Guy Sebastian Eric Saade Basim Cascada Dima Bilan

Incredibly, 2017 is almost up. And that means one thing — the return of our annual Top Tracks countdown!

As usual, the team from wiwibloggs voted for their favourite 2017 releases and recordings by and featuring Eurovision stars. Songs which competed at Eurovision or national finals were excluded (they’ve been analysed to death in our jury reviews), as were artists who have yet to compete on the Eurovision stage.

After considering well over 100 songs, we finally settled on our top 50. And now we’re ready to share it with y’all. We’ll publish five tracks daily for the next ten days.

What song will join Loreen’s “We Got The Power”Emmelie De Forest’s “Drunk Tonight”Lena’s “Traffic Lights”, and Loïc Nottet’s “Million Eyes” in our Hall of Fame?

Let the countdown commence!

50. Eric Saade “Another Week”

What we said: Following his 2016 reinvention with a more sophisticated pop sound, Eric Saade continues with the dreamy “Another Week”. He sings of the feeling of a summer love, when the days and weeks glide by. “Oops, there goes another week of my life, and I’m so glad I spent it with you”. (Robyn)

Previous top tracks: “Wide Awake” (#4 in 2016), “Colors” (#12 in 2016), “Girl From Sweden” (#8 in 2015), “Take A Ride” (#24 in 2014), “Winning Ground” (#8 in 2013)

49. Cascada “Playground”

What we said: Following the pattern of the group’s back catalogue, the song begins and ends in electro wonder — it pulsates with synths, clangs, bangs and other digi-sounds you’d struggle to name, but which reign in euro-dance territory. While it never reaches the heights of “Everytime We Touch” or the iconic “Evacuate the Dancefloor”, the tune serves its purpose and falls into the guilty pleasure category — perfect for when you’re cruising through Ibiza with the roof down and the stereo cranked up…or in this case when you’ve got your hockey sticks out and are ready to slay that little black puck. (Bernadro)

Previous top tracks: “Reason” (#43 in 2015), “Blink” (#30 in 2014), “The World Is In My Hands” (#6 in 2013)

48. Basim “Aji Aji”

What we said: He’s heavily indebted to the Latin sounds which have been dominating the world’s music markets in the wake of “Despacito”. Like his last release, Basim works both his Danish and Moroccan Arabic roots with bilingual lyrics. He seeks forgiveness and promises that he’s changed. Regardless of whether his motives are sincere or not, he’s serving up spicy hot multi-cultural rhythms. And for those alone, we’re more than happy to forgive any misdemeanours. (Padraig)

47. Guy Sebastian “High On Me”

What we said: The up-tempo track picks up where his Eurovision entry “Tonight Again” left off, with Guy singing suggestively about spending time with his suitor. There are some great production tricks at play, including a creamy synth and an addictive drum beat that add a disco feel on top of his existing soul. Guy stretches his vocal register, getting high enough to make Romania’s Cezar envious. The delicious hook is delivered with his signature pizzazz and attitude. It’s wormed itself so far into our ears that it won’t be forgotten tomorrow… making tonight so good. (Sebastian)

Previous top tracks: “Candle” (#41 in 2016), “Black & Blue” (#11 in 2015)

46. Dima Bilan “Derzhi”

What we said:  It’s vibrant, catchy and easy to dance to. But unlike so many other dance efforts from other artists, both the production and the lyrics smack of quality. This is good. Dima sends a sweet message to his loved one, letting her know he wants some contact: “Hold! Hold! Hold my hand! Tell me what you want! Get it! Hold it!” But it’s not about getting sweaty and oozing lust. This is about holding hands — an innocent sign of mutual support and tenderness. The intimacy here is real and no one else needs to know about it. (Jovana)

Previous top tracks: “V Tvoyey Golove” (#24 in 2016)

Our Top Tracks of 2017 ranking is determined by votes from a panel of wiwibloggers. They are Josh, Robyn, Jonathan, William, Mario, Edd, Mikhail, Antranig, Mike, Renske, Jovana, Sebastian, and Padraig.

