Latvia: Wiwi Jury reviews Dvines with “More Than Meets the Eye”

8

Just three more songs to go in our Supernova 2018 Wiwi Jury, as Latvia prepares itself to find its next Eurovision star. The show starts on Saturday, February 3 — and we’re definitely ready to get reacquainted with the Riga Beaver!

Our jury is ready to review a duo, as twin sisters Dvines return to Supernova. They last participated in 2016, narrowly missing out on the semi-final. Will they make it to the final this year with “More Than Meets the Eye”?

Dvines — “More Than Meets the Eye”

“More Than Meets The Eye” Reviews

Edgars: Sometimes simplicity is a good thing, but not in this situation. Oceans, wind, sun, moon, stars: there lyrics sound like they belong in a 7th grade poetry contest. The good thing is that these great looking twins can actually sing and they are well known in Latvia – but that could be the only advantage going for them.

Score: 4/10

William: He told her to go look for sun in the rain, she says. And so begins what would be better as a poem than a song. It’s dreamy and magical for sure. But this feels somehow languid and sluggish. When she moans “Eyyyyye-eye eye” I hear the B-52’s line “Driving down the Atlanta hiighhwaaay” on super-slow-mo. It’s artsy and filled with nice sounds, but seems more like a piece for an art installation than Eurovision.

Score: 6/10

Chris: It feels like there’s something good somewhere in “More Than Meets the Eye”. The song might just not be fully realised yet, though. Particularly in the last minute, the song completely runs out of steam – and creativity in the lyrics, too. It’s memorable, at least, but it would need a serious revamp to go much further.

Score: 5.5/10

dvines supernova 2018 2Jordi: “More Than Meets the Eye” will meet my eyes in the sky. The song truly brings me to a very cloudy heaven and its melody feels dreamy. You can easily close your eyes daydream all song long. That’s a good feeling. But on the other hand, there’s no hook. Maybe daydreaming means you miss the whole show. Although it has a strong appeal, it’s still slightly bland. She already has the lyrics and the voice. Give me the explosion!

Score: 6/10

Robyn: “More Than Meets the Eye” has a really lovely, dreamy feeling and is a pleasure to listen to. But it doesn’t seem like a good match for Eurovision. It feels more like background music, rather than the main entertainment. Particularly, it seems to be building to a huge chorus, but the chorus instead takes things into a more subdued direction.

Score: 6.5/10

Kristin: I’m liking this. It has a soft, melodic quality about it, and gives the listener a form of tranquillity. Is it “Eurovision material”, though? Well, why not? Latvia has shown through the years, that they are far from afraid to try different things. Why not give the dreamy, melodic pop a chance? With the right staging and lighting, Dvines could easily capture everyone´s heart. Don’t write this off.

Score: 8/10

Jonathan: While slightly repetitive, “More Than Meets The Eye” is a nice little song that is one of the more pleasant to listen to in this year’s Supernova line-up. It’s calming and takes you away from life’s problems for three minutes. But this is also where it’s downfall lies. Unless they can make this come to life on stage, it’s probably still too much like background music to be a good Eurovision entry.
