The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — travelled to Iceland to review the acts of Söngvakeppnin 2018. Up next is Rakel Pálsdóttir performing “My Wish“. Was this a Wiwi wish come true? Read on to find out!

Rakel Pálsdóttir – “My Wish”

“My Wish” reviews

Jonathan: “My Wish” is a lovely, sweet little number and Rakel has a beautiful voice. The lyrics are additionally heart-warming and compliment the song’s soft touch. However, sweet can only get you so far. The song does get rather repetitive and after you’ve heard a verse and chorus you’ve heard it all. Overall, it feels too much like a children’s lullaby rather than a competitive Eurovision entry.

Score: 5.5/10

Aline: Rakel’s voice is really nice to listen to and makes me almost dream away. However, the only thing I love about this song is the melody. The lyrics feel so overused that it doesn’t grab my interest anymore and they feel so empty because of that. A fairytale staging would fit well here as I can imagine this song in a Disney movie.

Score: 4/10

Barnabas: Cuteness and gentleness are taken to new dimensions here, the guitar and strings work very well together, and just leave me being unable to say more but that even though “My Wish” probably won’t win the competition, it will touch many hearts.

Score: 7.5/10

Chris: Good news, y’all: another Disney-esque ballad! Iceland has been here, done that on so many occasions before, and they’ve never worked. What’s worse is that “My Wish” is even more saccharine than all those that have come before it. In fact, one word sums this up: boring.

Score: 3/10

Luis: My wish is that whoever picks the Söngvakeppnin entries didn’t have horchata in his or her veins. Rakel has a beautiful sweet voice, and the song kinda creates a cosy mood. It grazes the line that separates church music from country-pop, and I’m not sure on which side it falls. This is languidly lovely, if that makes any sense.

Score: 5/10

Natalie: My wish has always been that someone will bring Eurovision to Reykjavik. Could Rakel be that person? This is such a sweet song, and everything comes together really nicely to make something really special. It’s tender, light, beautiful music and incredibly touching. I just doubt very much it would work on a Saturday night, but I’ve been surprised before. This is heart-meltingly nice stuff, and I would love to see it do well.

Score: 7/10

I feel like with the right staging, this could do better than what most people think. I know that it probably won’t win, but it’s my favourite from the Icelandic selection.

It’s good for a lullaby. If this wins, I will be asleep in the 1st minute.

It’s more effective than a horse tranquilizer to put you to sleep.

My wish is for Iceland to become a real contender again. Scratch that. The way things are now, my wish is for Iceland to have ONE decent song next year.

This is my personal favorite of Songvakeppnin 2018. It’s very heartfelt and sweet, and comes off as very honest. It’s obvious it hasn’t been written with Eurovision in mind as a primary goal. It’s like a Christmas song, filled with feelings of tenderness. It’s not a threat for the ESC win, it probably wouldn’t even qualify. Still, it makes me happy to know it’s there.

This song is great for lullaby, but I don’t want to fall asleep during when watching Eurovision…
