Drama hasn’t been scarce in Armenia. During the first semi-final of Depi Evratesil, Wiwi Jury favourite Tamar Kaprelian was eliminated, leaving many fans scratching their heads. And the drama won’t dissipate anytime soon as the glamorous Kamil prepares to set the stage on fire during the second semi-final.

Kamil has already made a mark with the media in Armenia. She trash-talked her competitors in January, revealing that they had no chance to beat her. She was also very confident that she will be winning Depi Evratesil and receiving 12 points from Spain with her Spanish-language entry “Puerto Rico”.

With the second semi-final fast approaching, Kamil talked to wiwibloggs about her upcoming performance. Be warned: the attitude is blinding!

Kamil Show interview

What’s the idea behind your look?

This is the only question I wish to answer as Arsen Grigoryan, not Kamil. The idea behind Kamil’s look is to show everyone how unfairly we treat ourselves nowadays. We take for granted that beautiful vessel of nature, that magic body, which works for us 24/7 over years, without having rest even when we sleep. Kamil is the grotesque embodiment of all those men and women who blindly hate some particular parts of their bodies or the entirety of those, without appreciating the beauty they possess. But Kamil grew over that self-hatred, she learnt to love her strange reflection in the mirror and she wants everyone to appreciate and love what nature gifted them with.

Is Conchita an inspiration for you? Or are there other Eurovision divas (drag or otherwise) that are an inspiration?

Every single winner inspires me, no matter whether that’s a Eurovision, Olympics or World Football Cup winner.

Why did you choose to sing in Spanish as opposed to Armenian or English?

I’ve decided to sing in Spanish, because I didn’t have enough money to buy lyrics in Armenian or English, while the Spanish lyrics were given to me for free by Arthur Abgar.

What are your feelings when performing “Puerto Rico”? How do you connect with the song despite not speaking Spanish yourself?

I get really emotional when performing my song. It’s like the same feeling when you’re sitting in a VIP room in a luxury club in Ibiza, but there’s a moment that you just wanna leave the VIP to go and get crazy with all the crowd. The same is with my song — I’m being soooo EMOTIONAL that it breaks the language barrier.

What wig and outfit should we expect to see you wearing on stage?

My hair, makeup and costumes will be the masterpieces by the most prominent professionals in Armenia. Those are Ani Avdalyan for hair, makeup by Ashkhen and stage outfit by Kivera Naynomis. I told them I need something comfortable to do thousands of selfies on that special day. My choreographer Sona Yesayan showed me the best selfie poses, I assure you!

Will you be performing alone on stage or will you have support? Anything else you’d like to share about your stage show?

Oh, my girls will be with me. It’s gonna be the girl power burning the floor.

You’ve already collaborated with Lilit Hovhannisyan. Are there any other Armenian artists you would like to collaborate with?

When I was broken, sad and hopeless, Lilit Hovhannisyan gave me a helping hand by singing in a duo with me. Now I’m strong enough to give hope and help other talented singers who are not famous yet.

What do you think of your Depi Evratesil competitors? Who is your biggest competition and which songs do you like?

I LOVE my competitors, because they are the best company for me to win. I like the vast majority of the songs, really. It became habitual to poison myself with coffee with Tamar’s poison, when I wake up in the morning. When I’m working out I’m listening to Asmik’s song. When I feel romantic I enjoy listening to Sevak’s song. Mger Armenia reminds me of eternity. But in the end of the day I turn my song on loudly and it gives me winning emotions. I can’t help praising Vahram Petrosyan for writing it for me! Long live Lazzaro’s beats!

Do you think you can win Eurovision?

I was born to win Eurovision!

Outside of Eurovision, what do you hope to achieve in the near future?

I wish I could walk along the entire Chinese wall. It would have helped me losing some weight.

Thank you Kamil, all the best for your performance on Thursday!

I don’t like it , it’s a horrible song and she she does is scream over her backing singers who do a great job singing the song on their own. I find it a bit of an insult that this Kemal show should be compared to a wonderful and sensational star such as Conchitta . Lgbt stars in Eurovision are well credible artists in their own rights . In my opinion Kemal show is taking a mockery of lgbt rights in the west , sad to say Armenia is one of the most homophobic countries in Europe and very much… Read more »

After knowing that Tamar is not going to represent Armenia this year, i really hope for Kamil to win. It’s interesting and fun. And she have amazing personality ?? She’s honest about the truth she don’t have money to buy english or armenian lyric, she don’t sugarcoat anything. It doesn’t matter she’s a drag queen or not. She’s a nice person, and we need more like her in ESC 😉

This song is super energetic, and catchy, can’t say the same about the rest of armenian contestants, Sevak has a wonderful voice, but the song is soooo boring, the same is with Mger and Asmik. Kamil i see you as a winner!!!!

