Mikolas Josef Lie to Me Czech Republic

This ain’t no lie! The Czech Republic has found their act for Eurovision 2018. After winning the jury vote last week, it seemed likely that Mikolas Josef was on his way to victory.

Tonight, in a low-key announcement on the Czech news, the final result was revealed. Mikolas Josef will go to Lisbon with “Lie to Me”!

Mikolas’ victory is perhaps not too surprising. Not only did he top the international jury vote, but he also handily won with our Wiwi Jury.

He also crushed the competition in our Eurovision Song CZ poll. He received nearly 53% of the total vote, with 1,379 of you voting for him.

In our interview with Mikolas, he says that “Lie to Me” is “about hard times that you’re going through and not getting swallowed by the negativity”. He also says that some of the suggestive lyrics can be interpreted “any way you want”.

Mikolas Josef — “Lie to Me” interview

Mikolas has been on the radar for the Czech Republic for some time now. He was in talks to represent the country last year, but turned the offer down after being told he would have to sing “My Turn” (later performed by Martina Barta).

He explained to us why he rejected the song: “I didn’t really connect with the song. When they contacted me and asked me to put some vocals on the song I said, ‘I don’t think I would be comfortable with this because it’s not really a reflection of myself.’” That’s some artistic integrity, y’all!

As revealed earlier today, Mikolas will sing “Lie to Me” in the first half of the first semi-final, on May 8.

What do you think of “Lie to Me”? Do you think that Mikolas can bring the Czech Republic to the final for only the second time? Let us know all your thoughts in the comments section below!

This is just cute. I wonder why people are saying this is a modern song? This sound is so dated already, compared to what current Western & US charts songs sound like. It doesn’t mean that if it’s not a ballad, it’s modern. Uptempo does not equal to modern. A televote pandering song, wonder of Czechia swung too much for this at the expense of jury votes. Hey Mamma already did this last year, time for a new sound

It’s catchy but nothing special, it’s like a mix of Talk Dirty and Strip That Down…

He is like a Czech mix of Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke. Song is pretty good but copies U.S. music heavily. Where is any Czech or European culture exhibited?

Loreen and Mans won and their songs had no Swedish tone, both were pop based song. Emmelie de forest won and that had like a flute but other than that no danish feel. Conchita won and her song was more like a James Bond feel which is very Hollywood rather than Austrian feel. Portugal won with jazz which originated from America. Only Ukraine won with a culture based song in the past years. Also American music appears in most countries music charts one way or another. You can’t knock this song for being American heavy when winners and top songs… Read more »

Bad choice, it has a dated sound and no matter how “televoting friendly” it seems it’s going to get far less than anyone expects.

The international juries at Eurovision are also going to be a lot older than the national final jury and will just kill it dead. I expect it to come around 12th in it’s semi

Great guilty pleasure. I’d love for it to do well, but I will TOTALLY understand if the juries kill it.

I mean France is so poignant with refugees and this is so gloriously trashy- I love how both are great in their different ways!

I rather love the music and the beat, but I’m embarrassed to sing some of the lyrics. For sure, they’ll have to rewrite some of the lines for coarse language, like Robin Bengtsson had to do last year.

Very fresh and a out of the box entry. Im sure they will qualify with this 🙂 Could be a potential winner actually if they know how to stage this. Very curious to find out with what they come up with. Good luck!

First time I heard it I found it annoying but after the second listen, I was hooked With some really cool, slick staging this could do very well in the final

Stephanie

Reading the lyrics on 4lyrics.eu, some of them would have to be changed as foul language in contest entries is against EBU rules (he mentions “motherf***ers” for example)

Great intro, draws you in! Up-beat, fun, modern sound. This song was actually my favourite among the 6. So, I’m happy for Mikolas! If the staging is good and the live performance too, this will be an excellent entry!
Good luck to Czech Republic!

Slick, fun, and well-produced. Major props to Mikolas for going DIY (wrote, sung, AND produced, rather than relying on a studio to do it for him) and still turning out a great song. I love it, and hope it earns the Czech Republic a second spot in the final. And even if it doesn’t, it’s just a blast.

I don’t like the song, too sleazy for me, but I don’t detest it either.
Now, why did they even bother doing a NS if they’re not going to brodcast it or even allow people to hear the acts sing live? Might as well just have internally selected Mikolas.

When I first heard this song I wasn’t impressed but now, I kinda enjoy it. And I think this will do well in Eurovision because a) it will stand out unlike those annoying ballads b) he can sing live c) some say this is dated – even if that is true, not as dated as possible others d) countries like Norway, Estonia and Iceland which usually send good entries have very weak songs this year. Whatever they choose in national selection are far worse.

It’s far from being original, but “Lie to Me” is a fun well produced song and the only option that seemed to be memorable enough for the televoting. The question here is if Mikolas can deliver it on a live show. If he can, Czechia will probably qualify. It’s very weird to have a national final where nobody performs the song to a live audience.

Sis America hasn’t had hits with this sound since 2015, this song would get deemed as dated and radios wouldn’t play it.

Unless Iceland selects ‘Gold Digger’. That might also be a good opening…
