Barbi Escobar served Swedish swagger as her backing dancers performed squats. The bookies’ once favourite Dotter struck shapes before a single spotlight. And Kalle Moraeus & Orsa Spelmän led a folk revival, replete with ageing gents on violins and traditional dance. And in the end none of them survived Semi-Final 3 of Melodifestivalen 2018 in Malmö.

Instead Martin Almgren (“Bittersweet Lullaby”) and Jessica Andersson (“Party Voice”) advanced direct to the final, while Moncho (“Cuba Libre”) and Méndez (“Everyday”) live to sing another day…in Andra Chansen.

Direkt till final

Martin Almgren with “A Bitter Lullaby”

The Swedish Idol winner has a husky voice that’s somehow filled with light. This evening he was once again note perfect with his guitar-led number, which, despite its dark title, is somehow uplifting and moving. Visually he kept things simple, slipping into a flowing green kaftan which he concealed beneath a grey duster coat. Golden lights flashed amid white strobes, and his deep, resonant voice worked rather well with the largely female backing. At times I felt like I was at a Christian music festival — and that’s not where I want to be on a Saturday evening — but you can’t fault the man’s conviction or voice.

Jessica Andersson with “Party Voice”

Jessica looked great, served attitude and embodied schlager queen….of yesteryear. Despite the decent attempt to give a modern take on the genre, this felt a bit more vintage than I would have liked. And while she sang of us hearing her party voice, all I really heard was a lot of backing. No matter. The woman can sing and the number was fun, even if a tad predictable.

Andra Chansen qualifiers

Moncho “Cuba Libre”

The title is Cuba Libre, but he could have been drinking pina coladas or Long Island Ice Teas as well. This was a blast of tropical sunshine, replete with (questionable) flowers in the backing dancers’ hair, messy conga lines and bold, bright colours. And while the performance was frenzied and chaotic, it was also a lot of fun — waking me up after the two acts that came before. Moncho’s voice and style worked well and his track deserves to be on a few summer playlists.

Méndez with “Everyday”

This started off slightly cringe, with Méndez playing the role of your best friend’s drunk dad at a BBQ. He seemed to slur his words and his invitations to dance seemed a bit much. But then the chorus hits and you realise that Méndez really does want you to have fun. A series of dancers with bright and billowing garments make an appearance and the fiesta properly begins. It’s more than a bit cliché — he uses the phrase mi corazon. But ultimately this is a proper ear worm that makes you want to move and, indeed, “live your life.” Well done!

Eliminated acts

5. Kalle Moraeus & Orsa Spelmän with “Min dröm”

A folk rocker accompanied by a trio of elderly men on violins, this was sweet, authentic and totally out of place. Perhaps reaching for the farmyard demographic, this was meant to celebrate Swedish tradition, but felt so forced that it almost seemed to mock it (see the low-grade B&Q floral arches). Wedding entertainment at best, this managed to bring the energy down another notch, something I didn’t think was possible.

6. Dotter with “Cry”

Perhaps the most artistic of any act this evening, Dotter brought stirring vocals with a piercing quality and a unique timbre. Her stage was dark and minimalist, featuring her silhouette against a largely black backdrop and a spotlight. She made shapes with her body, but also her voice – conveying some of the most sincere emotion of the evening. And boy did she work that hair! A quality entry deserving of more viewings — and a spot in another Melfest show. Alas, Sweden, alas…

7. Barbi Escobar with “Stark”

Barbi kept it casual for her performance, rocking up in what appeared to be her street clothes. Her all-black outfit contrasted with the all-red backing, creating a sultry, urban and somewhat mysterious vibe. Her army of dancers did plenty of squats — it looked a bit peculiar — and at times she seemed really out-of tune, like a cat in heat. The speaky-speaky sections came across as weak rap and the act, more generally, a hot mess.

I know it’s difficult because almost everyone are fangirling over Sweden every year, but this year NONE of the Songs so far is a top 5. Benjamin could be in top 10 if he wins ONLY because of the staging. Let’s see the semi final 4 but i am afraid that Sweden will forget the top 5 This year…

As much as I liked Cry I can’t even remember how it goes. But I remember Party Voice even though it is a lesser song . That can perhaps explain why Jessica made it through. It is an immediate song with a catchy hook. People generally vote for something they remember than a song that needs several listenings to stuck. Immediate songs have always made MF and ESC

Alex

My hypothesis with Dotter is that she reminded the public of Loreen, but with less deep vocals. I mean, she sang well and had her own showstopping vocal style, but the staging was very much familiar. And she was unknown, which didn’t help.

Either way, it is a real shame that songs 2 and 6 finished in 7th and 6th. Those were absolutely the best two performances and songs on the night. The rest were just mediocre and won’t go anywhere if they make it to ESC. Well, Song 1 was a bit above mediocre but the enunciation needs improvement.

For all Swedish real artists and especially for Dotter. Stay away from Melfest! It is not good for you! It will never value your artistic value unless you start producing some fast food music to make a quick buck. But if you want to have the ESC experience then apply to the National Finals of Estonia, Portugal or the SanRemo if you know how to sing in italian.

Also, song quality for the 3 semi-finals are average I guess?

Is it me or is David Lindgren’s hosting making Melfest laughable in a good way?

When people are saying this semi final is better than the 2 before, their live performance was total disappointment, and I think semi 2 is better, maybe just my own opinion. Only Martin sounded good live, all others are either backing vocals or really weak vocals. And the quality of this semi is so bad that the heart during the song rarely beats.

