Another day, another big artist expressing an interest in competing in Vidbir 2018 — Ukraine’s national selection for Eurovision. Today it’s the turn of Ukrainian superstar Alekseev, who has said he wants to “compete for victory” at Eurovision.

Alekseev is a big deal — and not only in his native Ukraine. He spent a small portion of his childhood in neighbouring Russia and recently won “Best Male Singer” at the third edition of the annual Russian National Music Awards. He beat out several big Russian stars, including Eurovision alums Sergey Lazarev, Dima Bilan and Philipp Kirkorov.

That Alekseev has been revealed as a potential Eurovision participant comes as no surprise to many of his fans and followers. His videos frequently tell stories through impressive visuals. Seeing is believing, so watch his performance of “Chuvstvuyu dushoy” from Ukraine’s M1 Music Awards below. Camera tricks, cranes, monochrome magic — the technical skill on show could eventually make the Dream Team jealous. It’s already left many of Alekseev’s colleagues gasping.

Writing on Instagram on Monday afternoon, Alekseev said Eurovision questions have been coming thick and fast for a while. But only now has he felt ready to throw himself fully into a potential run.

“There was no interview in which I would not be asked why I was not going to Eurovision. I always joked about this topic, but now our team felt the strength to compete for the victory in this contest. We are accustomed each time to set new goals and achieve them.”

Alekseev’s musical career started with his participation in The Voice of Ukraine in 2014, where Eurovision 2008 runner-up Ani Lorak helped him with those early and very important first steps of his career.

His big breakthrough came with the 2015 release of his single “Pyanoe solntse”. The song describes an emotional break-up and came with a music video in which Alekseev kills his alter ego. The song stayed on the Russian iTunes charts for several weeks and topped both Ukrainian and Russian charts.

Both of his hits “Pyanoe solntse” and “Chuvstvuyu dushoy” were written by music producer Ruslan Kvinta, who will be the producer of next year’s Ukrainian selection. His most recent single is “Navsegda”, released in November.

If Alekseev competes in Ukraine’s national selection, he will have to overcome fan favourite and Vidbir veteran Tayanna, who also confirmed interest in participating recently.

He might be huge in Russia/Ukraine, but he stays unknown in the rest of Europe. And that’s why he needs the right song, if he wins the selection with a crap entry he won’t go far. At least we know Tayanna ain’t no competition, her songs are all very meh.

He may not be a great singer but the color of his voice is very unique.
I loved his first single, after that he is repeating himself but lets listen to the song first and hope for something different.
He is definitely the big favorite to win the national selection.

Even if he’s perfect and has a great song for Eurovision, am sure that Jamala will still find a way of voting for someone else in the national final. 😉

Alekseev has an interesting nasal voice with some vibrato; it reminds me of some early folk recordings. I can hear why he has been getting those National Music Awards – his voice is certainly very musical.
But… Does he have any “charisma”? I’m not sure yet. He’s certainly an exciting contender though. 🙂
