The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to listen to and rank the 20 songs competing in Eesti Laul 2018. Next is Rolf Roosalu with “Show a Little Love”. Were we feeling the love? Read on to find out!

Rolf Roosalu – “Show a Little Love”

“Show a Little Love” reviews

Robyn: There’s a strong flavour of Robbie Williams in the late ’90s, when he embraced disco. Yeah, Rolf isn’t the best singer and this isn’t the greatest song, but there’s something really endearing about this unashamed, uplifting disco number. As a Eurovision entry, Estonia can do better. As a dancefloor number, sure!

Score: 6.5/10

Barnabas: This really disappointed me, a song about partying which is technically a cheap remake of Uptown Funk? No thanks.

Score: 2.5/10

Deban: Dated cruise-ship disco padded with nonsensical lyrics. Rolf Roosalu, a musical theatre star, gets lost in the chorus of a song that I’d consider to be lame at best. Producers must’ve been struggling for content when they agreed to shortlist this!

Score: 2/10

Antranig: “Are you really sad tonight” might be the most depressing opening lyrics to a song since “When strangers are coming, they come to your house, they kill you all and say we’re not guilty”. The latter may come from a Eurovision winner but “Show a Little Love” will never come close. As I try to think of something witty to say about this song, I feel like I’m putting more thought into this review than they did into their song. That says it all, really.

Score: 1.5/10

Jovana: There is something retro about this song, something that reminds me of Saturday Night Fever. That kind of sound, disco and funk with modern beats, worked well for Daft Punk and Pharell Williams, but I am not sure it works that well for Rolf Roosalu. It is just too generic and too bland, especially the vapid lyrics.

Score: 6/10

Lukas: This one is quite fun. It is a bit cheesy and old school but for some reason, it works. The chorus is memorable and I like the beat of this song. Is it the best entry in Estonia? Not really. But it is a solid one and can do pretty well. With a strong staging and some dancers, this could do well.

Score: 7/10

It’s not aweful, but it’s so generic. You forget it after a while.

Everything you ever wanted to know about camp disco, rolled into one song. The lyrics don’t help either. (“Are you really sad tonight?”) – No! What if I were happy, and then this song came on?! Never address your listeners unless you really want an answer. Or unless you’re the Bee Gees, I suppose. 4/10

Not that bad. Tolerable. I mean, I wouldn’t turn it off if it was on but really, nothing to write home about here. My style of music not done particularly well.
