Latvia Supernova 2018 finalists poll

Supernova, the Latvian national grand final was held in Riga tonight. After an exciting competition, it was Laura Rizzotto who, after delivering a memorable and sultry performance, came, saw and took the trophy.

21 songs started their journey in hopes of becoming Triana Park’s successor. After a brutal cull in the semi-finals, only eight songs remained, including fan favourites MADARA, Marcus Riva and  the winner, Laura Rizzotto.

After all eight songs had finished performing, it was a combination of jury and public votes that decided the winner of Supernova 2018. As reported before, the public vote is a mix of web voting, Spotify streams and good ol’ televoting.

And the results were clear. Laura Rizzotto proudly raised the trophy and will represent Latvia in Lisbon come May with the song “Funny Girl”.

Wiwibloggs readers agree. Earlier in the week we asked readers who should win Supernova 2018. Laura placed 2nd in the poll, with 27.29% of the total vote.

Sudden Lights came second and the ultimate fan favorite from our poll, MADARA finished a respectable 3rd place.

Supernova 2018 – running order

  1. Sudden Lights – “Just Fine”
  2. Ritvars – “Who’s Counting?”
  3. MADARA – “Esamiba”
  4. Liene Greifane – “Walk the Talk”
  5. Lauris Valters – “Lovers Bliss”
  6. Edgars Kreilis – “Younger Days”
  7. Laura Rizzotto – “Funny Girl”
  8. Markus Riva – “This Time”

Are you happy with Latvia’s choice? Do you think that Laura Rizzotto will qualify from the semi-finals? What was your choice? Please let us know in the comments below!

Latvia would be my personal winner if they chose MADARA. They killed their chance of qualifying by choosing ‘Funny Girl’. The song is a total cliché and the second semi-final is full of overrated countries like Sweden and Russia and a total bloodbath.

It is one of the better entries chosen this year. I like her voice and the song is really good too. Latvia definitely has a chance at the final.Much better than that awful Triana Park.

I’m sorry. But I really can’t stop smiling after this overhype was for nothing. I have nothing against Madara and I actually liked Esamiba. However, I always like when these overhyped “winners” crash very hard, it’s a defect I think (I’m watching you “La Forza” LOL). Laura did a great performance and could become a qualifier in May, but not very sure with Latvia being in the second semi, but Latvia’s odds have been getting closer to the Top 20. So fingers crossed.

I think it’s a natural reaction – when some song is praised too much it always pull some people who don’t think the song is that great into opposition and they start to like it even less, dislike it or even hate it. Or at least that’s my theory.
I also like seeing overhyped songs fail – unless it’s my favourite too.

This was a bad evening for Eurovision, Ukraine didn’t choose Tayanna and Madera didn’t win here. We could have gotten two great entries in different styles to Eurovision, but nope… Mediocrity won instead.

The song is good and very memorable, as well as the music itself which isn’t true for plenty of entries. Laura’s charisma is how she’s going to nail this, she sells it really well on stage, but I think it’s a shame her vocals aren’t a bit more powerful, I really see the Bond connections mentioned, but she’s no Shirley Bassey or Adele! Obviously that’s a very high standard vocally, I just think more power would improve this song, but it’s still very near my top.

I feel like I should like this because of the performer and the well-thought lyrics, but I actually don’t enjoy it. The beat brings me an anxiety and by the time the bridge comes I’ve already not enjoyed this. Kinda monotonous I think. They should make it more melodic with guitars/pianos/violins than that beat.