Instead of people making nonsense lists about how many Swedish songs there are why not tell us which songs from Valentina Monetta are so good and amazing they need to be on the list? or has she done nothing of substance? Or Jimmie Wilson? What has he done that needs to be on here? Or Georgian Lolitaz? Or Slavko?

2017 #1 Loreen – Statements

Elle

A gosh! This Sweden thing is such a bull. Måns Z. released 4 tracks this year and just watch him have – at most 1 – represented at this list (but probably none..). You need to make videos and get your song talked about. That’s it. He didn’t care to promote them, so while they were being played a lot on Commercial radio, odds are Wiwibloggs haven’t even heard them. Nothing unfair there. (The songs were ‘Wrong decision’, ‘Can I call you home’, ‘Beautiful lie’ & ‘We can be the rulers’). Still makes him one of the top listened to… Read more »

He will make it to the list, don’t worry… He’s present since few years now. Same for Loreen and Eric Saade (he already made it to this year’s list on #50 – “Another Week”)… Waiting for Loreen and Mans :)))))) I swear I’ll take the time and search for other past participants for Eurovision and post here their releases, just to prove they’re irrelevant to wiwibloggs, while Swedish artists are omnipresent in the past 4 years, just like they were for Wiwibloggs Favorite songs from all the National finals, where was not a single song from Selectia Nationala or Albania’s… Read more »

Last time Romania was in those top 50 was back in 2013. Since then Elena Gheorghe, Paula Seling, Voltaj, Nicola, Ovidiu Anton and Cezar had some singles out. But hey, they’re not from Sweden. Any Swedish crap ends up in this annual Top, actually multiple songs from Mans, Loreen or Eric Saade, not just one in one year’s chart (see 2016). Oh well…..

Well blame Elena (dated music), Paula (boring ballads), Voltaj (irrelevant), etc. for producing bland music. Maybe if they produce music that sounds like 2016 or 2017 they’ll stand a shot next time… And my #1 goes to Sergey Lazarev + Dima Bilan this year 🙂

I could say the same about Loreen (weird and confusing new music, all those Statements are annoying and hard to digest); Mans Zelmerlow (same kind of music, all of his songs are pretty the same style); Eric Saade (same generic dance-pop radio trash kind of songs). And the cherry on top: the silly and outdated Alcazar. So you seen, we’re not interested in these names over and over again, year by year. Just because Mans and Loreen won and Eric came on 3rd spot doesn’t mean all their songs are brilliant… I want diversity, I wanna see all the countries… Read more »

I hope Growing Wings by Lara Fabian (Luxembourg 1988) is ranked highly on this list, it deserves to be. It is a beautiful song, and Lara Fabian is a brilliant singer. She might have had her heyday, but I hope this masterpiece was not overlooked by the jury.

Francesco Gabbani should be high on this list. Following on from Occidentali’s Karma, he has had three further hits in Italy showing the diverse sides of his song writing talents. He is the most played artist on Italian radio for 2017 which is some achievement! Continued success in 2018 Francesco and hopefully you’ll tour in other European countries. Love from Ireland x

Albania, Azerbaijan, San Marino, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Montenegro, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey = in all those 4 years they had 0 entries in these annual Tops 50…

Moldova, Malta, Cyprus, Macedonia, Latvia and UK had only 1 song in all those 4 years….

Talking about equality…

While Sweden had 4 + 6 + 6 + 9 = 25 entries in 4 years……………..

In 2016, on the same Top 50 Sweden had 8 entries, with Loreen, Mans and Eric Saade each of them having 2 songs…

45. Boston Bun feat. Loreen “Get Into It”
38. Robin Stjernberg “Rain”
30. Loreen “Under ytan”
22. Frans “Young Like Us”
19. Måns Zelmerlöw “Hanging On To Nothing”
12. Eric Saade “Colors”
10. Måns Zelmerlöw “Fire In The Rain”
4. Eric Saade feat. Gustav Noren “Wide Awake”

I shall check 2015, 2014 and so on to make a point?

