Helena Paparizou Laura Tesoro Loreen Robin Bengtsson Stella Mwangi

Incredibly, 2017 is almost up. And that means one thing — the return of our annual Top Tracks countdown!

As usual, the team from wiwibloggs voted for their favourite 2017 releases and recordings by and featuring Eurovision stars. Songs which competed at Eurovision or national finals were excluded (they’ve been analysed to death in our jury reviews), as were artists who have yet to compete on the Eurovision stage.

After considering well over 100 songs, we finally settled on our top 50. And now we’re ready to share it with y’all. We’ll publish five tracks daily until we reach our number one.

What song will join Loreen’s “We Got The Power”Emmelie De Forest’s “Drunk Tonight”Lena’s “Traffic Lights”, and Loïc Nottet’s “Million Eyes” in our Hall of Fame?

The countdown continues!

35. Helena Paparizou “Haide”

What we said: Loosely translating as “Go”, the track radiates Mediterranean heat. Replete with traditional instruments, ethno-beats and lush harmonies, we’re instantly transported to the blue waters and white sands of the Greek seaside. Forget about the so-so “Fiesta”, this takes us right back to the hits of Helena’s heyday ten years ago. It’s so 2005 without being two thousand and late. (Padraig)

Previous top tracks: “Don’t Hold Back On Love” (#16 in 2014)

34. Stella Mwangi “Work”

What we said: Stella offers up what’s easily her most mainstream effort since “Haba Haba”. Yet it’s also completely different. Whereas her Eurovision 2011 entry was all niceness and twee – remember, it was dedicated to her granny – “Work” remains authentic to her grittier post-Düsseldorf material. But unlike, say, “Identify Yourself” or “Chuku Hatua”, this is chart-ready. Mwangi spits out lyrics with the ferocity of an on-form Nicki Minaj. And her utterances are ridiculously addictive. (Padraig)

33. Laura Tesoro “Beast”

What we said: Fear not, Laura’s still her vivacious self, and is only a beast in the best possible way. “Watch out I’m your beast” she sings, “there’s no stopping me / put the freak on me”. The sound is cooler than her last two singles, less pop more street. The music video sees Laura put her words into action. We see her hard at work at concerts and in the sports hall. There really is no stopping her. (Padraig)

32. Robin Bengtsson “Dark Angel”

What we said:  “Dark Angel” is a moody pop song about the temptation of lust in the face of love. He sings with dark biblical undertones, calling his lover his ‘dark angel and the devil on his shoulder’. Robin’s Timberlake-esque tones shine brightly through the darkness, harmonising beautifully with the synthesised arrangement. (Sebastian)

31. Loreen “Hate The Way I Love You”

What we said: At over six and half minutes, it’s her longest song yet. However, all that time is spent delivering a whirlwind of emotions and beautifully rich instrumentation. Next to the defiance of “Statements” and “’71 Charger”, “Hate the Way I Love You”, while still very dark, is much more intimate and sensitive. In front of a fast-paced drum beat and sumptuous violin strings, Loreen sings about an abusive relationship she can’t leave. Her high notes really hit home in the chorus. It’s definitely a long way from the everlasting joy of the dance-based “Euphoria”.  (Natalie)

Previous top tracks: “Ride” (#43 in 2017), “Under Ytan” (#30 in 2016), “Get Into It” (#45 in 2016), “Paper Light (Higher)” (#3 in 2015), “I’m In It With You” (#6 in 2015), “We Got The Power” (#1 in 2013)

Our Top Tracks of 2017 ranking is determined by votes from a panel of wiwibloggers. They are Josh, Robyn, Jonathan, William, Mario, Edd, Mikhail, Antranig, Mike, Renske, Jovana, Sebastian, and Padraig.
