miriana conte mesc 2018

Rocket to the stars? Not quite – this is a Maltese “Rocket”, y’all. The Wiwi Jury continues to review the songs for Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2018, and this time it’s the turn of Miriana Conte.

Miriana is the youngest of this year’s MESC contestants at just 16 years old. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t have experience though. She participated in MESC 2017, and has also competed in contests such as San Remo Junior.

Miriana Conte — “Rocket”

“Rocket” Reviews:

Chris: It feels like there was simply too much effort put in to the production of “Rocket”, and too little in content. The chorus desperately needs something else to happen — right now, it feels like only a token effort otherwise. An attempt to be modern gone wrong.

Score: 5/10

Deban: This “Rocket” has no fuel. It’s intro gives a glimpse of modern production, but don’t be fooled: it’s hook is riding on cliches. Miranda Conte may be Malta’s youngest contestant, but I have heard better JESC entries.

Score: 3.5/10

Natalie: If you like crazy metaphors in lyrics, there are some really nice rocket metaphors in this song. Miriana has a great soulful voice, but it’s seriously wasted here. The song might be good to make you smile, but there’s some great competition in this national final, and this just comes across as silly and half-baked. It falls flat – it just doesn’t catch the imagination or make you wanna dance like some other songs do.

Score: 3/10

Jonathan: There’s a moment of excitement during the first verse that we are onto a banger. But the chorus is a bit of a let-down and plods along a bit. “Rocket” is still certainly not a bad effort, and it gets my feet tapping. Yet, while Miriana sings about flying to the moon, they missed the opportunity to head to the sun and beyond.

Score: 7/10

William: Miriana has a killer voice, and plenty of sass and power to boot. Her voices cuts through all the production and digital flourishes (of which there are many). And while I think she’s great, the song grows a tad repetitive — not even her relentless shouting at the end is enough to save it.

Score: 5.5/10

Robyn: “Rocket” is one of the strongest songs in MESC 2018, and Miriana delivers a great performance, full of attitude. It’s one of the most contemporary songs and delivers some of the tropical house song that’s been everywhere. There is potential for a bold performance at the grand final. The one big concern: it sounds like the studio production of “Rocket” is a little dependant on Autotune — let’s hope this is an artistic choice and not done to hide pitchy vocals that can’t be delivered live.

Score: 7.5/10

In our Malta Wiwi Jury, we have 17 jurors but only room for 6 reviews. The rest of our scores can be found below:

I am not hearing that great voice that everyone is going on about. The lyrics and production do sound as if not a lot of effort has gone into them. It feels like a lazy song that is grateful to be there rather than one with any intention of doing well.

Honestly since I last listened to the Maltese songs this is only one I remember and I find myself singing to it randomly.

None of the Maltese songs have much going for them but if she can deliver live this should be Malta’s choice, the others just either forgettable, disasters or are too gimmicky

This song’s production is awful. It lacks drums, and her voice isn’t valued.

I think this song is better than most people think it is. It’s very catchy and it could really look good with a great performance. 7.5/10

It’s up-beat, you want to dance to it and she’s got a good voice.
For me it’s generic and cheesy, though. I don’t like the lyrics.

I like her enthusiasm and the rhytm kind of works at the chorus, but I just can’t get over these stupid lyrics. If they were only generic, that would be fine, but they are confusing and nonsensical. Verses state multiple times how she wants that guy to stay away from her, but the chorus is explicitly stating how she is into him. The innuendos are so cheap as well. I am sorry, but I just can’t.

Oh!! In my opinion she should hop on her rocket ship and fly to the stars cause probably that’s where she should go to hide from the shameful lyrics . this is just bland and nothing bad musically but not good either.

I mean… Almost every song from Malta this year is boring and bad, so why should this one be an exception? Well meant 3.25/10 sorry.

I agree with… Robyn! 🙂 This is actually a great song that musically progresses quite well into a chorus with a catchy melody. The song reminds me of early jazz rather than modern tropical house, but I like it. Miriana has a great voice, and she would do well to get this right live. Oh, and this song has a middling “Coda D.S. al Fine”! Bonus point for that! About the lyrics, yes they are a bit silly, but I think it’s refreshing to have a song that’s about independence of spirit for a change. The only big negative is… Read more »
