During last night’s OT gala, Ana beat Agoney with 50.3% of the votes, thereby becoming the last contestant to win the ticket for the Eurovision gala as a solo artist.

And today Operacion Triunfo producers kept the train rolling by sharing snippets of the nine songs competing to represent Spain at Eurovision 2018. The songwriters behind the tracks have entered the academy to start rehearsals with the triunfitos and you can now enjoy a first taste of each tune.

There will be a total of nine potential Eurovision entries in next week’s Eurovision gala. Aitana, Alfred, Amaia, Miriam and Ana will each perform a solo number, and Miriam and Agoney, Amaia and Alfred, Aitana and Ana Guerra will pair up to perform three duets. The five finalists will also perform a five-piece version of “Camina” — the OT 2017 anthem.

Soloists

AMAIA – “AL CANTAR (When singing)”

Serving pure emotion and beautiful lyrics, Amaia will be singing Rozalen’s “Al Cantar” with the hope of representing Spain. The song comes with plenty of old-school vibes and sweetness, and seems to result in a fragile and purely crafted song. No doubt Amaia will be able to take the track higher than the demo artist does.

AITANA – “ARDE” (It Burns)

It’s a surprise for Aitana! Fans expected the powers-that-be to assign the youngest contestant an upbeat song, but they’ve done the complete opposite. Emotion and tenderness come through in this meaningful song crafted by Alba Reig — a former member of the urban Spanish band “Sweet California”.  Alba described her song as very intimate and focused on the equality between races.

ANA GUERRA – “EL REMEDIO” (The Remedy)

Colombia and Canarias merge in Nabález’s song “El Remedio”. The author comes from the South American country, and wrote using the fire within. It’s a Latin fiesta with hot southern vibes — the only solo song with those feels in this contest.

Speaking in a special RTVE stream called #OTVisión, musical experts described the song as a little outdated and not that different from what is trending in the charts now. Others argued that this could hit the charts anyway. Where do you stand?

MIRIAM – “LEJOS DE TU PIEL” (Away From Your Skin)

Miriam has been crowned “La Leona (The Lioness)” and she deserves a big song. She’s got it. “Lejos de tu piel” is a composition by Steve Robson and translated by Diego Cantero. Steve boasts a Grammy nod for his Rascal Flatts song “What Hurts The Most” — so Miriam is in good hands. Is this a #EuroDiva hit for Miriam?

ALFRED – “QUE NOS SIGAN LAS LUCES” (The Lights Continue)

Alfred has pounded the alarm with his song assignment — it already seems to be one of the most supported of the solo acts. Composed by Nil Moliner, “Que Nos Sigan las Luces” is pure indie fun. The chorus is strong and the snippet sounds Eurovision-friendly.

DUETS

AMAIA & ALFRED  – “TU CANCIÓN” (Your Song)

We all dreamed about it, and if you can dream it, you can make it happen. And Almaia has now happened.

Alfred and Amaia have, as predicted, been given a touching piano song. Thankfully this snippet avoids clichés and sounds very promising.

It comes from Raúl Gómez — a young and talented singer and composer who participated in the Spanish musical talent show “El Número Uno”.

Ana Guerra & Aitana – “Chico Malo” (Bad Boy)

Knock knock on the club door: Aitana and Ana Guerra are ready to hit the floor with a seriously hot beat.

Morgan and Simms crafted the song, but Brisa Fenoy adapted it. The whole project is very baila la la la, and don’t stop mueve tu cabeza! “Chico Malo” is probably the most Latin option for Spain. It could be a good move. Fun and excitement are very much appreciated in a 43-song contest. Just ask Moldova’s SunStroke Project.

Miriam & Agoney – “Magia” (Magic)

Last but not least, Miriam and Agoney will join forces to represent Spain with a song from David Otero, Funambulista and Tato Latorre. It’s the only song in which we will see the Canarian full-of-enthusiasm-about-Eurovision Agoney. Is this song as magical as she is?

Group performance

RTVE has confirmed what so many of you wanted: The group performance will be “Camina (Walk)” — the song that the 16 OT artists composed themselves. It’s not just their song, but also the show’s anthem — the OT 2017 hymn.

The song was originally composed and crafted so that each of the 16 candidates had a moment — and a voice. Unfortunately those 16 candidates are now just 5! And Agoney won’t be allowed to join them.

It is now necessary to revamp the song for the 5-person group and to fit within three minutes. The song currently lasts a little over four minutes. But Manu Guix — the Academy’s musical director — has already confirmed they can manage. The song will not only fit within the three minutes: it will also have more of a festival feel.

While some Spanish fans thinks “Camina” should be avoided — all 16 candidates should be there — others are waiting for the revamp result. But it is a fact that “Camina” is not the most supported song among fans.

Reactions

Both the finalists and the Academy teachers ended up in tears. Emotion and music filled today’s very special “Reaparto de temas (song-assignment).”

Both Noemí Galera and Manu Guix agreed with this statement: “the music has returned thanks to Salvador Sobral”. And they believe the songs competing to represent Spain in Lisbon follow his authentic, independent vibe.

