Monsters Saara Aalto UMK 2018

After a rocky start on the X Factor UK, she turned her fortunes around with a series of stellar performances, including a very memorable turn during Fright Night. And with “Monsters” — the first of her potential Eurovision 2018 songs — Saara Aalto is once again making those Halloween feels feel sooooo good.

This uptempo dance number has a dark title yet is full of light — its message of perseverance and pushing past haters and hangups comes with a delightful tropical feel. Best of all it showcases Saara’s voice even amid all the clangs and electro bangs. Eurovision 2018 competitors beware…

The “Monsters” lyrics make it clear that Miss Aalto has had a self-reckoning. Any and all tricks once used to pull her down have lost their power. She’s found her self — and her supporters — and is feeling invincible tonight. As she sings, sometimes you have to hit the bottom to start moving toward the top.

“At my worst I found my army strong/ all the demons are gone/ You can try and scare me now, but I ain’t scared no more/ I ain’t scared no more.”

“Monsters” music video — Saara Aalto

Listen to Saara Aalto’s “Monsters” on Spotify (if it’s midnight in your country)

The video brings that story to life with Saara taking residence in what appears to be a Gothic mansion filled with a very colourful cast of avant-garde angels and outré creatures. If these fabulous folk were hiding under our beds, we’d make friends with them too.

Showing off her stunning décolletage in a low-cut black number, Saara adds intrigue with a black choker that curls around her neck and down her bosom. Given the atmosphere, it might be interpreted as a snake or a leash — but she casts it off when she slips into a white necklace, perhaps a symbol of the new Saara who is out there and ready to slay. That white necklace also snakes down her back — and literally down her spine — suggesting her trials and tribulations have given her a very firm backbone.

Hopeful, optimistic and a real ear worm, I see this jumping to the top of many Eurovision 2018 lists very soon indeed. And it isn’t even her selected entry yet!

Finland’s Eurovision 2018 act — who continues to enjoy a wave of momentum following her participation on UK X Factor and her gig judging X Factor Suomi — will release her songs on three consecutive Fridays — 9 February, 16 February and 23 February. Have your Twitter up and running and get ready to shout TGIF! (And note that’s TGIF Finland time…so 22:01 GMT).

“Monsters” lyrics — Saara Aalto

Closed my eyes, so I couldn’t see it

Felt so numb, but now I’m ready to feel it

So tonight I’m making friends

with all the creatures hiding under my bed

I ain’t gonna hold on to these monsters anymore

Now I’m gonna let in all the light, tear down the walls

At my worst I found my army strong

all the demons are gone

You can try and scare me now, but I ain’t scared no more

I ain’t scared no more

I ain’t, I ain’t scared no  more

It’s my life, I’m ready to lead it

I’m gonna roll the dice, you better believe it

So tonight I’m making friends with all the creatures that are hiding there under my bed

I ain’t gonna hold on to these monsters anymore

Now I’m gonna let in all the light, tear down the walls

At my worst I found my army strong

all the demons are gone

You can try and scare me now, but I ain’t scared no more

I ain’t, I ain’t scared no more

I ain’t, I ain’t scared no more

No more

I ain’t scared no more

Are you loving it? Is this going to be tough to beat at UMK? Let us know down below!

Agree this is a really really good catchy song. I seriously don’t know what kind of song many people want from her with all these critical comments. This is absolutely great! and yes if this goes to Lisbon , it will do very well indeed. We know her live performances are outstanding !

Y’all, EDM is a genre, not something only Cascada or Loreen can do. Cheers.

And no, it’s not dated.

Yes it’s dated. Someone mentioned Cascada. I agree. All this nagging about generic songs in MF but this is quite ok? I don’t like her voice either. Sounds childish.

It’s well-produced, but in my opinion it’s not really that catchy… I’m not impressed, waiting for two other songs.

It’s very well produced but there is nothing special or astounding about it, just another pop song. hope her other 2 songs are better.

