Last year, rumours suggested that Azerbaijan songstress AISEL would be working with the so-called “Dream Team” on her entry for Eurovision 2018. Now the rumours have been confirmed. Russian maestro Philipp Kirkorov and Greek composer Dimitris Kontopoulos are now confirmed as being behind AISEL’s song for Lisbon.

Last year, Kirkorov told media that he had been approached by a country friendly to Russia and had agreed to produce their entry for Lisbon. He later teased fans with an Instagram post promising a “miracle adventure” with Kontopoulos.

Some fans ruled out Azerbaijan as a potential partner, as the elegant style of AISEL seemed at odds with the bold pop traditions of the “Dream Team”. However, AISEL was soon photographed with Kirkorov at social events and had nothing but praise for the Eurovision icon.

Now Azeri media has confirmed that Kirkorov and Kontopoulos will indeed be working on Azerbaijan’s entry for Eurovision 2018.

Another confirmed member of the “Dream Team” is creative director Ilias Kokotos. He was part of the team’s most recent Eurovision collaboration — Sergey Lazarev‘s 2016 entry “You Are the Only One”.

This won’t be the first time that a “Dream Team” member has worked with Azerbaijan. In 2013, Kontopoulos co-wrote Azerbaijan’s entry “Hold Me”, which placed second in Malmö.

Azeri media has also reported that the song will contain Azeri lyrics, which would be the first appearance of the Azeri language since Azerbaijan debuted at Eurovision in 2008. However, sources close to the Dream Team tell wiwibloggs that the Eurovision entry will not contain any Azeri lyrics.

The music video for AISEL’s song is currently being filmed in Greece. The song is expected to be released in coming weeks.

What do you think? Are you excited that the Dream Team is working with AISEL? Is using Azeri lyrics a smart move? Share your thoughts below!

For me Azerbaijan should not participate in Eurovision. It’s not only that the country is not a part of Europe but the most important is the fact that their people don’t even feel part of Europe. In every post about Azerbaijan you see Azeri people being obsessed about the song being in their language, being written by authors from their country , having ethic elements. It’s obvious the can’t get the concept of “Eurovision” so why are they taking part? No one reacted in Sweden with a Polish singer taking part in their selection , no one reacted in Balarus… Read more »

They don’t like azeris, so they are trying to bring ’em down with these type of comments like “Boo, they are buying from foreigners!” lol. And of course Azeris want local composers to write a song for Eurovision, that’s what all the nations want in Eurovision. Considering that the song has no Azerbaijani lyrics, it sounds like this entry will be crap. The “Dream Team” hasn’t sent a good song since 2008. And it’s so sad because Aisel is such a talented and versatile singer and they come back to a duo who’s last contribution was a lame and dated dance song with no hook. I would be happy if the song was at least partially in Azeri, like I had heard, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Well the “dream team” after 2008 had 3 entries :
2013 they came 2nd with “Hold me”
2014 they came 7th with “Shine”
2016 they won the televoting with “You are the only one”
So maybe it would be more correct for you to say “I didn’t like the songs they have send after 2008” because the results show that this is just your personal opinion with which the majority of the audience disagreed.
And having said that I must say that from those three entries I personally liked very much only “You are the only one”.

PLEASE Azerbaijan send a nice pop song in English.
After the victory of Ukraine and Portugal most countries are sending boring songs on their native language or songs with ethnic elements. Why?
No one will listen to these songs after the 13th of May. Exactly as it happened with the songs of Jamala and Salvador.
I would prefer having as many songs as “Euphoria” or as “Heroes” as possible.

What are the “ethnic elements” in the entries from Spain, France, Italy or even Albania? If sung in any other language, it would be impossible to say from what country they’re from. So, don’t be ridiculous! Only Serbia and Greece have what I’d call ethnic elements. In addition, “Heroes” must be one of the most banal and forgettable ESC winners ever, we don’t need more crap of that kind.