In any case, these are just snippets. You will need to keep watching the addictive 24-h OT 2017 Channel to find out if the full songs are as promising as the snippets. You will be able to listen to all 9 songs in their entirety on Thursday — after their first rehearsal. The second rehearsal will take place on Saturday. Producers will allow songwriters to modify the songs, so things can and likely will change before the gala.

What do you think about this first taste of the Spanish songs? Are you saying yay or nay? And which one is your favourite? Tell us in the comments section below!

I´d only vote for `chico malo´ cause It´s such a catchy song and it´s good. I mean I know spanish people love Amaia and Alfred but sorry… They have a really boring song and I absolutely would not vote for them. Chico malo is the best option. It´s my top 2 Eurovision song by far

If you NEED a latin song in ESC maybe you can ask your own country to send it. We do have other kinds of music, not to say that those songs are more South-american than Spanish, “El remedio”s author is from Colombia himself.

Please, SEND ANA WAR TO EUROVISION SONG CONTEST. Spain must send something new and surprising this time, no more of the same. A Latin rhythmic song is something really new and that can make the difference. This song is a real Latin one. To this is added the art and expressiveness of Ana Guerra, proved throughout her performances during the “Operación Triunfo” contest, that was recognised by the public, professors and the jury. I think that Ana Guerra, playing “El Remedio”, with a lot of rhythm and accompaniment and with a good staging that accompanies her, would leave Spain in… Read more »

These are all quality songs, none of them are actually bad, they’re just incredibly bland and boring. As a spanish speaker, you can tell they payed a lot of attention to the lyrics, since they’re all quite thoughtful if not beautiful, but the composition of the music isn’t really on the same level.
Almaia’s duet, Chico Malo or Alfred’s solo song are the best options for Spain, but whatever they choose it’s gonna be in serious need of a revamp.

From the solos I like: Ana War and Alfred’s song. Although I don’t think that Alfred can pull off that kind of song, it doesn’t seem like his thing.

From the duets: Alfred and Amaia and Ana War and Aitana. They should probably send one of these.

It is confirmed that wiwiblogs comment sections are full of deaf people with no taste at all, something that was already obvious but now more than ever. This is by far the best Spanish preselection in decades, there are at least 5 songs that would way good options, Al Cantar is beautiful as f*ck and quite timeless, Que nos sigan las luces has a brilliant chorus and it brings something different and something that could do great on the radio, Tu Canción is sweet and easy to remember, it will be magic in live since those 2 have a great… Read more »

There’s just some weird balladphobia among eurovision fans, I don’t understand why. I absolutely love “Al Cantar” and “Tu Canción”. Of course, the the final version could be a little different, but still I am sure Spain can do really well with any of these two song. Don’t pay much attention to all these negative comments, they are the ones who hated “Amar pelos dois” as well, but look what happened at the end. 🙂

Martin, you might not be deaf at all, just have a particular TASTE. As a matter of fact, this year Eurovision and specially our preselection “Operación Triunfo” have become quite big and among the authors of the songs there are quite well-known and successful composers and singers, something that just a year ago would be IMPOSSIBLE.

Maybe it’s just you prefer traditional stuff made by Tony Sanchez Olsson, Thomas G:sson and so on and so forth, but, as I was telling you, that’s just a matter of taste

MIRAI , I see you don’t really remember. Salvador was valued since the beginning by all eurofans, always high on the odds. It was a novelty act, something that we had never seen before, and he had two uptempo songs before and after he performed his own song, which helped. You can also see how the other ballads scored badly, so i dont see your point. I really find laughable when people bring salvador to justify their arguments. He was unique and stood out amongst the others, so dont compare him to the “copies” you’re trying to send, Please.

As someone from Spain i’d like to ask a question to my fellow europeans out there!
We have a couple songs with latino rythms in the pre selection, and they seem to be the most liked among the people from other european countries.
I always thought that bringing latino and flamencoish songs to the contest wasn’t a smart move, because people expect Spain to send exactly that kind of songs. It’s staying in the comfort zone with no suprise factor, basically.
But I don’t really know what to think now. What are your opinions on it?

Tracking what has done well in chart in the previous year and copy it may be a good way to achieve good positions in the eurovision, but I’m personally sick of it. Thank God, odds are changing and countries like Portugal, France, Italy, Belgium, Bulgaria and many others are bringing the dignity Björkman has stripped off eurovision once again.

2. Ana & Aitana’s duet
3. Alfred’s solo song
The rest I don’t like and I couldn’t care less about. No more balads, please. Just no.

I totally understand people dont like Alfred&Amaia’s song just at first hearing but just wait for watching it live and see the magic of both together (and Amaia’s voice) and you will have a WINNER ALERT.

Not a winner alert… Sorry. Eso perdona, pero NO… No tiene la magía ni el factor sorpresa… Deseo a los dos toda la buena suerte del mundo. Olvidar las pesadillas de los ultimos años… Eso seguro.