There’s no way Armenia sends something like this. Too homophobic for that. But she’s actually much better than any other act in DE18.

Couple of rumored gays are in the final so I’d not talk about homophoby as something that may not let Kamil to do well. Conchita was 2nd in Armenian televotes in 2014. And jurors are not from Armenia 😉

This is not going to progress, it’s not a bad song but politically there is no chance. On the other hand everyone is waiting for the live show of Asmik. Hoping it’s going to meet our expectations

As I said before, please don’t win. Take an act like this to a poor national final so that there is no chance of us losing a potential Eurovision-winning quality song from Armenia. Asmik or Sevak to win!

One drag queen won’t turn the entire contest into Drag Race All-Stars. The same year as Conchita we had The Common Linnets, Ruth Lorenzo, Aram Mp3, Kallay-Saunders, etc.

Everyone has a right to participate in it and so do drag queens.
If it’s a bad song then it’s a bad song, no matter who sings it, because it’s a song contest.
So, lets judge participants by their songs and vocals and not by who they are.

Me heart is still bleeding for Tamar. Corruption has gone so deep they didn’t even feel ashamed of eliminating her from Semis. They could have done that in the finals, as there are stronger contenders like Sevak, Kamil or Asmik. It was just ridiculous to see Tamar left in Semis. I’m sure that one of these trio will be left in Semis, too. They will do everything to send First Lady’s puppet Mger.

I am hugely disappointed with Tamar’s performance but Armenia usually sends very good entries. My faves were in 2016 and 2017.

Well Armenian fans say that the script has only 2/3 of Sevak, kamil and Asmik passing through to the final…. So let’s see if the story is a construct or the truth!!

Thanks for this interview.
Ironically this act is so “out there” and politically incorrect that she might actually be the most memorable act Armenia will ever send. But is this “too much” joke over substance for today’s serious times?

Because of some not professional journalists, that name Kamil a drag queen, people are in confusion. THIS IS NOT A DRAG SHOW!!! Kamil is a famous comedy character in Armenia and the actor also is very famous, who plays multiple roles, even in serious movies . just treat this as a trash act.

Why should they do that? Talk about corruption? Talk about songs which don’t even have a melody or lyrics? There should be material to talk about. I don’t see anyone commenting on rubbish songs. They also won’t criticise Arm Public TV, as they collaborate with them. But WiWi need to talk about that corruption story openly and make the organisers feel ashamed.

I don’t think that Drag Act could be sophisticated and good ones. Song fully corresponds to its performer . This what I call real harmony the only thing I miss in this package is awful vocals. I mean disgusting vocals.

yes, he/she (don’t blame me, I don’t know wether I should referr to that Person as it’s artistic character or the real person) is funny and everything, but the song is nothing. Really, like nothing! It’ll be a mess live. Don’t send this song, Armenia, you have more to offer.

Well, all I can say for sure is that Armenia will never send this “person” to Eurovision because we want to save our reputation for a long time. We are required to make a choice between Sevak (who sings a pleasant ballad with a big message in Armenian language) and Asmik (who tries to be more modern and be on the same line with modern music). But I feel that Sevak will win and Asmik will be the second. We haven’t sent male singers since 2014, and Sevak’s song is completely in Armenian (we have never sent a song completely… Read more »

Oh, she’s one of my favorites from DepiEvratesil. I guess she will pass to the Grand Final, but unfortunately, I don’t see her as a winner of DepiEvratesil (as you can see, there is a big corruption) but she could probably be in top 5 very easy in Eurovision and she could be the most memorable and favorite performer not only for LGBT society, but also for everyone.
I think the bloody bath will be between Sevak and First Lady’s puppy (Mger). And I HOPE Asmik will be in the final.

Good for her! We’ll be rooting and I’m pretty sure the televiewers are going to sail this one through to the final. It would be hilarious if this represented Armenia and actually won the contest. Given that in the past 2 years unconventional serious entries have, something light-hearted and fun winning the contest would be a good contrast.

Thiefoworld

Oh God, she’s hilarious, hah! At first I had mixed feelings about “Puerto Rico”, objectively the song is trash, obviously a joke entry… but for some reason I grew to like it. Depending on the live performance and if the staging is good enough, it might be an interesting one, it has the potential of being incredibly good (not sure if even Verka Serduchka level) or go terribly wrong. I guess we’ll know soon enough.
