eleni foureira fuego cyprus eurovision 2018

After weeks of speculation as to who will represent Cyprus, we finally have an official answer. Cypriot broadcaster RiK has confirmed that Greek star Eleni Foureira will finally get her shot at Eurovision.

Eleni will sing “Fuego” in Lisbon. The song is composed by Alex P, a man with plenty of Eurovision experience. Amongst his hits are Aysel and Arash’s “Always”, as well as Ivi Adamou’s “La La Love”.

Cyprus are also bringing in the big guns when it comes to staging. Sacha Jean-Baptiste returns to help Cyprus again, having worked with Minus One in 2016. With successes including Kristian Kostov’s “Beautiful Mess” behind her too, it’s clear Cyprus are really going all out. And with a title like “Fuego” (Fire), we’re expecting something just as hot, y’all!

Eleni’s Eurovision dreams have been well documented in the past. Foureira almost made it to Eurovision in 2010, when she competed in the 2010 Greek national final with “Kivotos tou Noe”. While she missed out by coming in second place, that did not kill her Eurovision desire.

In 2013 Foureira made another appearance at the Greek national final — but this time as the interval act. She joined Ukraine’s first Eurovision winner Ruslana for an attitude-packed cover of “Wild Dances”.

Eleni also spoke out last year to complain about the Greek broadcaster’s “snub” of never selecting her. Clearly, she’s decided that enough is enough and it’s time for a change, and RiK were more than happy to bring her in!

“Fuego” will be released in the coming weeks, with no official date set yet. If it’s an uptempo hit though, we’d risk saying that Eleni might even close the first semi-final, where she performs in the second half.

What do you think of Cyprus’ decision to select Eleni? Are you excited to finally see her get a shot at Eurovision? Let us know all your thoughts in the comments section below!

Sacha Jean-Baptiste’s stagings aren’t always good. Cyprus 2016 was kinda boring, it didn’t do justice to their pop-rock song. Australia 2017 is another example.

Yep. I think her only good ones have been with Armenia in 2016 and 2017 and that’s only because she did the camera work for Armenia and stage direction and hired the choreographers for 2017 . She didn’t do the background visuals, clothing design etc…

Well, since Spain won’t bring the fuego to the party, Cyprus might as well snatch the chance…

She’ll do very well for Cyprus.

I’m a bit upset she didn’t represent Greece, but Greece’s loss will be Cyprus’ gain.

So in others words, it’s 100% confirmed that Cyprus will receive 48 points from Greece this year.

48 points.

24 from Albania (12 jury + 12 televoting)

She is from Albania. She was raised in Greece and has established a career in Greece & Cyprus

Lettuce see if Albania betrays Italy like this. Maybe they’re mad at Eleni hiding her Albanian nationality until 2014 and saying she was Brazilian.

I hope it’s an ethnic song like her song Vassilisa. She’s amazing! She’s what Cyprus needs and she’s what Eurovision needs. Camera loves and she loves the camera….the whole thing!

Albania and Greece are both in semi 1, which means she has guaranteed 48 points already. I think the threshold for qualification has been around 100 points in the last 2 years, so all she needs is around 50-60 points. She can easily collect that much with an Alex P song, unless she gives a terrible vocal performance. We also know that Azerbaijan, Armenia and Bulgaria will be friendly to Cyprus- so I will be shocked if she does not qualify.

Do you think the problem is her being of Albanian descent?

Ern

No, not at all.

I think it’s a simple matter of Eleni not wanting to participate in another national final. After all, Eleni could have entered the Greek final this year, yet she didn’t.

Also, things with ERT are very political. They do what they do for internal reasons.

Well, we need hot people with catchy dance tunes. I hope for the best (e.i. Kalomira or Ani Lorak), but remain open to all options. Anyway, welcome Eleni!

Does the title imply that the song is in Spanish, or is it just the case like Dai Laga, which is basically an English song with one repeated phrase in another language?

So so happy for Cyprus! I’ll say that I have my doubts about Eleni’s vocal performance which has to be flawless. And I’ll still have them until the rehearsals. However, Cyprus shows they aim high, instead our broadcaster ERT, doesn’t seem to have a plan and I’m so disappointed. Back to Cyprus, I really want them to do well and this year they have a chance. An up-beat song which seems to fit Eleni’s personality and music style. It wil stand out in a potential sea of ballads. A song that can showcase Eleni’s stage presence and dance abilities, because… Read more »

Ok … sorry for her fans, but that’s really all I hate. The lyrics take two thousand years to arrive, and the song itself is a kind of dance dated without interest. And then the choreography, hello. Or rather, goodbye!

Ruslana song that is a winner, and Golden Boy that did very well in 2015. So is this what you are judging?

PS: I assume that Cyprus chose the titel of the song for “artistic” reasons and not because the ESC is in Portugal. That would be too much ignorance…

True, that was a bit opportunistic. But at least that got the language right… I still assume that they know that “fuego” means fire in Spanish and that did chose to be in Spanish because they felt like it, and not because it is in Portugal, because in Portugal we speak… Portuguese…

Albanians won’t vote for her ?? she denied her origin and she doesnt even speaks Albanian, and during an interview she and the journalist were speeking in Greek (2 Albanians in albania speaking in greek for albanian audience ??????????) . Im pretty sure wont get enough votes to get 12 Points. But can’t deny she is very good on giving great performances and she has a good hopefully will do well at ESC ?

@Ian – highly doubt it. Eleni brings her fair share of sexyness to the table and can snatch it. And if Armenia chooses Asmik, things will definitely get heated.