I wonder what miserable little lives some people that comment here must have. Seriously, must you be rude, disrespectful and rude when expressing your opinions. Ugh, this is why many singers and artists don’t want to participate in Eurovision. Haters, trolls, so much negativity! This is a song contest that should bring joy of discovering new music and artists. Well, now that I got that off my chest, let’s comment on the snippets. I think this a step in the right direction, while it’s not amazing, it is much better than in previous years. Looking forward to next Monday’s gala… Read more »

Couldn’t agree more on your view about the rude and/or whiny comments. But it seems that’s the way Internet works now, people need the drama and the negativity.

I was going to post something about all the hate here, but you have summed up all my feelings. Thanks. ?

It isn’t an amazing NF, but all the songs has personality and the lyrics are really beautiful in almost all of them. I think I’m going to like them even more when the studio versions come out. I don’t really care if we get a bottom.

It seems people need unnecessary drama and hate here. There’s the same hate against Spain every year. The result of having sad and empty lifes.

What’s unnecessary is the lack of acceptance of different opinions that dont agree with you. People are allowed to express their discontentment or negative opinion and criticism, it has nothing to do with drama or empty lives. It says more about you than them, because you cant accept that some people might not have the same thoughts as you do about this NF.

aM what is unnecessary is the rudeness and the hate while expressing discontentment and criticism. And yes, it is a true reflection on their lives or lack of it. What is wrong with saying: Spain doesn’t get it, or sorry not my cup of tea, etc. Do you realize that these are composers, songwriters and artists that created these songs. What, everyone here that are being rude can do it better? Let me tell you this, I honestly have no skin in this game as I’m not from Spain. I do accept other people’s opinions but I will never accept… Read more »

Well i was talking to him not you, so it’s kinda pointless, but i’ll reply anyway. I don’t think it’s a reflection on their lives or lack of it, you and i don’t know what their lives are like, in fact that’s unnecessary and those sorts of accusations kind of show you’re not any better than them. I do realise they are composers, i also realise some contestants are not happy with some songs (Aitana, Ana guerra, Agoney…) so some comments here have a point, actually. I’m pretty sure those rude people know they can’t do better, that’s why they… Read more »

aM, the reason why I replied was because of the responses to this mini thread created by my initial post. I’m not any better or worst than anyone here and no need to explain to me how the internet because I know that already. I will spend my time as I wish and I will call out people who are being rude and disrespectful, being quiet and staying on the sidelines will make me complicit in the horrible bashing and bullying on the internet. Look at what happened to Salvador Sobral, the poor guy had a severe heart condition that… Read more »

The same way as people are giving positive remarks about them, but people can always have an idea. Before i heard the full french songs, i heard the snippets and it wasn’t any different.

There isn’t a club banger, a hit or a winner alert, but I’m really pleased with the quality showed in this line-up. All of the entries are pretty decent at worst. As a Spanish, I’ll be happy and proud with any of them representing Spain. I’m looking forward to this Thursday to listen to all of them in full with their voices and personal touch. I’m also very happy because the songs are composed specifically for each one of them. This is my top 9 and my thoughts based on the demos and their potential: 1. Almaia – “Tu Canción”… Read more »

Hector’s comment is contradicting itself. It’s just pure prejudice and hipster mindset. To say Ana’s song doesnt bring anything new to the contest and to rate that Almaia, disney, cliche song 9 is a joke. Latin songs are rarely showed in the contest, and they’re super trendy now, so it would certainly bring something new, i dont even remember the last time Spain sent one. All those ballads are sooo trying to recreate what Salvador did. It’s actually predictable and pitiful, special since Luisa and Sal had that ‘special’ duet moment last year. My message to Spain: Stop copying and… Read more »

Could you please tell me why my comment is “pure prejudice and hipster mindset”? “El Remedio” doesn’t bring anything new. That’s a fact. There are like hundreds of songs out similar to it. In fact, you have 4 or 5 more in other NFs. In Spain, this have been trendy since almost 5 years, it’s nothing new for us. Spain is more than latin sounds, siesta and fiesta and has much more to offer. It’s not a bad choice, but there are better options in the line-up, even if you think all of them are trying to recreate what Salvador… Read more »

El remedio brings something new to the contest, whether you like it or not. Cuban vibes and Colombian composer if im not mistaken. Comparing it with other Nfs, when Latin america is a big place with different cultures, but okay. You’re being extremely biased. You have way more ballads similar to yours in other NFs, so? Have you seen Iceland? What Spain has offered for the past few years was ballads and pop songs similar to other countries. That guy last year was trying to be a californian surfer guy, which i dont associate with Spain at all. Spain is… Read more »

And yes i know Luisa and Salvador were on Idols, but their close relationship wasnt fabricated. She wrote a song for him, it was special and a sweet moment. We’ve had love couples with nice chemistry on ESC for years too, that’s not new. If you can’t accept the facts and arguments i gave you, then, all the best to you and your choices.

The best one: Almaia.

The only ones that are really standing out to me are the first two duets. I think nearly all of the solo songs should just be scrapped (Aitana’s isn’t that bad actually), but there’s definitely something good in both Tu cancion and Chico malo, although it’s hard to tell which would be better from just these demos.

All of them sound really awful, quite irritating actually! Spain’s national selection this year is a total mess, I mean…what’s wrong with some countries? And why so many ballads? Where’s the variety in genres?
