Ermal Meta Fabrizio Moro Italy Eurovision 2018

The 68th edition of the Sanremo Music Festival has come to an end and, as expected, Ermal Meta and Fabrizio Moro won the crown and the traditional “leoncino” — the little golden lion awarded to the sanremese winner.

The two songwriters emerged as the clear favourites in the competition with “Non mi avete fatto niente” from the announcement of the line-up. The song was well received by both the public and critics.

During the week, it seemed that second placed group Lo Stato Sociale was heading to a surprising victory. But the winners overshadowed all the competitors in every field, with millions of views on YouTube, thousands of Spotify streams and the first place on iTunes Italy.

RAI still didn’t release an official statement but Ermal and Fabrizio announced that they will represent Italy in Lisbon during the traditional press conference after the final.

FINAL RESULTS

As with last night, the overall combined results consisted of televoting (50%), the press jury (30%) and the expert jury (20%). All 20 Campioni finalists started off with a clean slate when they performed their entries on the night.

After the first round of voting, Annalisa, Lo Stato Sociale and Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro advanced to the second and last round. In the end, it was the duo who emerged triumphant!

THE WINNERS

Ermal Meta (born 20 April 1981) is an Italian-Albanian singer-songwriter. He started his career as a member of Italian bands Ameba4 and La Fame di Camilla.

After becoming a songwriter for several Italian artists — including Marco Mengoni, Emma Marrone and Francesca Michielin, he launched his solo career, releasing three studio albums: “Umano” in 2016, “Vietato morire” in 2017 and “Non abbiamo armi” in 2018.

He placed third in the Newcomers section of Sanremo 2016 with “Odio le favole” and also third in the main competition of Sanremo 2017 with “Vietato morire“, receiving the “Mia Martini” Critics’ Prize.

Fabrizio Mobrici (born 9 April 1975), known by his stage name Fabrizio Moro, released his self-titled debut album in 2000 and achieved commercial success in 2007, after winning the Newcomers’ Section of Sanremo with his entry “Pensa“. The song became a number-one hit in Italy.

As of 2018, he has released ten studio albums. He also wrote songs for other artists, including band Stadio and Noemi.

I’ve read the english translation, but still I don’t understand.
So is about terrorism, and that we are above the war, so we must ignore everything, because we are above the bad things, we must forget about those who died.
Question : Who did nothing to who?
Do we just have to ignore that people died, and to be proud that terrorist did nothing to us, yet? So we must keep living in ignorance.
I know english language, but I still can’t understand anything.

His style of performing has always been a little quirky/weird, which makes for an intimate performance of his sister’s song. That may have convinced more than enough voters to pick up their phones and vote for it.

If he was gravely ill, it would have been obvious but Salvador was at his performance best during both the semis and the final.

I had my husband who barely endures ESC coming out of the bedroom thinking it was an interwall act and a good one in that during the semifinal. That’s how captivating it was. And I think it made many casual viewers who usually do not vote to pick up the phone.

This was my favorite to win Sanremo. I don’t think there was a song there this year I could tell would do well in ESC, like there were last year. Not even “Frida”, because that should have been cut drastically (studio version plays well over 4 minutes), and I feel the chorus was too on your face for juries. I’m not going to guess how Europe will take this, but I think this has a couple of things going for it. First, Italians seem to have hard time staging a more “coreographic” ESC entries. The news of his heart problems did not come from his family themselves nor his management during the run-up to the contest proper. They cited “health-related reasons” for him to miss out on the first round of rehearsals (which only require him to stand inside the stage island) , but never the specifics until months after the contest when Salvador decided to undergo surgery. Media outlets invaded his family’s privacy, having the audacity of making public about his heart condition without the decency of contacting them about doing so. Sorry but after years of qualitative songs , this song is a let down for me. Yes it may have some good intentions/meanings but i can not connect with the song as in “Mercy”. It’s a little bit confusing and tiring along with sometimes loud vocals. It’s busy a lot and for a foreigner in Europe it is hard to catch the concept where as in mercy even though you can not understand the story ,the way they present it, “kindness” concept conveyed through the word “mercy” ,makes me connect with song strongly . “You didn’t do nothing to me” are the words of a husband who lost his wife and mother of his 17° month boy in France. This song means that we won’t let them scare us. It’s a hug to Europe. The televote system in Sanremo is grossly unfair. Some songs get hours of voting time and some literally get nothing. They need to open the televote in the end of the performances like most of the world does.

The televote just in the first day opened at the beginning of the song and closed at the end of the song. No song had hours to be voted. The meaning is that you cannot vote a singer just beacause you like, without listening his/her song first.

What about NOT translating it into English?
Do a quick count of how many people communicate naturally in English… It still CAN be translated by anyone who cares to do so, but hey English is not the centre of the universe.
As to “accent training”, that is just another horrible thing to say. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not criticising you in particular; but I’ve read too many times people commenting on singers’ pronunciation. Know what? At least they ARE TRYING.

