As of Sunday the 11th of February we have heard 9 of the 43 competing entries for Eurovision 2018, as well as an abundance of national finalists which have Eurovision fans the world over quaking in their boots. With the fandom comes hype, and with hype comes the bookies. Bookmakers all over Europe are piecing together their early favourites to win Eurovision 2018 as fans throw their cash behind some big names in the hopes of some financial gain come May. A dollar makes us holla (and euros and pounds, too).

Bulgaria has emerged as the overall early favourite with the bookies, with some agencies offering odds as low as 15/2 despite the fact the country has not revealed their participating artist/s and their song yet. Bulgarian broadcaster BNT confirmed that their entry is “risky”, so once the big reveal happens, it will be interesting to see how the public reacts. (A number of us evaluated the shortlist and can attest to the risks they are taking). We can’t wait to see how this turns out!

Moving from the Balkans to the Baltics, and niggling at the toes of Bulgaria, is Estonia, with odds as low as 7/1. Estonia haven’t had the greatest track record in the past couple of years, but the popularity of Eesti Laul 2018 finalist Elina Nechayeva and her song “La Forza” is pushing them higher. This dramatic opera entry, complete with an Aliona Moon-esque projective skirt, is giving the fandom life. O Mie, oh my! Tallinn 2019, anyone?

Sitting comfortably in third place is Sweden. Only two heats into Melodifestivalen 2018, we can only assume the reason for their strong odds – their lowest being 7/1 – is due to how successful Sweden are at Eurovision generally. Since their non-qualification in 2010, they’ve only placed outside of the top five once in 2013 and have won the competition twice. It’s no secret that Sweden are a force to be reckoned with.

Rounding out the top five are Sara Aalto from Finland and Jessica Mauboy from Australia. Finland, with odds as low as 8/1, have seen their odds shortened drastically since the release of their first song for UMK 2018, “Monsters”, which has received high praise from the Eurovision community. Sitting comfortably in fifth place, Australia are currently seeing odds as low as 10/1 thanks to a great track record since their debut in 2015. Jessica Mauboy is a seasoned performer who has already performed on a Eurovision stage. Will this be advantageous for Australia at Eurovision 2018?

And completing the top ten are Sennek from BelgiumMikolas Josef from the Czech RepublicAlfred and Amaia from SpainArmenia and Aisel from Azerbaijan.

50-1 odds on Portugal re-claiming the title. Is that not tempting anyone?

More realistically at the moment, go for Finland, Finland and oh, Finland. Probably with a mash-up of the three songs. 😛

Lastly, San Marino are at much better quality than in previous years. So a 100-1 bet might tempt some fans.

The rest of the bets look boringly predictable.

The truth is that last year if anyone bet on Portugal at this point in time (which I very much doubt) he or she would have done a ton of money… Who knows for this year, right?

Bulgaria really wants to win and is trying to do the best and i hope they do it, becouse Portugal artist doesnt care about winning Eurovision, (so i dont know why are they participating) but bulgarian artist and BNT and bulgarian people will be really happy if they win!

Am I missing something? Did Bulgaria release a song? How are you selecting a front-runner without having heard their song choice yet. It’s been a wind-up for Bulgaria in the recent years and they are definitely due a 1st place, but the stars have to align for that to happen and the song has to be quality

Estonia is Only number 1 due to IL Volo effect. Opera never works in ESC. Most of those who competed turned out to be fanwanks; nothing else. Hyped up by fans, beloved by none. Estonia hasn’t had a great track record either lately. Sending songs that turned out to be fanwanks, nothing more. Like in 2016 and 2017. Doubt very much it will be number 1 come May

A near-certainty to be in the Top Ten (and let’s be honest, it’s likely, because it’s Russia) is quite different from the odds of being the Winner. For example, from the moment it released, Yodel It! was almost certain to be Top Ten last year, but the odds of it Winning were always very long, given the Juries. Same with Samoylova. Samoylova is going to be given a solid package, and her limitations as a singer and performer will be covered with as much heartwarming wholesomeness as can be poured into it … but let’s be honest about the reality… Read more »

What I’ll say is that I’d be delighted if Estonia won the thing…buuuuuttt we haven’t heard a lot of other songs, plus all that stuff dependent on La Forza going to Lisbon that I mentioned in another thread. In short: first it needs to win the nationals, then it needs to be tinkered with and staged and whatnot before the contest – if it wins the national final, then there’s the matter of the other songs both in Estonia’s semi-final and in the contest as a whole, thirty-four of which we either haven’t heard or haven’t been decided on yet,… Read more »

The relevant comparison would probably be Poland with Margaret two years ago. Bookies favourite based on the assumption that she would win and then when Micha? Szpak won the selection, it almost instantly dropped down to 40/1. Again, you can’t count your chickens but bookmakers offer odds to alleviate losses. Estonia are favourites because bookies are afraid of what a potentially strong and well-supported entry that they may have. On the subject of leaving betting until later…yes, if you want to get a more accurate reflection of the landscape, then you should. But, bookies use this to their advantage, too… Read more »

I followed the bookies quite closely last year after March. And they changed dramatically, apart from the obvious initial contenders like Italy or Sweden. Bulgaria last year jumped suddenly from a middle place to top 5 and Portugal from bottom to middle and then top during April, whilst Australia descended to a middle position having started quite high. Indeed, their predictions were pretty close, but only more closely to the actual event. So it is too soon to make any conclusions from them just yet.

