Netherlands, Waylon, 1

Nearly a month ago, Waylon revealed that he would present five new songs from his upcoming album The World Can Wait. One of these five songs will be his Eurovision entry, but which one will remain a secret until next Friday. Today, he sang the first of those songs, “Back Together”.

Waylon says that all five songs were self-penned in the country capital itself, Nashville.  Instead of the selection comittee chosing the song, Waylon revealed that he had chosen by himself.

He also revealed that he will go alone on stage with Hans Pannecoucke — who also did the Common Linnets’ staging (and Trijntje’s disaster) — being his director.

Waylon — Back Together

Waylon presented his song live during the broadcast of the talk show De Wereld Draait Door. The four remaining songs — called “Outlaw in Em”, “The World Can Wait”, “That’s How She Goes” and “Thanks But No Thanks” — are to be presented in the next four broadcasts of the show, from 26 February through to 1 March.

A day later on 2 March, Waylon will reveal which of the five songs is his Eurovision entry.  Waylon is aware of the possibility that the general public might not receive his chosen Eurovision entry well and would prefer another. He said on an earlier visit at DWDD:

“If I am nervous? No, that does not make sense to me. Not [nervous] about the reception as well.”

The presentation of “Calm After The Storm” as part of the Common Linnets in 2014 caused a generally mixed to negative reaction among the Dutch audience and celebrities. RTL Boulevard panelist Albert Verlinde famously stated that he would eat his chair if the Common Linnets would win Eurovision with what he deemed as a “funeral song”.

Do you think Waylon should perform “Back Together” at Eurovision 2018 in Lisbon? Let us know in the comments below!

Sounds great, looking forward to hear the rest of the songs!

This is really good, but not the right one for Eurovision. I feel like sth is missing. The song doesn’t have what will make it stand out. It’s not unique. Nevertheless, I like it! Looking forward to the rest!

It’s a decent song… like a lot of people are saying, an album track. Better than anything in Melfest though.

Not getting Eurovision vibes with this song, but it does sound like a song that would get lots of airplay on CMT. It’ll be interesting to see what he actually goes with.

It’s alright. Not gonna eat my chair if it wins, though.

Waylon’s an excellent live talent. Great vocallist. But country music just isn’t to my taste. I’m so sorry! I just hear so much whining about life in those songs! Stop drinking at the bar, get out there and live your life – LOL. (I actually wrote a song about this once.)

I think whining about life is kind of the point of country music. 😛 I find it very soothing, if it’s done well.

I wonder how Ilse feels about Waylon’s solo gig at Eurovision. 😉 I also wonder if he’s got THE song to win. Personally, I’d like to see this kind of genre winning at Eurovision, as it comes quite close to my personal taste. I think presenting five songs he chose himself and then letting the public which song he’s actually going with is smart. I would do the same. Some promotion can’t hurt, but you gotta know for yourself that you have got THE song, not A song (Saara Aalto, take note!). So let’s just hope he actually has THE… Read more »

I don’t think Ilse cares much. They were never friends and their coorporation stopped as soon as Eurovision 2014 was over. Personally, I don’t care much about Waylon without her. He is a great vocalist, but all his songs sound the same to me. And he has an attitude that I don’t like.

This is already excellent but I expect even better songs from Waylon next week ! Voice and charisma are here without any doubt ! Can’t wait to listen to the 4 other songs !

This is not your typical #Melfest song people. His voice is incredible and already something that makes him unique in this years contest. The song is a nice start. Its definitely not a bad song. Its quality, you can hear that, but it’s not the song he can win with. He really wants to do well and he know he has to come up with something better and i believe, well I bet, he will! Dont think this guy cant deliver. He will deliver.

Great voice. Good song. Noce start.

Their is going to be a lot of standing on stage and just singing into a microphone this year me thinks.

(As opposed to clothes ripping, LED balancing, water dancing, backflipping, etc…) it’s going to be the year of the chair, the Plynth and light up dress.

A nice album filler, but not a standout lead song – although his voice does sound really great, and I hadn’t actually fully appreciated how good he is before now. It was all about Ilse for me!

It’s an okay country song but it had kind of a whiny emotionality to it that I find a little annoying. I’m pretty sure that there will be better songs among the five.

That’s a very good start. Many won’t like the style, but his vocals are great and the song is quite good. I’m still hoping for some southern rock vibes on one of the next songs.

I really like it, he has such an unusual voice. It’s not your typical Eurovision entry which is a good thing. I’d be fine if this was his song and it does give me hope that one of the others will be a strong entry for Eurovision.

I have a feeling the 3th song, the world can wait, is gonna be his eurovision song, because his new tour is called the world can wait. But i like this one to, but i know he can do better.

Great start Waylon, I know you’re gonna do this. Not sure what’s to come yet but if this goes to ESC you’re gonna do just fine. Better than anything we’ve heard so far.

I hope this is not his final song, but it’s a nice start. Someone else in the audience said ‘I don’t think that this is the final song’, I hope that’s true. I’m really excited for what’s yet to come. 🙂
