The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — travelled to Iceland to review the acts of Söngvakeppnin 2018. Up next is Guðmundur Þórarinsson performing “Colours“. Is Guðmundur painting the colour of our lives? Read on to find out!

Guðmundur Þórarinsson – “Colours”

“Colours” reviews

Antranig: I enjoy the playful lyrics and the Sebalter whistling. This feels like it should be on the soundtrack of a Disney movie rather than the Eurovision stage. I can’t stop picturing Chicken Little screaming “the sky is falling” when I hear those lyrics. A pleasant three minutes of music and certainly one of the best songs of Söngvakeppnin 2018 but ultimately Iceland should be looking for better.

Score: 7/10

Robyn: It’s becoming clear that as well as “Despacito”-inspired songs, we’re also going to see plenty inspired by Ed Sheeran. Technically “Colours” is a good song. The trouble is, it’s just too generic. It could be sitting in the Spotify playlist of so many countries. I suspect the success of “Colours” at Söngvakeppnin will depend on the staging. There needs to be something more than just the chill groove of the song.

Score: 7/10

Barnabas: A really sweet and relaxing love song, where the smooth guitars blend very well together with Gudmundur’s vocals. The only weakness of the song is that it lacks the peak which would make it actually memorable.

Score: 7/10

Chris:  Gudmundur’s whistling isn’t quite on the level of Sebalter, but otherwise this is actually quite charming. There’s plenty worse songs than “Colours” in this year’s Söngvakeppnin, too. It’s maybe a little too bland for Eurovision, but if he sells this well on stage, who knows.

Score: 5.5/10

Luis: Pantone set “Ultraviolet” as their Colour of the Year for 2018. That’s a strong and shiny violet that’s far away from this entry’s “Colours”. After hearing this, Gudmundur probably wants to colour his lover’s world in Rose Quartz and Serenity, which were 2016’s colours. Both because his song is much quieter and more harmless and because it feels as if it was released two years ago.

Score: 5/10

Natalie: The whistling honestly saved this song for me. I thought it would just be another lazy pop song exactly like every other song with the lyrics “this time I’m telling you”. But strangely, that whistling just added something sweet and cheerful to this otherwise completely banal effort. I just wish I remembered more than a few seconds of this three minute song.

Score: 5.5/10

It’s ok. Beautiful voice. But so cliche. Not a fan.

Given the low level of the songs in this year’s Söngvakeppnin, this song could be a good choice for Lisbon.

The song is enjoyable and his voice is beautiful.

The whistling killed this song for me. 🙁

This is no doubt one of the better entries in Iceland. Though it is very sweet and sorta old-fashioned they’ve added backing instruments to make it sound 21st century.

A 7/10.

I like this one! It’s relaxing and cute. Somehow it doesn’t get as childish as it could have been. 7/10
