Cyprus: Eleni Foureira reportedly close to accepting RIK’s Eurovision 2018 offer

She’s the Greek star who has long had her sites set on Eurovision. Now it seems Eleni Foureira is close to inking a deal with Cyprus broadcaster RIK. Local media reports she’s informally agreed to be Cyprus’ act for Lisbon but nothing is definite yet.

Foureira is the latest name to emerge after RIK reportedly cancelled their planned national final in favour of internally selecting an artist for Eurovision 2018.

Last week, Eurovision 2005 winner Helena Paparizou was reportedly in talks with Cyprus for a Eurovision comeback. While she was said to have liked the song, she wasn’t ready to do Eurovision again.

After that, the broadcaster was reportedly in talks with both Elenia Foureira and Tamta. Now it appears that Foureira is close accepting RIK’s offer.

If she does agree to the gig, Foureira will perform a song written by Greek-Swedish hitmaker Alex P. He was brought on board by RIK back in September, and has remained the one confirmed and constant part of Cyprus’ Eurovision 2018 selection.

If Foureira does agree to Eurovision 2018, it will be the realisation of a long-held dream. Foureira almost made it to Eurovision in 2010, when she competed in the 2010 Greek national final with “Kivotos tou Noe”. While she missed out by coming in second place, that did not kill her Eurovision desire.

In 2013 Fouriera made another appearance at the Greek national final — but this time as the interval act. She joined Ukraine’s first Eurovision winner Ruslana for an attitude-packed cover of “Wild Dances”.

Then two years later she had a hit with a Greek version of Nadav Guedj’s “Golden Boy”. Foureira has made no secret of her dream to go to Eurovision. Last year she spoke of her sadness at not being selected to represent Greece in Kyiv.

But now it appears there may be a chance that her dream may come true — only singing for Cyprus.