Watching this Melodifestivalen I can understand why Christer Björkman tried so hard to harm Madame Monsieur’s chances on Destination Eurovision… If it was a different country, I would fear that this is the selection of a country who could struggle to qualify to the final. But who am I kidding? They will make even if they send “Cuba Libre” or “Everyday” (please don’t!). William described perfectly: watching Martin made me feel in a Christian music festival. One thing is for sure: there are so many weak singers on this contest, that’s good to see someone with a big voice and… Read more »

Why do you think that he tried to downvote Madame Monsieur?
My first comment before he voted in the French NF was “MM can’t expect anything, he will vote for Lisandro and Max Cinnamon, because he always prefers young cute boys”, but then again, I was a little bitchy that evening because I thought the international juries would ruin the chances of my favourite… So I would be interested in what you meant with your comment…:-)

Well, it can goes different ways. I’ve always seem Christer as a very competitive guy and that’s one of the reasons Sweden has been so successful on Eurovision. So harming a song that he personally doesn’t like that much (based on his music taste overall) but he could see as a strong opponent would make sense. I think the use of an international jury can get very tricky when you invite someone who’s the boss on other country’s selection. Even if he wasn’t exactly doing that because he thought “Mercy” was a strong song, maybe he could had done that… Read more »

No, it wouldnt make sense because melfest doesnt have a powerful ballad. MM is more of a sad ballad than a generic pop song. It’d be way more risky if lisandro won.

Reply to  kitty

I don’t see “Mercy” as a ballad. For me, it’s something like electropop with an almost midtempo beat. But yes, there’s no song like this in Melodifestivalen. So you have a point, Lisandro’s song is on the same lane as most of what we see on Melodifestivalen. On the other hand, for a pop song, sometimes it’s easier to thrive between similar songs than fighting songs that are completely different. Because someone who’s inclined to vote to something like “Mercy”, “Amar pelos Dois” or “1944” won’t change their votes to “I Can’t Go On” no matter how good it performs.… Read more »

Nothing eletropop about it. It just has an uptempo beat, which delules you into thinking it’s ‘pop’. And i wouldnt be so sure about that. People that vote for 1944 or APD, have a very different taste. In fact, most people that voted were eurofans, people like William who listen to pop but can appreciate such musical beauty are proof of it. He could be being tactical, i dont agree, but who isnt? Well, let’s then agree to disagree on MM’s song genre and Björkman’s intentions. But I’m not naive at all and I agree that being tactical is a important thing in a competition. And that’s why I think France made a big mistake by inviting one of the big players of this game to intervene on their national selection. If someone was naive, then it was the french broadcaster.

Christer saw a massive threat to his country’s own chances in “Mercy” and gave it only 2 points in the Destination Eurovision final (despite giving it 8 in the semi) while handing Lisandro 12 (I never got the hype over that song “Eva” anyway) – that seems to be his M.O. whenever he’s asked to be on an international jury for another country. Thus why the people in the audience booed when that score came up

Thing with frans was that Melo 2016 had at least 5 more acts that could’ve done just as well or even better. So people got upset another favourite didn’t win. Mr Björkman should look at that year as a reference of what a successful national selection should look like. This year apart from “Dance you off” there isn’t a single proposition as polished as any of the 2016 finalists.

As for the selection, this years Melodifestival has been a catastrophy, I feel that there are too many songs that are too alike some famous songs, like the drop in Renaida’s song, or Margaret’s song as well as Mendez which reminded a lot of Despacito. Haven’t you guys learned nothing from Loreen’s situation last year? Swedes are not into dark themed entries (staging, music, lyrics…). I really did not think Dotter would flop that badly, but she is not a strong finalist, especially for Melodifestivalen.
When it comes to the finalists, true, their songs seem outdated, but I’d rather have Martin’s inspirational anthem and Jessica’s ABBA-esque number in the final, than bad Swedish attempts for recreations of “Under the Sea” (Moncho) or “Despacito” (Mendez).

True, we shouldn’t be destroying our brains trying to find out why Dotter got last. Just move on, and look what’s next for Melodifestivalen.

P.S. Swedes don’t enjoy any dark themed entries? Really? I’m curious since they gave their 12 televote points to Belgium and Blanche’s indie and dark themed modern pop (which was my favorite). Is it really like that in Sweden?

Melfest and ESC draw different audiences I’d say. Melfest has A LOT of younger fans who probably don’t understand the darker more serious entries and rather vote for something fun, hence why Moncho went to the second chance and Dotter came 6th.

I can’t speak for all Swedes, but most Swedes voted for Blanche because the song had been played a lot on Swedish radio stations, so naturally lots of people recognized it. Also it was quite a likeable pop song with lyrics you could remember easily, which probably made a lot of people vote for it. In Eurovision it’s easier for a country to get a high position in voting if you have a song that people are able to like and remember first time you listen to it, rather than a song that needs to “grow” before you like it… Read more »

Martin’s was a great song and Jessica reminded me of Hero by Charlotte Pirelli so I’m happy!

Bit gutted for Dotter

Yeah, Martin deserved it on his vocals alone. His song was okay, but the guys an amazing singer, so props to him.

Ok
This semi is bad
I mean the only people who ended up where I wanted them to were K&O and Martin
Jessica is a little bit overrated, but it’s okay
Barbi was way too underrated. I mean her staging was good except for… her, but the song deserved at least AC
Dotter didn’t sing that good, but after what Belarus did, they could just choose her internally and buy sim cards to cover the whole Europe and win esc
I just hope people will forget Mendez and Moncho tomorrow

There wasn’t a melfest winner in this semi final anyways, the people voted for what they thought was fun and upbeat instead of something artsy and boring, this isn’t really anything new, see Loreen last year,… Read more »

Im so happy for Jessica, I think she is my fav so far actually.. I gave her and Martin Almgren (who won me over tonight) 5 votes. I didnt enjoy Mendez and Dotter that much.. Everyday is a good song but Mendez cant sing at all..
My biggest chock was Moncho to AC, he should have been last..
