Hungary’s national final A Dal 2018 continued tonight, with the final four acts qualifying for the grand final. AWS, yesyes, Viktor Király and Tamás Horváth will progress to the grand final next week.

The first three qualifiers were determined by a combination of televote and an expert jury made up of actress Judit Schell, Magna Cum Laude lead singer Misi Mezo, award-winning musician Miklós Both and the music legend Károly Frenreisz.

The winner of this vote was metal band AWS, whose scorching hot song “Viszlát nyár” earned 46 points. It was a big favourite with the jury, earning 39 out of 40 points.

Next was electronic duo yesyes. Their song  “I Let You Run Away” — which features an electronic accordion — earned 45 points. Following in third place was The Voice USA star Viktor Király, whose entry “Budapest Girl” earned 42 points.

The fourth qualifier was selected by a second round of public voting. The public did not agree with the results of the first round — the fourth spot went to Tamás Horváth who had previously placed fifth in the first round with the song “Meggyfa”. But it’s no surprise he won the public wildcard. “Meggyfa” is a fan favourite and it topped the televote in the first round. The jury, however, was less enthusiastic.

A Dal 2018 – semi-final 2 qualifiers

  1. AWS – “Viszlát nyár” (46 points)
  2. yesyes – “I Let You Run Away” (45 points)
  3. Viktor Király – “Budapest Girl” (42 points)

If we are going to send a rock band, I would rather have Leander than AWS. I don’t know which of them would do better at the eurovision, but Leander Kills is just more classy and smoother, and their song carries a message at least. For me, AWS is just a… heavy noise with screaming. The lyrics goes nowhere, not to mention “singing” “Goodbye, Summer” in February and May… a 3 minutes flash of energy, nothing more. I’m surprised Tamás Horváth got through only with the public votes. He probably won’t make the final 4 now, the jury will crash… Read more »

The song of AWS is about the last thoughts of a dying person, more specifically the singer’s dad. He sings “goodbye summer, you are late, you lied that you would be mine but you didn’t come” – I think this is really touching, knowing the back story, and now you know that it also has a message, a better one than the government-friendly Leander 😉

Well, I didn’t know the background story of AWS’s song. Now it makes sense, but I think it’s still never good when a song/lyrics needs explaination.
And let’s not involve politics. Leander’s song doesn’t contain any political message. His song is about loving his homeland, he belongs to his homeland, etc. It can be anyones song from the world with the same views as him, because it doesn’t even mention the name of Hungary. They won’t win anyway. The jury tried to crash them in the second round, and they will do it again in the final.

OMG YASYAS IS THROUGH!!!! I am sooo happy. I think Hungary should send him, but Meggyfa is also a good choice. I hope they make the right choice.

This is surprisingly unsuprising if you know what I mean. 😀
Glad Tamas Horvath didn’t ad-lib over the violin parts, but his staging still doesn’t look very good. On the other hand, I’m surprised that AWS got only 7 points from the televote.
I like “I Let You Run Away”, but they still need to sort out the backing vocalists’ issue (and that ugly background).
Also, only 4 televote points for Eletre Kel? That’s deserved, but it’s literally the fewest points ever given by the audience in the history of A Dal haha.

Audience points hit a record low tonight, and my guess is that there was less people watching tonight. Besides, it wasn’t just one 4 score: there were TWO.

Hungary has a great final and another top 10 on Eurovision would be super deserved. There are so many good options for them. I like AWS, Gergely, Leander Kills, Tamás and yesyes.

I don’t know how they didn’t win the televote and it bothers me.

There isn’t one single female contestant in Hungary’s final… I get it that their music industry is heavily male-based but come on.

All women’s Songs were crap tho, except for ”Crack my xode”, but that wasn’t final worthy either.

I listened to all the songs and the only decent one is I Let You Run Away. I hope neither of those two rock songs win, to the public it’ll look like they’re freaking out.

If that’s the only decent song in your opinion, I have to say, that you’re officially the weirdest human being on this blog. That’s not an Insult, I just find it really interesting how different your taste is sometimes. It’s almost impossible to predict which Songs you’re gonna like and the other way around…

They were all terrible! It’s not our d*cks’ fault if female singers made little to no effort to qualify to the final in A Dal this year. Besides, I think there were no memorable female entries in Hungary this year. Gender quotas? No thanks!

Of course not, but that’s still odd no girls in Hungary were good enough. I guess it’s because A dal only accepts experienced acts, and most of the Hungarian music industry is made up from men. I’d still rather have a girl on stage than one of those rockers who look like they’re having a seizure.

Seizure? That is how a song of that nature must be performed. The song is full or rage, boarding catharsis, and you expect it to be sung standing still with no movement? Body language is almost as important as vocals when performing.

My two favourites from Hungarian final are Leander Kills and Tamás Horváth, but considering how the jury was treating them in the semifinals – sadly I don’t think they got a chance to win 🙁

I bet you don’t even know that growling is a very difficult singing technique that can damage your vocal chords if not done appropiately.

Tamás Horváth won’t be even allowed near the second round if the jury votes like tonight.

Daniel

Prepare for the bloodbath. All favorites are in! I don’t know why, but Tamás Horváth fans should beware of a big letdown. Tonight his jury scores were very low – actually, he qualifies to the final with the lowest jury score among all semifinalists (only 30), and the final’s first round is entirely decided by the jury. He was given A LOT of feedback tonight because the juries were far from impressed with him. I’d LOVE if Hungary sent AWS. In a year where the possibilities are very much open Hungary would benefit a lot if they sent something that… Read more »

Unfortunately, the jury looks like it is going to keep Tamas out of the final four. This is a shame as it is now clear that the top two in public voting are him and Yesyes.

As of now, based on jury voting, the final four would be AWS, Yesyes, Zsolt and Gergely. Only yesyes and Gergely got 8s from the public but as Yesyes were in a more difficult semi, I would make them favourites.

I wouldn’t say that… In the round before AWS got 9 Points, they might be a contender too.

Specially if Leander Kills is not counted among the final 4. AWS will absorb the votes from both fanbases and supporters.

PERFECT. I know it’s probably gonna be ”I let you run away” or ”Meggyfa” (which would be alright, these are both great Songs!) but I’m still rooting for AWS. We need them at Eurovision.

I doubt “Meggyfa” will even make it to the second round. Its jury scores were tied for the lowest tonight (only 30).
