Eurovision 2018 favourites

You know Eurovision season is hotting up when there are nine selection shows on a single Saturday night! And while most were just heats, we did have two finals. This weekend, Italy and Denmark selected their acts for Lisbon 2018.

This brings the total number of confirmed entries to nine. And, as always, it’s time to vote for your favourite.

You can listen to both new entries and watch our video reaction below. Then vote in our poll. Choose wisely, you can only vote ONE time. Voting ends at 23:59 CET on Thursday 15 January — just ahead of the Belarusian selection on Friday and Montenegro’s on Saturday.

We will then relaunch the poll to include both winners along with any other songs which might drop in the interim.

Denmark: Rasmussen “Higher Ground”

Despite DMGP boasting names such as 1990s darling Sannie (aka Whigfield) and regular fan favourite Ditte Marie, Denmark opted to go with Rasmussen on Saturday. And convincingly so. The bearded red-head won the superfinal with 50% of the vote. “Higher Ground” is a soaring Scandi-ballad while the fantasy-style staging has been compared to the vikings and Game Of Thrones. However, while clearly popular on home soil, the number has proven to be rather divisive with international Eurovision followers. Will Rasmussen be able to win them over in May?

Italy: Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro “Non mi avete fatto niente”

Saturday also saw Italy’s week long Sanremo festival draw to a close. Here victory went to last year’s runner-up Ermal Meta along with Fabrizio Moro. “Non mi avete fatto niente” was popular with viewers at home scooping more than half the televotes. But the entry has already caused controversy. Earlier in the contest, a debate arose as to whether the song could be considered “new”. Organisers deemed that no rules were broken and no action was taken. But will the allegations hamper the duo later as Eurovision season progresses?

This year will be FULL of political songs, disguised as ”humanist” songs. France and Italy are only the beginning.

France is disguised indeed and, besides, overhyped, Italy is quite straightforward and sounds much more sincere. Politics in songs should be allowed either to everybody or nobody.

Seriously, the spanish subject is getting really annoying. Even if it will be a good idea to block the possibility of voting your country in this kind of polls, this is just a poll THAT’S ALL. Stop creating hate about spanish fans, some of them don’t deserve it and of course de singers don’t deserve any kind of hate.

La canzone Italiana non è un plagio, non è una copia, tutto è stato chiarito.
Se poi volete eliminare una bella canzone per far vincere un’altra nazione questo è un altro discorso.Provo a tradurre in inglese.
The Italian song is not a plagiarism, it is not a copy, everything has been clarified. If you want to eliminate a good song to win another nation, this is another matter. I try to translate it into English.

He actually won the televote as well. Although televote was more close than the jury vote. DR published the results yesterday: https://www.dr.dk/event/melodigrandprix/nu-afsloerer-dr-fordelingen-saadan-stemte-seere-og-jury-til-grand-prix-finalen

I was a huge fan of Occidentali’s Karma last year and find this year’s song a bit ordinary by comparison, however I wish it well. Does anyone else get the similarity between the music in the verses of this year’s entry and that in the verses of Francesco Gabbani’s summer hit Tra le Granite E le Granate. Even though the tempo is different I think they are very similar…

Well I think Italy is overrated in this poll. First, we still dont know if the song is confirmed for Eurovision and second, if this song goes to Lisbon, i see Italy have a France 2015 fate. The 2 songs talked about violence (war/terrorism) and were wonderful but flopped because of the topic

Spain haters are way more annoying than spanish eurofans, who are totally entitled to support their entry. Funny thing is, I totally see Spain doing very well this year; the song might be cheesy, but in a cheesy way that people like (Rusia 2013 and 2015 come to my mind). They just need to fix the clothes and get rid of the pianos.
