eleanor cassar mesc 2018

The results are in! We asked y’all back on January 4, when all 16 entries were revealed for Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2018, who you wanted to see win. With 5,874 votes cast in total, you’ve chosen Eleanor Cassar as your favourite with “Back to Life”!

Eleanor makes her return to MESC after not participating since 2012. She’s previously placed in the top ten on five occasions, even finishing 2nd in 2009 with “Someday”.

“Back to Life” is co-written by two familiar faces amongst Eurovision and national final entries, Jonas Gladnikoff and Michael James Down. And clearly, y’all think that this could be a hit for Malta at Eurovision.

Eleanor received 760 votes in total, just under 13% of the vote.

Not far behind here though was Lawrence Gray, with his track “Love Renegade”. Lawrence is another long-time MESC veteran, hoping to finally win and make it to Eurovision. He’s certainly picked up fans along the way, as he took 736 votes.

And just behind Lawrence comes Tiziana. It’s not her first time at MESC, but she sings “First Time” nonetheless. She received 732 votes, just four off Lawrence.

Finally, the top five is rounded off by Brooke (who received 600 votes) and Christabelle (482 votes).

I am over the moon now! Taboo might be the fastest grower in ESC history. Until this morning, she was my 9th, with 5/10 score. Today, I read what Christabelle meant with the song, and the song grew to my 4th, with score going to 7.5/10. After the live, she jumped to my joint 1st. I’ll re-value the score, but it’s certainly over 8. Congrats, Malta! Congrats, Christabelle!

Okay, I have my favorite song of tonight – Dawra Tond! Too bad it’s inelligible. 🙂

If you ask me, it’s between Christabelle, Dwett, Micallefs and Eleanor. I expect Brooke can still be the winner, even though I wouldn’t pick her. Dark horses: Tiziana, Avenue Sky (they got a loud applause), perhaps Deborah C, for repetition.

How about Lawrence Gray for using those x-rated backing dancers? 😀

Ha ha… dancers were awesome! Totally incompatible with the song, though. That is what I was saying about the sincerity issue. The whole act is dramatic and made to impress, while the song is intimate and romantic. It turns out poser-ish.

Yeah. It reminded me of the late 90s entries, when English commentator Sir Terry Wogan had to restrain himself on air because of the sexy backing dancers! 😀

So after all performances, my favourites are:
1. Christabelle “Taboo”
2. Richard & Joe “Song for Dad”
3. Eleanor Cassar “Back to life”
4. Jasmine “Supernovas”
5. Brooke “Heart of Gold”
6. Aidan “Dai Laga”
7. Petra “Evolution”

Any of those 7 I would be happy with. 🙂

Well, Petra and her dancer both did their best trying to convince us Evolution is a good song. Didn’t succeed, but they truly tried.

Deborah C got to perform again. Will she benefit from it in televote? Hmm…

Petra’s feminist scream-fest was hilarious, and actually quite good.
Oh, and Deborah C gets to go again, because of “technical issues” the first time.

“Technical issues” being of vocal nature I assume 🙂

If there’s any justice, Christabelle deserves to win with that performance. Incredible choreography. Well done.

Agreed! Most impressive performance direction, followed by Dwett and Tiziana.

Brooke has all the right pipes and tools to win. This might be her year.
There’s just something… missing, though. I can’t quite articulate what it is.

Brooke was… as expected, let’s put it like that. Christabelle, on the other hand, crushed it! Knowing the story behind the song makes me only appreciate it more. Honestly, now I have a hunch she might win.

But it’s Malta, so who knows?

If she does, Malta will also have a worthy winner! Since Switzerland has no really bad songs, that means that in that case, first 7 will be ranking among the good. That would be great!

The production is just OK. I mean this is Malta, not Sweden, Russia, Azerbaijan, Italy etc. It’s a very small country.

You can say that again! Now I am impressed by her more than I imagined! Also worth noting is how Tiziana and Rhiannon elevated their songs with amazing vocal performances.

Yes, they did. 🙂
Although, Rihannon I thought over-sang, especially at the end of the song. I’m looking forward to Christabelle.

I am still skeptical that newcomers like Dwett can possibly win MESC, but after THAT good performance, I am at least hopeful for a good position.

The Micalleffs just crushed it! Wow, was this emotional! That is the sentiment you can’t fake. This was authentic. I would be happy if they won!

So, both of my favorite acts at least justified my love for their songs in live. Whatever happens, they can be proud!

Agreed on “Song for Dad”. Not agreed on “Breaking Point”. The woman singer was flat on the top notes and tried to cover it with vibrato. Not good; I was disappointed.
Jasmine impressed me, though. 🙂

Didn’t notice. I was swayed by their chemistry. 🙂

Agreed on Jasmine, she did good!

I wish they would show more of backdrop during the Song for Dad song, so touching to see that the son is actually a carbon copy of his young dad. But to be fair even what they showed was enough for me and to start sobbing. Such an emotional song! Love it

I know why people hate ballads, but when you listen to “Back to Life”, it’s actaully kinda mid-tempo. 🙂

I just checked the running order and it finishes with Petra’s Evolution. Claudia Faniello won last year from the final spot. Let that sink in! 😮

You never know what you’re going to get with Malta. The time is near, let us enjoy the show! I’m really excited!

Hopefully, the busiest Eurovision month is here! (wiwibloggs I hope you post these “super Saturday” articles like last year)

Tiziana coming third is proof that she will do well tonight. Yes, the song is rather weak but the people absolutely love her here and she has a massive fan base. People in Malta do not vote for the song but for the artist since we are such a small country, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see her in the Top 5 with the televote.

It just goes to show, one can never predict Malta’s selection. It’s tough this year. I’m really looking forward to tonight! 🙂

I have a feeling the father and son team will represent Malta this year. If not, Eleanor Cassar or Brooke. Some good songs this year from Malta. The only problem with their selection process is that it’s far too long.

MESC far too long; hat are you talking about? It’s happening in only ONE night, tonight. In comparison, Romanian NF lasts six weeks, so does the Swedish one. Lithuanian one lasts even longer.

For me only Richard and Joe stands a chance of qualifying if chosen for Lisbon. Lovely, sweet song that will sure resonate with viewers.

What’s with Lawrence and tiziana in 2nd and 3rd! Remove them and then you’d have a credible result.

Lawrence 2nd? You’re kidding, right? I think that song is terrible.
I would choose Deborah C or Brooke. Eleanor could elevate her song live as well.