Too dated. I confide the best and winning song will be the last revealed, though.

this song is for the moment the strongest heard from a scandinavian country this year… and that’s only a 7/10 for me (but a final qualifier for sure). promising for the 2 incoming umk songs.

I really like the video, but the song is so generic and forgettable, almost noise pollution. I hope the other two are much better, but I am not keeping my expectations high… I am not sure if that would actually pass the semi…

If Saara’s smart, she’ll give the televoter’s one clear choice that’s so much better than the other two that it’ll definitely win. Presumably the third song, save the best for last.
Regardless, I consider this song a solid start. Not a winner. But with an amazing song, Saara absolutely has got what it takes to take the trophy back to Finland. I for one would be delighted about that and as it stands, Finland is the only remaining hope the entire Nordic countries have got for this year. Sweden sucks so far.

I love Saara, and her voice is always amazing. As for the song, its very much a typical power anthem pop song. The selling point is Saara herself but this song is just okay. Its purely a 6.5/10. We still have two more songs that I will look forward to greatly.

Strong vocals and a catchy chorus, but I’m waiting on the other two possible songs for something that might be just the slightest bit better. She’s up against “Fuego” in her semi-final half, which looks to also be an upbeat-type party song. If that’s the case, she might want something a bit more distinct.

@Joe, i think Saara’s vocals will be way better than Eleni’s. So, i think Saara will stand out.

That could be. I think people are underrating how many power players are in the first semi, considering how many big countries are in the second. The competition here includes the likes of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Israel, Austria, Cyprus, Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Belgium, all of whom have done well in recent years, so I’m really hoping some of the underdogs can pull through (already liking the high hopes for the Czech Republic, and I remain cautiously optimistic for Switzerland).

It’s clear this isn’t Saara’s favorite track or she would not release it first. The best will probably be the last one we hear. It’s fine but nothing earth shattering. Curious to see how it’s staged. Brian Friedman knows what he’s doing. We know Saara’s voice will be on point. I think it’s missing a strong hook. I’m sure Saara has already won both OGEA and Second Chance songs be damned because fans are fanatics. This would not win.

early 2010s spawned some of the best upbeat tracks ever (and is pretty much what i mostly listen to), ‘dated’ doesn’t discount its merits, so it’s always a delight when a new track comes along with a hint of BANG! go saaaaaraa

Raul78

I don’t want to throw any shade, if people like it I am happy for them, but in my opinion this is really generic and dated…. in a bad way. Hopefully the other tracks are better.

“Dated” is the laziest way to try to tear down a song. Like, what does that even mean anymore? People use dated to criticize songs for sounding like theyre from the 90s, 00s, and even now the early 10s, its ridiculous. And even then, just because a song sounds like its from there – who cares!? Doesn’t automatically mean its bad man.

Dated means more than just it sounds like the 90s or 00s. It means that it sounds like something from another time, not something fresh and new. You have throwback songs or vintage songs like the ones that Bruno Mars makes that take a lot of inspiration from the 80s and 90s music. Those songs are good but the dated ones just sound out of place and slightly lazy. I’m not saying that Saara’s is like this but it is not a wow song.

People are seriously saying this would flop at Eurovision? This sounds similar to If Love Was A Crime and look how well that did. This song is a bop and with the right staging it will slay in Lisbon.

It’s well produced and enjoyable, but it’s also very generic and the lyrics are uninspired. I like how she singed it though, so I’m cautiously optimistic about the next 2 songs.

the chorus isn’t strong enough and i don’t think it suits her voice. not a bad song but not for eurovision and also not for her. however, she definitely has the means to produce a great song and im hoping for the other two options to be even better

It sounds like a rejected Lady Gaga song from 2009, not to mention some of the lines have too many syllables. It sounded at little cheap at first but aside from that production is fine and she sings it well but she definitely needs a better song

That white necklace you guys talked about in the article, I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to symbolize her having a backbone now. Since it goes down her back and kind of literally looks like a backbone.
