The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to review the qualifying acts from Lithuania’s Eurovizijos Atranka 2018. Next we listen to GeraiGerai & Silvija Pankunaite and “More Than You Know” and Greta Zazza and “Broken Shadows”. Did these songs bring us out of the shadows? Read on to find out!

GeraiGerai & Silvija Pankunaite – “More Than You Know”

“More Than You Know” reviews

Lukas: This entry is a grower because at first I did not really like it but now it’s one of the better entries this year. The electronic style of this song works so well with Silvija’s voice and the backing singers. The hook with “ooh ooh ooh” is very good too and gets stuck in your head. The staging is very cool too with the avant-garde styling.

Score: 8/10

Natalie: Work those basslines and eyeshadow hard, my guy! As far as electro dance songs go, this is definitely a slow burner. I’ve never felt a kickdrum lead up for so long. I also kinda wish the singers let the music do more of the work as well, “ooh ooh ooh” is a bit distracting. But still, I love the gentleness and the fun of this one. It’s a nice dancy track without being too forced. Take that slick production and add a bit more polish and less repetitiveness, and something really nice might develop.

Score: 7.5/10

Robyn: There’s a lot going on here and not all of it is good. The song drops the ball with its weak chorus — those “ooh-oohs” sound like a placeholder that wasn’t swapped out with real lyrics. In the end, the crazy costumes of the duo end up being the most memorable part of the performance, with GeraiGerai’s giant raver jacket hogging too much of the limelight.

Score: 6/10

Barnabas: The only thing I could highlight from “More than you know” is the instrumental. Because the lyrics, the melody and the chorus is just something that I’d rather not pay attention to.

Score: 5/10

Sebastian: Zaniness served up on a platter, “More Than You Know” is by far the most captivating entry from Lithuania this year – be it for good or bad reasons. While it might sound like reject track from Kylie Minogue – scrap that – Dannii Minogue, GeraiGerai and Silvija extract as much juice from this average electro dance track and make it work. Its weakness is its complete change in tempo and melody from about 2 minutes in – an unnecessary addition.

Score: 7/10

Greta Zazza – “Broken Shadows”

“Broken Shadows” reviews

Barnabas: A pop ballad that’s easy to sing along with, Greta brings a strong package that has “Eurovision” written all over it. It’s not the most dramatic song that you’ll hear this year, but she delivers it with a big dose of slayage.

Score: 7.5/10

Lukas: Last year Greta was one my favourites but this year her entry is very disappointing. “Broken Shadows” is an okay ballad but there are better ballads in Lithuania this year, like Ieva and Milda. The true emotions are nice but that is not enough and Greta’s vocal was not the strongest live this time.

Score: 6.5/10

Natalie: No, it isn’t as good as “Like I Love You”. It’s much more generic and lacks energy. But it is a killer modern power ballad, of course held together by Greta’s incredible voice. It has substance, emotion and a hell of a lot of passion. I do wish the energy kicked up a bit though, particularly during the “we are we are we are” final verse, I was craving a bit more, especially since we know that Greta can deliver energy so well. It’s still a great song though, Greta is amazing.

Score: 7/10

Robyn: “Broken Shadows” sounds like something from Malta’s national final — a big shouty ballad about how we are all messed up. It’s 2018 — ballads like this sound dated and offer nothing new or memorable for a Eurovision performance. Greta could do so much better. And what even is a “broken shadow”?

Score: 5/10

Sebastian: Putting aside the ultra-cliched and cringe ‘shadow’ reference, the strength of “Broken Shadow” lies in the very capable Greta Zazza, who turns this average ballad into a powerful, anthemic track. Greta effortlessly travels between strength and vulnerability through her voice, and should be a contender to win just on that alone. But here’s hoping she comes back next year with a better song.

“More Than You Know”: Nice start. Then it loses me. Strange entry.
4/10
“Broken Shadows”: The verses are weak but the chorus is strong. Gretta definitely has a great voice, we already know this from last year. I like it.

GERAIGERAI & SILVIJA PANKUNAITE song is one of the best in the national selection season. It takes us on such a musical journey with many twists and turns. This is an 8.5 for me. Greta Zazza should not score higher than this.

Both are a 7.5/10 for me. Lithuanian songs are usually pretty underrated.

Am I the only person hearing Annica And Kimmo’s “Good Enough” when listening to Greta Zazza’s song?
