why she let both of them go. I feel like she made the right decision, if she already knows she won’t pick them for the live shows they’re then why pick one of them?

Anouk can’t forgive Ilse and Waylon for doing better than her in esc. She is jealous on them (together or separate) She is attention seeker and Waylon knows that and saved one of the participants. Anouk, you look like a grandmother more and more, and it’s only because your inner envy.

She’s turning off all the viewers at home from voting for her team to win. In the US, all JHud did was throw her shoes for ppl at auditions and insultedthe resident coaches, Blake and Adam, now she’s got no acts in the grand finals. Anouk basically just signed up another series to lose again.

These shows aren’t good at finding talent anymore.

It just seems like she’s deliberately being a bit of a bully.
I’ve not watched the voice uk in years so I’m not sure of the recent rules.
She picked them at auditions and picked the song.
Obviously she’d have seen the rehearsals and heard their performance beforehand.
Or maybe she’s just a lousy mentor and never bothered to think the song choice through or put any effort into the battle.
Clearly she’s not a great mentor if that’s the case and actually isn’t that nice a person if that’s true.

Looks like she took some inspiration from mother RuPaul.

If rules don’t prevent that, I’m surprised it didn’t happen before in any country.

I hate these type of TV show, they humiliate the artists. I’d prefer if each artist presented original songs and we could judge their artistical skills for singing and songwriting, instead of just singing someone else’s piece. But you know, drama sells.

As a performer, you’d have to have a thick skin when you deal with negative criticism and rejection. Whether it happens on or off screen, artists will always be vulnerable to such things.

Good point. But it’s also fairer to be judge for your own work, not for impersonating someone else’s.