People who say Azerbaijani is not melodic or smth. While the Italian alphabet has six vowels in the Azeri one we have nine vowels I am not mentioning vowel sounds yet. Why vowels? Italian or Spanish are languages that we have been used more, since there are world hits, or at least European hits in those languages, while Azeri sounds weird.
Also, I don’t know if this youtube channel has the hits of the country but 90% of the songs didn’t have any ethnic elements, so I understand why you should send to Eurovision something like that.

This “dream team” is one of the biggest Eurovision nightmares, becoming more persistent and insipid than Ralph Siegel. Now, one should never judge before listening to the final product, but if history is any indication, it will be a complete and utter nightmare for my taste. In my opinion, Kirkorov has not written ONE half-decent, let alone heart-felt song for Eurovision. He’s just Mr. Money Bags with ridiculously over the top staging, especially when this Greek tragedy is also part of the team.

How’s ‘number one’ or ‘the only one’ in Azeri? 😉

The song will be partly in Azeri? Finally? OK, Azerbaijan, I forgive you turning to these cheesemasters, but I hope that Azeri part will be at least 50% of the song.

I read on a sister website that quoted INFE Azerbaijan said her song has not been finalized yet!!

Just saying: 13 of the entries we know of so far are either entirely or partially in the country’s native language (granted, four of those are English, but still, we also got some songs in Georgian, Albanian, Azerbaijani, Serbian, Italian, Greek, French, and Montenegrin. I’d also guess Portugal is gonna stay with Portuguese and Hungary usually sings in a native language as well).

Hungary is going for either 100% Hungarian or 100% English! So don’t just count them in

My body is ready for that beauty of Azeri language, bring that on!

It’s amazing how more countries send songs in their own languages this year. Thank you, Salvador. (:

2018 is getting more and more inclusive of national (or third, anyway) languages, so it doesn’t feel like Englishvision anymore! Awesome!

To sing in her native language? No more disgraceful than if I sent a song in English.

It already happened on their Eurovision debut back in 2008.

Normally I have reservations about Kirkorov (he and Bjorkman are the dynamic duo of Eurovision svengalis who didn’t impress much when they actually competed) but I’m thrilled that there’s some Azeri in this entry! First time Azerbaijan actually embraced their native language.

So happy to see so many countries coming back with their own languages this year. Really hope they’ll all do well in the final to encourage more and more countries to bringing their own languages in the coming years.

OMG! I’m so looking forward to this! Azerbaijan is one of my favourite Eurovision countries, they rarely disappoint me. I’m so happy the song will be bilingual this time. 😀

OMG! I’m really looking forward to listening to the song. The “dream team” has done a great job through the years!

I love the fact that it will be bilingual. More and more countries showcase their native language. It’s sad that we needed Salvador’s win to appreciate our own language and bring it on the Eurovision stage.

Can’t wait!

Wow we are going to listen again to some Turkic lyrics like Jamala did. So she won with crimean tatar which is a turkic language too.. and now Aisel with Azerbaijani language also a turkic language.. Good luck

I’m looking forward to hear the song. Yes, it will be an ethno ballad, and I also sow a snippet of Aisel working in the studio, where one could hear 4 seconds of the song.

Pretty sure that she will come with a bop, and hopefully won’t disappoint, but yay, a song partly in Azeri is already a huge step forward.

“Dream team” !!!
Really .. “you are the only one”
Is a terrible song that was only successful with it OTT staging ..
Cheesy lyrics and soulless junk ..
Also Demy “this is love” was equally terrible ..
It’s pure junk music with no substance .. type of garbage that brings Eurovision down every year !!
Seriously write a song with a story or some meaning .. bored of this crap now

To be fair to Khirkirov, he wasn’t involved in last year’s Greek tragedy.

But he and Dimitris tend to pull off the cheese well. I’m all for musical integrity but it’s nice to have a few guilty pleasure pop songs. Although like with last year, Azerbaijan’s choice of a more artistically credible singer means that like Skeletons, this song will blend the artistic and the commercial.
