Anna Odobescu

The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to review the qualifying acts from Moldova’s O melodie pentru Europa 2018. Next we listen to Anna Odobescu‘s jazzy entry “Agony” and to Bella Luna‘s ballad “Moments”. Were we dying in agony or did we live this moment?

Anna Odobescu – “Agony”

Antranig: This song is rightfully titled “Agony” because that’s what it makes me feel. She wants to be your summer, winter, autumn and spring. I feel like this song should be sped up, put to a catchy jingle and used to taught kindergarteners about the four seasons. There’s nothing that could save this song as a Eurovision entry.

Score: 1.5/10

Bogdan: This song was written by Valeria Pasa’s father and it shows. It’s in that same vein of an ’80s power ballad meant for a big female voice. I wonder why Valeria Pasa passed on “Agony”? Maybe she heard that DoReDos were competing? Oh, and to top it all off, the electric guitar ads one more layer of dust over this tired song.

Score: 2.5/10

Kristin: Wow, this was agony indeed and probably the longest three minutes ever. This was probably supposed to be an intense and dramatic power ballad but its totally lacking both drama and power. It’s just screaming. But Anna gets kudos, because she sure makes one believe she is in agony.. agony over this poor song choice of hers.

Score: 3/10

Luis: “Agony” is the most suitable title for this. Some general advice would be that long raspy notes don’t equal dramatic. This lacks texture, goes nowhere, there’s nothing remarkable about it other than beginning a song with “you’re my summer, autumn, winter and spring”. And that, of course, is not a good sign.

Score: 3/10

Robyn: Anna Odobescu is from the school of thought that believes less is definitely not more. This results in her wringing out every note, giving us the seasons rendered as summaaaar, autuuuuumn, wintaaaaar (and spring). The overwrought, in-your-face vocals make the song difficult to enjoy. Shadows and light, y’all.

Score: 2.5/10

WIWI JURY VERDICT: 3.81/10

Bella Luna – “Moments”

Antranig: Here’s your typical dismal O melodie pentru Europa duet. The worst part is that it’s worse than the other awful O melodie pentru Europa duets. The Moldovan selection is filled with many entries like this that are a waste of time and yet they are able to produce some amazing Eurovision entries from this competition. The only moment I’m looking forward to is the one when this stops playing.

Score: 2.5/10

Bogdan: I’ve been trying to find out more about this duet, but nothing is to be found online. Maybe the two singers want to fade into obscurity, together with their song? I can’t say that I blame them, because “Moments” is so predictable, so uneventful and so unemotional, that I wouldn’t personally want to be associated with it.

Score: 2/10

Kristin: Does anybody remember Moldova’s 2008 entry “Century of Love”? No? Well, this is it, except with two people instead of one, and hopefully no teddy bear this time. This is going nowhere, although the good intentions are clearly there. Like they fail to understand basically everything in the song, I fail to understand why this song even made it to O melodie.

Score: 3/10

Luis: This is a moment I don’t want to relive. Bella Luna’s duet is just dreadful, lame, boring and uninteresting. It feels as a song two people would sing to each other to celebrate their 25th anniversary, and these two don’t look that old. It’s the closest thing to one of the most horrible and irritating entries in the history of Eurovision: Malta 2004.

Score: 2/10

Robyn: Parts of this song work and sometimes it sounds like it’s going to be massive. But it keeps coming back of that lazy 1980s-style ballad that never goes anywhere. There’s even a super awkward key change that sounds more like a random mashing of the keyboard than a structured chord progression. It’s just not working.

Score: 3.5/10

Agony – Very one note and forgettable. Too bad that Anna was one of the rare ones to actually deliver in live. 4/10

Moments – It was kind of sad watching him alone singing for a duet. Even as a duet, it’s quite pedestrian. 3.5/10
