lauris valters supernova 2018 1

Latvia’s Supernova 2018 kicks off tomorrow, but that means our Wiwi Jury is nearly over too! Sad face – but our team of music un-professionals is moving on to the penultimate song in their reviews.

Lauris Valters returns to Supernova after making it to the semi-final last year. With his new track, “Lovers Bliss”, he looks to go one step further. What does our Jury think of it, though?

Lauris Valters — “Lovers Bliss”

“Lovers Bliss” Reviews

Chris: An immediate improvement on Lauris’ “Magic Years” from the 2017 contest. The entire production feels like a step up and a lot less amateur. It’s maybe still not quite right for either Supernova or Eurovision — this feels like it would be at its best with a fully live band — but it’s an enjoyable three minutes.

Score: 6/10

Jonathan: “Lovers Bliss” is by all means not the worst entry in this year’s Supernova, but it’s not pushing enough boundaries to be the best either. The song has a clear structure, and a catchy chorus, which, once stuck in your head, you don’t feel the urge to tear your hair out. But, it still feels slightly like a demo version at the moment, though if given a revamp then it could be quite a solid entry.

Score: 6/10

Edgars: Lauris was a surprise of last year’s Supernova, and he could be a surprise here as well. Good voice, with some funky guitar and playing with the backing vocals. Lauris knows how to make uplifting songs and sure he is on his way to win “Supernova” some day. Just probably not this year.

Score: 6/10

lauris valters supernova 2018 2Jordi: Bring me to the dance floor! It’s funky, soulful, and Eurovision needs more of this upbeat positive fun! Whether this is the right song to Eurovision or just the funk I’ve been always dreaming of, I am a little worried. The rhythm is on point, but the whole composition is not convincing. The shoes might burn the dance floor, but this song could fail to light up the scores…

Score: 6.5/10

Kristin: The production here seems a little bit hasty. Like they were rushing it in order to make a deadline, and therefore it comes off as half finished. Oh, and yelling “Lovers Bliss, yeah!” does not help. It’s scary, okay. But Lauris is a talented singer, judging by his earlier work. This song isn’t horrible in any sense. Its just not as good as it wants to be.

Score: 5.5/10

William: When a creepy, breathy man says he has to tell you something (and as his friends huff in the background), you know it’s time to run. If you don’t believe me then just listen to this dated number with basic verses and a chaotic sound, which includes a very tedious electric guitar. If this is Lover’s Bliss, I’d hate to see his take on divorce.

Score: 2.5/10

Robyn: “Lovers Bliss” starts off sounding like it’s building up to something really monumental. But when the chorus comes, it seems to have forgotten to be a chorus. Unless shouting “Lovers Bliss! Oh yeah!” counts a chorus. There are a lot of good ideas in the song, but it really needs to have gone back to the studio and reworked into something stronger.

Score: 6/10

Loved Lauris last year, like him again this year. This is not trying to win but it is still a good song. His voice is good and he has his own style. To do better in Supernova, he needs some help with his songwriting as you know exactly what you are going to get with him. Something with a few more mainstream elements would do him well.

Have grown to find it ok from an utterly heinous entry.