Sorry, but I don’t think so. It got to 4th position maybe two weeks or so after the FdC, where it stayed then for a long time. But during these two weeks it worked his way through from the middle positions. Also he got to the top only after SF1, which led to people speculating that he had won it, which indeed turned out to be true. Wiwi even made a piece on it.

I’m not surprised Spain is that high (actually it should be even higher since it has better numbers than Belgium and Czech Republic if you look closer) the song is beautiful and they are extremelly charming, they can do really well. In Spain bettings are illegal so this has nothing to do with Spanish overhyping it, is just a very competent entry.

Have to laugh at people saying odds don’t mean anything. The bookies are usually not that far off and last year (in particular), got the top ten pretty close. The bookies are not in the business of losing money. Having said that, the bookies tend not to follow Eurovision that close early on so you can get some really good odds, as a Eurovision fan, before countries actually pick their song. Estonia are already gone so if you missed that boat, too bad. You can, however, still get 30+/1 on Belarus and assuming that Alekseev wins, that could be great… Read more »

Sweden was on top among the bookies for about a month. I remember that Sweden sent an opera act in 2009 or 2007. It had a huge success, but ranked lower than Sweden normally does. So, I don’t see Estonia winning with this opera act. Finland is so strong this year. Russia may find a killer song. Azerbaijan and Armenia have good potential (we already know that Armenia has some good songs). Belgium might top off guard. I guess Bulgaria might do quite well. Having said that, as for this moment, I see only Finland as winning material.

um.. sir, I don’t really think that Armenia has ANY chance to win the contest this year. OK, they have some songs (like Qami) that can give them a Top 10 result, but that’s just it. The most of the songs in Depi Evratesil are rather uninteresting or dated or cliché. I couldn’t find anything special there. It’s just Qami which’s good because of the singer’s strong vocals I think. On the other hand I expect something big from the countries like Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, Australia, Belgium, The Netherlands, Israel and of course Finland. “Monsters” is very good and it’s just… Read more »

But the contest has changed over the years as we see and I don’t really think that this type of entries can do well nowadays. “Fly with me” was much better and the staging, the vocals, everything was on point, but they all they got was 18th. That just seems unrealistic Tamar doing better than Artsvik. As you said their only hope is Qami for Top… Read more »

No country has sent a straight up opera entry, La Voix was popera and it was very tacky, same with Grande Amore and It’s My Life. The reason why they didn’t win was because of popera being cheesy and tacky. La Forza is both catchy and mezmerising and juries will die over it because Elina shows masterclass vocals and unique staging.

Well…it all depends on the songs. Once the last song is selected, we will be able to compare them and pick our own winner…for example, for me, French song is ok, but had they sent Louka or Nassi, they would have received 20 votes from me. Now they will get null. At least, so far I haven’t seen anything authentic which may become a worldwide hit song. So, at least 15 countries are ready claim the trophy atm. The top 10 has some obvious countries like Sweden, Australia as well as Armenia and Azerbaijan.

I couldn’t imagine a couple of years ago that Czech Republic would be in the top 10 in the betting odds. But their song this year is really good, so deserved.

Bulgaria and Belgium follow the success of the previous years and Finland has a great performer with the first song released to be already a favourite.

The surprise for me is Estonia and Spain being so high.

Hopefully, Italy and France are close to the top 10 though I expected France higher.

They’ll need televoting points similar to Poland 2016 to achieve top 10. They’re usually bottom or close to bottom with televote and the outdated trumpet sound will get them mid-table with televote and a low jury score there is a solid chance it won’t even qualify, it’s usually middle of people’s rankings at the moment and the revealed songs are incredibly weak. If it can barely stand out in these weak songs then it has no chance once the heavy hitters are announced

Sweden is not going to finish in the top 5. Their songs are too weak. If they do, it will be because of jury hype. Bulgaria might, we don’t know the song. Estonia will qualify with La Forza, there is no way that the jury will let this slip through, plus the staging will give it a push as well. Regarding Spain, I don’t ever remember Barei or Edurne being in the top 10. At best, they were around 16th or so, so this is not simply Eurofan hype. I don’t know how you can so confidently talk about how… Read more »

As for Sweden, If I Was Sorry was incredibly weak yet still got top 5, I do think public opinion is slipping for Sweden but jury will continue eating them high as long as they keep writing everyone else’s songs. Estonia is a likely qualifier but it’s momentum will slow down like it did with Italy but I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up like Verona Portugal was a multi-generational song and was built on emotion and atmosphere and even though I didn’t like I could see it’s merit, Czechia has a vapid pop song and won’t catch the… Read more »

I mean, Anne-Marie David sang for France after singing for Luxembourg, and that made sense, bc she’s actually French. If Rybak sang for Belarus, I’d get it. But Bulgaria doesn’t have a tie to any winner, and honestly, I don’t think they have anyone worth sending back for another try (Kristian should be happy with his second place and Poli with her fourth – one more for each would feel unnecessary. Plus, they sent back the “Water” duo and look… Read more »
