The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals reviews the eight acts who will be competing in the anda chansen round of Melodifestivalen 2018. Next we take a look at professional dancer Sigrid Bernson with “Patrick Swayze”. Did it make us want to dance? Read on to find out!

Sigrid Bernson – “Patrick Swayze”

“Patrick Swayze” reviews

Angus: So she uses backing vocals? So what! Sigrid is hardly the only artist to amp up their vocals at Melodifestivalen: just watch back Eric Saade or Sanna Nielsen in action. She’s also bringing killer choreography and a catchy chorus to the table. “Patrick Swayze” may start abruptly, but once it’s got lift off, it is an earworm that grows and grows. Her vocals do need work – that’s undeniable – but fun dance-pop has a place at Melfest and Sigrid delivers that with aplomb.

Score: 5.5/10

Bernardo: I’m sorry but this song doesn’t lift me up like Patrick Swayze. Sigrid tries her best to sell a song that easily falls in the average, borderline cringe category. Although, she provides a good show for the entire three minutes and after a few listens you’re humming the chorus. If quality is rewarded, “Patrick Swayze” will stay in Andra Chansen. For me, it should have stayed in its semi.

Score: 3/10

Josh: Where other acts bring quality to Melodifestivalen, Sigrid Bernson brings the cringe. The beginning sounds incredibly derivative of “I Gotta Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas, and the song shifts into a downward spiral very quickly. Sigrid’s vocal is weak and feels a half-second behind the backing vocal. Snaps and claps for some great choreography and a bright colour palette, but someone definitely needs to put this baby in a corner.

Score: 4/10

Luis: This is one of the worst entries to have made it to Andra Chansen in recent years. It’s both annoying and cringeworthy and Sigrid can’t sing. The worst part of it is that it’s a deserving qualifier, given deltävling 1’s level. The only decent part of it is the choreography. Yes, even with the cheap trick at the end with the “audience member”. She says she’s gonna lift us up, but everything surrounding “Patrick Swayze” is quite depressing.

Score: 3/10

Robyn: It’s clear that Sigrid is more a dancer than a singer, but even still, it sounds like she’s almost totally relying on the backing vocals. But that aside, “Patrick Swayze” isn’t even a good song. It’s at the bottom end of Melfest pop, comparable with recent efforts from Dolly Style. The dancing is good — but it’s not like there’s a shortage of good dancers at Melfest. But otherwise, there’s very little to like about the “Patrick Swayze” experience.

Score: 3/10

William: Like her boyfriend Samir Badrans, Sigrid Bernson is easier on the eyes than she is on the ears. Our girl cannot sing! And that likely explains why the backing vocals are cranked way up and why the electronic production overwhelms this ditty. Compounding matters, her song relies on a mediocre hook. I’m not impressed and I doubt the ghost of Patrick Swayze is either.

Score: 3/10

OK…..but I don’t think this should go to the final! Don’t get the theme of the song tbh.

A 6/10

It gives me Icona Pop I Don’t Care vibes which I love~! but the Patrick Swayze thing makes it cheesy. 4/10 for me.

It’s a copy of “I Gotta Feeling” by The Black Eyed Peas. Disgusting.

The beat is a mix of that and Icona Pop/Charli XCX.

Don’t understand the really low score. I mean, she isn’t a fantastic vocalist but she doesn’t sound really off to me. She gives a nice show, has a fantastic personality and is really easy on the eyes. Plus, her song is a super guilty pleasure, I actually really like it and I see her easily making the final. 7.5/10

Of Course this gets 4.51 Points… I’m not saying that it’s amazing but I’m one hundred percent sure that Mariette will get a 7 or an 8 for her boring Piece of Music just because she’s Mariette and you want her to have a good song… I’d give 6 Points to ”Patrick Swayze” tho.

I actually find it better than Benjamin or S&V. It’s still not as good as Renaida or Ida are, but it is a really well made song and it seems, that people enjoy it

Don’t hate it and can get through it but I have to acknowledge that it is pretty bad. Melfest filler is not supposed to get out of the heats.

This will still likely make the final. It’s the most streamed of the AC songs on spotify so far.

It has a one week advantage on the others, though.

I’m glad to see the low scores. Lyrics, vocals and production are horrid.

I don’t find this cringeworthy at all. It’s a feel-good song with fun lyrics and positivity. Sigrid is energetic and her smile brightens the day. She isn’t the best singer, but i love her energy and i heard this song at a ckub, it was great 🙂

Aw. It’s a shame to see this get such a low score, it’s a real guilty pleasure for me. My 2nd favourite of this year :p
