She’s a former Britain’s Got Talent finalist, who reached the live final of the show in 2013. And now the girl is getting back in the televised singing game and will make a run for Eurovision 2018.

Asanda will sing “Legends” at Eurovision: You Decide 2018, hoping to fly the United Kingdom’s flag in Lisbon. Who decides? You decide! And to help you do that the 16-year-old caught up with our William Lee Adams to talk about her song, musicals and more.

She may be the favourite on most polls and discussion forums, but Asanda is trying to tune that out, saying it’s an “overwhelming” feeling.

“I am trying to be as humble as possible and just work hard and focus on what I have to do,” she says.

“I just heard the instrumental and I said, ‘I need this song, I want it.’ I gave my all in the studio and the minute I heard the hook I was like, ‘I gotta have this one honey.'”

To many the unique instrumentation conjures up the Amazon or even the soundtrack to The Lion King. But how does she describe the song?

“It takes you back to Africa and RnB. It has different genres.  It’s really fun and it’s something that anyone can relate to — it’s energetic, it’s motivational, it can encourage people, so I’m really excited and I’m just really grateful.”

As the song speaks of legends, it was only natural we find out who her legends are.

“I go way back — Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Whitney, Beyonce, Rihanna.”

And like so many of her own legends, she’s hoping to inspire people with her upbeat track.

“You know everyone has their own time and purpose and you can make it and you should never doubt yourself, because everyone is a legend. You don’t have to be a legend in singing. You can have something you’re really good at and if you just pursue it and put your mind into it, then you’re a legend, you’re unbreakable and no one can touch you.”

As for her stage show, “it’s about having energy and having fun. If you have fun then it comes out.” So does that mean she’ll be dancing? “Oh honey, no question…My body’s aching right now — but I’m ready for next week.”

Finally she has a message for all of you out there: “Thank you for your support, may God bless you and you’re a legend as well. And let’s just have fun and let’s just enjoy. You know you only live once, so let’s just make it.”

Eurovision: You Decide will take place on February 7, and will be hosted by Mel Giedroyc and Eurovision 2015 winner Måns Zelmerlöw. The show — directed by scriptwriter Edward Af Sillén — takes place in the historic Brighton Dome.

This is the genre people expect from Moldova like Kirkorov knows very well, this is why he had that uptempo song for Doredos. UK will do better with Jaz. It’s not about good or bad, it’s just people see countries differently. Jaz is so British, I can tell from one billion songs.

Rezo wrote this. I miss your videos, Rezo! 🙂
I hope Asanda doesn’t hurt too much from all the choreo practice. Probably just a figure of speech? (Aching?)
