The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to listen to and rank the 20 songs competing in Eesti Laul 2018. Next is Eurovision 2015 singer Stig Rästa with “Home”. Did we roll out the welcome mat for him? Read on to find out!

Stig Rästa – “Home”

“Home” reviews

Angus: Stig has ditched the drama and gone for something calmer. But while “Home” is breezy, mellow and lyrically smart, it’s also a little bit boring and feels like Eurovision by numbers. Simplistic guitar backed songs have been done before, and done very successfully, but this isn’t bringing anything new to the table. Smart lyrics can’t compensate for lack of impact and it feels as though after multiple appearances in recent years, Stig has lost is lustre.

Score: 6/10

Chris: Sweet, safe and cheesy, and all the better for it. “Home” feels like a thematic prequel to the inevitable drama of “Goodbye to Yesterday”. It’s likely going to come down to how well Stig can sell “heartwarming” on stage. If he can, then I’d easily see this at Eurovision — and doing well.

Score: 8/10

Deban: “Home” is a likeable pop tune that strums and shapes into an earworm. Stig Rasta has a knack for crafting radio-friendly pop. This probably won’t win Eesti Laul, nor will it bring the Eurovision trophy home. However, it is a respectable entry that reads like an effortless classic.

Score: 7/10

Antranig: Stig Rästa is an underrated genius — “Goodbye to Yesterday” should have won Eurovision 2015 and “Play” deserved a lot more the following year. He never disappoints and with “Home” he has crafted the feel-good track of 2018. It plays things a little safe and you would imagine some very simple staging unlike his dramatic duet with Elina Born. It doesn’t scream Eurovision winner this time but this will make you smile. It’s going straight onto my future wedding playlist.

Score: 9/10

Robyn: “Home” is about as far removed as possible from the murderous “Goodbye to Yesterday”. But it works. Perhaps it’s just easier to imagine Stig cuddling up with his bae for a little Netflix and chill. “Home” is really sweet and one of the strongest songs in Eesti Laul 2018. But somehow it feels like something is missing. Let’s see what the live performance brings.

Score: 7.5/10

Sebastian: “Home” is a very nice, contemporary song that would fit well on almost any radio playlist across the western world. It’s a song you should be drinking coffee to on a Sunday morning. I’m not sure this will shake up the top end of a Eurovision leaderboard, but it is sweet. Here’s hoping a song like this might make Stig crack a smile on stage.

Score: 6.5/10

Yes, it sounds like “Playing with numbers” at times. Yes, it seems very Ed Sheeran. But it’s one of my favourite songs. It’s sweet and beautiful with a strong chorus. It gives me “Tom Dice” vibes. I don’t know if it’s going to win the NF, but I’ll have this in my playlist fo sure.

Stig should stop giving all his best songs to other artists.

This is really overrated… i think most people is behind this because is Stig, not because the “mediocre” song.

Sweet song, but he could do so much better. Hopefully it’s still enough to make him win Eesti Laul. Btw, if he wins and the GOT line needs to be replaced, I suggest replacing it with “ESC” ;D

I like this song and it sounds very contemporary. Since it’s too sweet and all the staging needs to deliver for him. I wouldn’t mind this being the winner however the way the odds for Estonia are shooting up I think it’s a foregone conclusion for some that La Forza is probably winning.

Ed Sheeran is so annoying, anybody who wants to be like him (Stig), or sing with him (Levina) deserves nothing. British music (Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Adele…) is so overrated. You will go nowhere if you try to copy that. Just overrated music industry is the British one, and this is why they do bad in Eurovision, not because people expect Ed Sheeran himself to represent UK.

btw, Ed Sheeran was in GoT and fans hated it, made him close his instagram, or something like that. Just go away Ed Sheeran.

your stupid country probably doesn’t have an industry
by a secondary school kid from the UK
which has the one of the best industries for music in the WORLD.

The song on its own is pretty good. My issue is with Stig’s live performances – (he already knows the issues so i won’t dwell on them here). Sufficed to say, this could be a winner at Eesti Laul if he gets it right on the night. 8/10

Home is a song with a lot of already seen elements. It’s melting from sentimentality and sugary metaphors. Still, it’s sing-a-long and feel-good qualities are hard to deny. It makes you feel warm inside, cause Stig does it with ease. Honestly, I have a hunch that either this or La Forza will end-up winning. I’d prefer La Forza, but Home is still a strong entry.

7.5/10

PS. GoT reference – brilliant or cringy? Cannot decide…

He looks good! He’s barely any different at all. And even if he didn’t, this is not a beauty contest, so don’t be catty.

It’s not a beauty contest, except when Wiwibloggs decides to run its “Next Top Model” contest. #LookAtOurselves

I know you dislike that contest and it’s not without an argument. However, I still find it very different complimenting ones you find beautiful from shaming those you don’t. I mean, even you called a guy ‘hot’ a few times in the comments. You didn’t call someone ‘ugly’. Key difference.

My “hot” comments aren’t a contest or a rating though. By definition, whoever loses a beauty contest is the least beautiful, hence my objections to it. Does that make sense?

Absolutely! That’s why even if this contest has to take place (which I am personally somewhat neutral about), I already had an idea that only top 5 / top 10 places should be released publically. The reason is exactly what you said; nobody needs to know who didn’t have enough votes.

What a cute attempt to copy Ed Sheeran. He ain’t winning anything with this song. Choose La Forza or nothing… Not that the song is bad, it’s jusz not really memorable. i would even call it plain boring… 6/10 sorry Stig. You should have sticked with the Goodbye to yesterday style.

I guess he is (basically) agreeing with you, as he truly doesn’t like Stig’s song and is a big fan of La Forza. (I think I know some things about Polegend’s taste around here, correct me if I’m wrong) 🙂

How did NO ONE point out the blatant attempt at ripping off Ed Sheeran? Such a reductive song.

His look as of late, the sound of this song, heck even his accent, is all a tragic attempt at reproducing the current biggest music sensation. To think that Goodbye to Yesterday sold him to our eyes as someone with artistry… yikes!

It does sound like Stig Rästa covering Ed Sheeran. I mean, not a problem, musical success will influence others, but I thought Stig was a bit more original. Oh well, cringe song, done quite well. Hopefully won’t win but I don’t hate it.