Well when you’re dealing with an international contest, an international language maximizes the chances of the song being understood by more people. And having a good enough pronunciation helps even further. Of course the other route is relying on the specific tv commenters to explain the text briefly in less than 10 seconds before it’s being sung.

A song need not to be translated or sung in another language in order to be understood by many. The odds of songs undergoing such changes getting lost in translation is quite high, most especially to those that were written with just one language in mind. One may argue that we’ve had songs that have had multiple versions in different languages such as L’essenziale (La incomparable), Quedate conmigo (Stay With Me), Tu te reconoceras (Te reconoceras, Wonderful Dream), J’ai cherche (Looking, Yo busque), etcetera. But most of the time, versions of the original require completely new lyrics in the new… Read more »

They won the televote in Italy on a first impact. You don’t need a few listens to feel something with their performance.

Meta/Moro: what a great combination of voices, what a great song! Thank you. My daughter, 10, who doesn’t understand italian, is so moved from the song and the video – it’s keeping it in replay. It is a great moment for Albanian people, having three Albanians singing at the Eurovision. It would blow their selfrespect, after being labelled for years as criminals (not only in Italy of Ermal, and Greece of Eleni), and as being not worthy. It is also great that, at least, Meta/Moro and Eugen Bushpepa (Eleni has not published her song yet) are bringing good songs to… Read more »

The only Albanians that are complexed by that stereotype are the ones that are too sensitive to labels. Obviously the only people who would place such labels would be close minded and uneducated individuals whose opinion can be safely zeroed since they’re not worth doing business with. So the responsibility for feeling inferior still falls on whoever is choosing to feel inferior or to listen to sweeping stereotypes by people that don’t ultimately matter. Ermal can’t magically change that just for being Albanian and winning a song contest. That’s his talent that’s getting rewarded, not his whole nationality. Every individual… Read more »

The prejudices are made not only by individuals (this as well) but from the structures (media/state). Without this structured prejudices we wouldn’t have had wars and neither concepts like “first hand” countries/development countries, or racism.

Fortunately/unfortunately, examples like this of Ermal facilitate the acceptance of many hard working and talented Albanian emigrants (you can replace Albanian with any other nationality) in their host societies. Thanks also to Ermal the Albanian emigrants in Italy and Greece (specially here) will not need to hide their identity and change their names.

So again, who is docile and stupid enough to let their perceptions be molded by state and media? Oh that’s right, people who are not worth doing business with. If a person is as damaged as to link all Albanians to the ones who are part of the criminal enterprise, I sincerely doubt that Ermal winning Sanremo will cure the root of their critical thinking problems. I’ll just say thanks, but no thanks! This is my least favourite Italian entry since their come back. Maybe because I came to expect so much from them… L’Essenziale, La mia citta, Grande amore, No Degree of Separation, Occidentali’s Karma (in no particular order, though L’essenziale is clearly my favourite, I adore that song!) and now this? Italy has been my favourite Eurovision country since 2013, and this year is no exception. I don’t know if anyone in Italy is reading this, but please keep sending these amazing songs to Eurovision, even when you don’t really do well (well, as a Finn I think 6th place is just fine). Your songs are always so different and usually carry great messages, and while they are not really Eurovision winner material, they are simply amazing. I hate that countries usually only think about winning, when Eurovision is much more than just a competition.

There are laws in the UK against certain types of speech (racism, homophobia etc.) and Wiwibloggs has to moderate such things or risk being shut down. However, there are no laws against criticising music. (Opens debate)

I think most Eurovision fans should understand that the point of the contest is to “come together” through music, and not use it for conflict. At least, I hope so.

Just because it’s not easy doesn’t mean it doesn’t have to be done. Plenty of sites have rules and effective moderation. There is a reason Wiwibloggs’ comment section has a bad reputation among eurofans. Also a blog is not a democracy, they don’t have to follow government laws on free speech. Their priority should be keeping a healthy site with plenty of space for all kinds of opinions but zero tolerance for trolling and disrespect.

Great song and very emotive, heartfelt performance. I doubt they will do very well in May though. In the verses there is extensive reciting in italian (that may be reduced after the song is cut down to 3 minutes) and I don’t think it’s instant enough. Bonjour Lisboa, Ciao San Remo,

Italy brings it, as usual. Truth be told, I wasn’t really following Sanremo (so many NFs, so little time), although it’s probably the most historically important (it begat Eurovision itself), but I like this song a lot. People seem to forget that sixth place isn’t a bad place to finish at all, so I think Italy have a chance of either maintaining that or exceeding it greatly. Gonna be a good year, I can already tell. UK is just the worst by being nondescript but I like the performance (and performer) a lot. Not a bad song in the lot so far.

I’m so sorry for Paddy, the Lo Stato Sociale dancer. I hope another country will take her, to become famous like the epic sax guy.
When will Wiwibloggs start the poll? If that poll doesn’t start, I will think is still hope for Lo Stato Sociale.
