Edgars Kreilis supernova 2018 1

It’s our fourth day on the Latvia Wiwi Jury, as our team of music un-professionals looks at the acts of Supernova 2018. And whilst we enjoyed some traditional Latvian maizes zupa (that’s a dessert of bread soup!), we also took the time to listen to Edgars Kreilis with his entry, “Younger Days”.

Edgars will be a familiar face to those watching Supernova 2017, where he placed 8th in the first heat with “We Are Angels”. Since then, he finished 6th in the first season on X Faktors in Latvia.

Edgars Kreilis — “Younger Days”

“Youngers Days” Reviews

Bernardo: “Younger Days” is a decent pop production. Not overly produced and it allows Edgars smooth voice to shine. Like all pop productions, this will be heavily influenced by the stating. It can either elevate the song or destroy it’s chances. It brings nothing new to the table, but in a rather weak selection, it’s a standout.

Score: 7/10

Antranig: “Younger Days” sounds very current and could do very well at Eurovision. Some of the lyrics are very clumsy and they would need to be tidied up if this took to the stage in Lisbon. I also believe this needs a more powerful final chorus to really hammer it home. Ultimately, this is far from perfect and not my personal favourite, but has all the ingredients to be Latvia’s best choice.

Score: 8/10

Luis: There are many generic pop tracks in this year’s Supernova field, and “Younger Days” is another one. However, Edgars has got some things right. You know where this is going from the first moment and the beat is distinctive. The lyrics aren’t bad and he’s not trying to add unnecessary flourishes. The chorus may be repetitive, but at least it’s effective.

Score: 7/10

Edgars Kreilis supernova 2018 2Chris: Last year, Edgars’ entry “We Are Angels” had an alright beat with some poorly-worded lyrics. This year, “Younger Days” has a much stronger tune, but the lyrics have taken an even sharper nosedive. The chorus is just a mishmash of nonsensical phrases. If Edgars had taken a little more care, this could have been a contender.

Score: 5.5/10

Edgars: Edgars made the right choice by participating in X Factor. It’s given him some boost of confidence and therefore, he returns to Supernova as one of the favourites to win this competition. But that will only work in Latvia. In Lisbon, this would get some votes from neighbours and stay in the semis.

Score: 6/10

Robyn: There’s a lot to like about “Younger Days”. It has a modern electropop sound, Edgars’ voice is smooth and expressive and there’s a good sense of storytelling in the verses. The biggest weakness is the jury-unfriendly chorus format — just “younger days” repeated over and over. But Edgars seems like a compelling performer and could bring more in the live show.

Score: 7.5/10

Natalie: You can assume what Edgars tried to do here is to go with the tropical summery dance vibe that it’s in right now. At the same time, he wanted to write a dreamy pop song about running away with his sister. It’s a really sweet idea. But it’s not catchy or energetic, and the lyrics are way too weird to get into. It really misses the mark. The electronic riff also just comes off as grating and annoying.

Score: 3/10

It’s a well done typical song, but it’s still a typical song. 6/10

The song is quite good and easy to listen to, however, knowing that Edgars can’t deliver a good performance, I’m 95% positive he will stay in the semi finals

Really overrated. The instrumental may be good, but the lyrics completely screw it over. They’re just grammatically incorrect in every imaginable way. The music video is confusing as hell too, all the talk of ‘me and my sister’ but it’s fast cars and ass grabbing?

Fresh pop song that follows the current “tropical vibe” trend. It doesn’t bring something new, but it’s positive and make me move. It’s nothing special, but stands out in this weak line-up. Will be important that Edgar displays the energy and positiveness on stage, but overall this is one of the obvious finalists.

7/10. My 3rd in Supernova 2018.

Beautiful song. I like the melody and the message. It’s fresh and modern. However, I think it needs a good visual presentation, if it wins.

Off topic, Nrk just released the songs for the Norwegian national final. All aboard indeed, Alexander rybak, Alexander wahlmann and stella are all there and all 10 songs are pretty strong. No wonder Norway is doing well in betting odds.

Good song but there are better choices for Latvia. When it comes to the lyrics, the idea was good but the execution bad. There are several grammar mistakes.

With a vocal effect one setting away from “chipmunk”, some poor English lyrics and a video that doesn’t appear to entirely match the meaning of the lyrics, you might expect me to trash this entry. However, there is some good harmonic progression when the chorus repeats “younger days” a lot – the balance between hooks and harmony is quite good. The whole of the product is more than its individual parts. An accidental gem. 6.5/10

I have to agree- the lyrics need some serious work- the original lyrics from “Tick Tock” were worked on in their favour. For Now, Running Red Lights is the best one for me, so far.

Great music, but the lyrics’ grammar is too horrible to overlook. Such a shame, as this otherwise would’ve been a very strong entry.

One of my favourites in Latvia. Good-looking performer with a great voice and when you throw in a radio-friendly, current song, you tick a lot of boxes that Latvian entries normally miss. At Eurovision, I see it as a high-floor, low-ceiling, Justs-type entry.