Alright, even though we’re finding out about two more countries tomorrow, I might as well revise my top. Now it’s: 1. Germany 2. Spain 3. France 4. Italy 5. Czech Republic 6. Greece 7. Albania 8. Moldova 9. Malta 10. Montenegro 11. Hungary 12. Serbia 13. United Kingdom 14. Latvia 15. Ukraine 16. Slovenia 17. Denmark 18. Belarus (Side note: I can’t remember the last time there was a year when four of the Big Five were good enough to be in my top five. Funny girl & Esamiba were the only best options from Supernova to Lisbon. Sadly Madara has let anxiety to dominate her live performances and we almost lost the magic behind the song (I remember one of the juries has related Madara’s nerves after SF’s act). However, my Brazilian heart is jumping because of Laura’s flawless act. Portugal isn’t going to send Mallu Magalhães, but Latvia will do with Laura. Good move, Supernova. #TeamLaura #FunnyGirlPower
And congrats Madara for Esamiba. I hope she gives (and the audience too) a second chance in 2019.

Sudden Lights and the group that won in Hungary are similar, i think they would ruin each others chances. Madara was one of my favs as well, but i don’t see many people voting for it,and we just can’t be sure she would give us amazing live performance in Lisbon. Laura will always deliver, because she is a pro! Funny Girl was the only song i liked when i listened to all 60 songs, then Esamiba hype started and i joined the party. When Sudden Lights performed in 1st semi i knew they would return as a wildcard and be… Read more »

Laura is very good in performing “Funny Girl”. She had control over her vocal expressions and body language like no one else in this final. In my eyes, the song only works because of her way presenting it. The song leaves me cold musically, but lyrically it touches me, because of its clear storytelling and the striking image of the “funny girl”. A solid choice with potential for a surprising result in Lisbon.

Esamiba was my #1. Funny girl the #2. This one is good but boring overall. I felt like I had heard a thousand times before from the first notes. Props for Laura’s very confident performance. It’s the best performance I’ve seen so far. I expect an even more confident and powerful performance from Yianna from Greece. Greece is my most expected performance, that picture on the official video is not enough!

You know what Esamiba was an absolute favorite of mine. One of the best songs to be entered in a national final selection ever! But Funny girl is a nice song performed very well. Laura sells it and I think she will qualify.

“Wiwibloggs readers agree. (…) Laura placed 2nd in the poll.”

There’s a contradiction there. If Wiwibloggs readers would agree, she would be first in the poll, right?

It’s ok but I don’t see it qualifying from SF2, unless the staging will help it massively. Not many interesting things happen here and the song repeats itself. Still, nothing to be ashamed of.

It looks like Latvia needs Aminata to become their Kirkorov/Siegel.

I really think “Esamiba” is a masterpiece. Since the day one, this was my favorite option for Latvia and I could see it getting first place on my personal ranking. But on the live shows, something was off. On the semifinal, I thought Madara was nervous. But tonight she gave a much more confident performance and it didn’t worked for me again. The impact from the studio version was partially lost. I believe it was something fixable, but it opened a door for the competition. And then came Laura with a flawless performance on the semi and a very good… Read more »

You basically summed-up most of what I had to say, except that Esamiba did work for me perfectly in the live and I voted for it via Facebook. If it won it would have been my 1st. But, yeah, Laura was pretty much flawless in live and Funny Girl was my 5th favorite when all 63 songs came out anonymously. I know I should be happy, but I am also sad, cause Esamiba is in my heart. Anyway, good luck to Laura. PS. So glad that Sudden Lights were second. They were my 4th fav since the beginning (and 2nd… Read more »

Leave latvians alone! It’s not that bad. Laura is a sweet girl. Her performance was on point and vocally she was flawless. I had 3 favorites Madara, Laura and Sudden Lights. Any way someone would be disappointed in results so shut up. Maybe now latvians will wake up and will start writing song in latvian for ESC. By the way latvians are not very keen on songs in latvian at ESC and i don’t know why. Wish the best for Laura she deserves that!!

Very happy for Laura. No one else in all honesty would have been a better choice. Perhaps Sudden Lights could have done bits but no Madara. I like the song but let’s be serious. It would have been another “Latvian entry that didn’t qualify but in all fans eyes would be ‘the most underrated song ever’”
Laura showed how it’s done today and no one was quite close to her.