But what is the point? That good artists get good spots? I should point out they didn’t even win the ranking, so….what…50 different countries should be ranked?! PS You are probably one of those people who moan Sweden is overrated at ESC.

The point is: former Eurovision representatives from Serbia, Romania, Poland, Albania, Cyprus, Moldova, Bulgaria had singles out, too. But they are been left out, just to see multiple pop songs from Sweden (Eric Saade, Mans and Loreen with two songs each). That is the point. Just pick one song for each of them and pick some other countries, too…. Treat all the countries fairly….

Who actually bothers to count which country has the most entries? What a huge waste of time! Do something more active, like jogging! At least jogging will serve a purpose unlike this list..
And it’s not a contest, it’s a personal opinion list!

What is with Sweden be-moaners acting like butt-hurt whiny bitches all the time and make them out to be victims of something?

And why don’t you take your time and have an IQ test? I strongly suggest you do that! There are 42+ countries, M. tried to make a point, if she or he lost time to count every damn song listed for those countries…she succeeded! We’ve all seen Sweden is favored every year, not just in 2016… In 2015, 2014 and 2013, too. And give us a break, it’s not like the songs from Sweden are masterpieces, are simply generic pop songs, most of them. If those songs were from Albania, Macedonia or Moldova they wouldn’t even make it to that… Read more »

No, the point is she tried to turn people’s opinion into a silly contest. To prove what? That people like Swedish songs? Or that she doesn’t like Swedish songs and can’t understand why other’s like them? Yeah, really good scientific point she makes..

It would have been a better point if she instead of counting countries mentioned which artist from San Marino has done something so good that it needs to be on the list? Or has Valentina done nothing of substance?

It seems reasonable to admit that Sweden are over-represented, if only because a) they are clearly at the top of the pop hit factory parade, and b) we seem to have easier access to their produce, are more familiar with the artists, and know where to find them.

Other countries may produce great stuff (as evidenced by this and other lists), but I’m sure a lot of stuff falls through the cracks un-noticed. If it wasn’t for lists like these, I would be missing out on so much more – so thanks, Wiwi!

Nina Kraljic continued to released singles, “Samo” is a great album. In Armenia, Iveta and Sirusho released Bops with capital B. Other artists whose songs I liked:
Sanna Nielsen, Ell/Eldar from Azerbaijan, Marco Mengoni, Frances Michielin, Francesco Gabbani, Debrah Scarlett, Loïc, Ott Lepland, Jamala, Highway (yes! they have good music), etc…..

The anti-Swedish sentiment is just SO ugly. It’s like in 2016 when Frans had a hit and people say, “Oh my gawd, it’s only because it’s Sweden.” No, it’s because the song is good. I hope and expect Swedish acts to do well on this list BECAUSE SWEDISH MUSIC IS AMAZING. Why don’t you complain when Sergey Lazarev and Dima Bilan get multiple nods? It’s a double standard. You complain, Sweden can continue to reign…

Let’s see who’ are the others: Loreen, Ola Salo, Boris Rene, Sanna Nielsen, Frans, Dolly Style, Robin Stjernberg, Wiktoria and JTR have all released new singles this year (I’ve been checking articles for Sweden per wiwibloggs archive in 2017 only). @Geo: Your speech is pretty tired. First, Boris Rene, Dolly Style, Wiktoria and JTR don’t qualify as they haven’t made it to Eurovision (please read the top of their article). Second, given that Sweden is the world’s third biggest exporter of pop, it deserves to dominate a European Eurovision list. DEAL WITH IT.

Yes, Sweden is over-represented, but leave them alone. Critics will only victimize them. Think about that and be wise.
