Diogo Piçarra Cláudia Pascoal

Olá, outra vez! After a very competitive first semi-final (that included a voting mistake from RTP), the traditional Festival da Canção was back for its second semi-final.

Seven acts from the thirteen competing made it to the final. In the end, Diogo Piçarra, Cláudia Pascoal, Maria Inés Paris, Minnie & Rhayra, Lili, David Pessoa and Peter Serrado won the coveted golden ticket to Guimarães.

While the ballad influence continued, tonight’s show showcased more diversity, with influences from Africa and contemporary pop while maintaining clear Portuguese roots.

Few surprises here, as Diogo Piçarra came on top of the voting, with his song “Canção do fim”. He won both the jury and the televote, and amassed 24 points.

Diogo Piçarra – “Canção do fim”

In second place we have Cláudia Pascoal with “O Jardim”, with 20 points (10 from the jury and another 10 from the televote). In the bronze position we have Maria Inés Paris, who opened the show, and then had to perform again due to some technical problems. Her entry “Bandeira Azul” received 12 points (seven from the juries, five from the audience).

In fourth place there was Minnie & Rhayra, with their curiously titled “Patati Patata”. They got 10 points, just like Lili, with her entry “O voo das cegonhas”. In sixth and seventh place, with nine points both, there were Peter Serrado and David Pessoa.

Cláudia Pascoal – “O jardim”

Therefore, the qualifiers are:

  • Diogo Piçarra with “Canção do fim”
  • Cláudia Pascoal with “O jardim”
  • Maria Inés Paris with “Bandeira Azul”
  • Minnie & Rhayra with “Patati Patata”
  • Lili with “O voo das cegonhas”
  • David Pessoa with “Amor veloz”
  • Peter Serrado with “Sunset”

And the six songs that don’t proceed to the final are:

  • Susana Travassos with “Messageira”
  • Tamin with “Sobre nós”
  • Daniela Onis with “P’ra là do rio”
  • Rita Ruívo with “Anda dai”
  • Dora Fidalgo with “Arco-íris”
  • Sequin with “All over again”

“CANÇÃO DO FIM“ had me clutching my pearls. What a stunning song! Beautifully simple, in the same fashion as Salvador brought last year. This feels like the winner and a natural progression from last year. What a beautiful follow up entry.

Everybody talking about the plagiarized music of Diogo that people have forgotten that Isaura also plagiarized “The Wings” by Gustavo Santaolalla who composed a song for the movie “Brokeback Mountain”.

I don’t really care what Portugal send, just as long as it sounds like it’s vaguely from the 21st century. If they send a Salvador rip-off, they’ll probably flop – Tu cancion will hoover up all of those votes. It doesn’t really matter, anyway – RTP definitely don’t want to win again so soon.

I loved Peter Serrado’s voice. I guess the problem is that his song is so much different than the rest of the contestants than it sounded almost like he was on a different competition. I’m glad that he will bring some diversity to the final.

Wow! “Canção do fim” was so good! Diogo gave a stunning performance! Simple yet beautiful. I loved the instruments around him. I was touched without knowing what he was singing. I also liked“O jardim”. It’s in Portuguese and yet it doesn’t sound dated at all. Honourable mention: “Patati Patata” (a fun, up-beat song at last, entertaining act) “Canção do fim”: What a performance! Simple yet beautiful. I loved the instruments around him. I was touched without knowing what he was singing. “Amor veloz”: Nice melody. Boring. “O jardim”: What I like about this song is that it’s in Portuguese and… Read more »

Now this resemblance is funny. Diogo didn’t copy that song but this melodic coincidence just shows how poor his composition is. And there I say it, also the lyrics could be richer. His intentions were great, but the end result falls a bit behind what one could expect of a singer/songwriter with such hype. But he will most probably win the national selection this year. So best of luck Portugal. 😉

Diogo is beautiful, the melody is beautiful, but my heart goes to Claudia Pascoal. That song is just magic.

My TOP 5 from the 2 semi-finals

– Lili “Voo das Cegonhas”
– Peter Serrado “Sunset”
– Janeiro “(sem título)”

Really don’t understand the hype around Diogo Picarra’s song. He’s capable of so much better than this uninteresting ballad which after Salvador doesn’t come across sincere at all. I personally don’t even think the tone of the song fits his voice.

I wonder how the Portuguese people can watch Festival da Cançao enterily, so boring. Don’t get me wrong, I like slow songs, but this is too much. They are not even good.

It was obvious Diogo Pizarra and Claudia were going to top this SF. I personally prefer Claudia. My fav was Sequin, “All Over Again” was really beautiful and special, but her performance wasn’t enough.

Good comment. Diogo song has nothing to do with Salvador, though. Only the fact that it has violins, but we had similar songs to Sobral in our Festival da cancao before, so it’s not new.

We know that the songs are different (Diogo’s song isn’t even a love song!), but many people will try to sell the idea that Portugal is trying the same trick again. And many will buy it, since they still hasn’t accepted Salvador’s win and also the “feelings vs fireworks” speech. I agree that’s their problem. Even “Mercy” became a ballad for some people. They’re getting crazy! It’s also annoying how all slow songs are the same thing to them. A rock song would be awesome, but Festival da Canção hasn’t offered much variety this year. So I agree that Portugal needs to work with the best they have and it would be a ballad one more time. I would say that your country’s mission in 2018 is to reaffirm that Portugal is looking for quality and any of the entries we mentioned are classy acts, even if individually they could… Read more »

My only fear is the alignment. If we send a ballad and get paired between Spain and Germany…i mean…it could be crucial for us and for them too, it’s not gonna stand out much… but that could also happen to a pop song, i guess. Still it may not mean anything, Ukraine was super different last year and they got bottom 5. The songs are ok, we gotta improve the staging. Not sure if you felt the same, but im seeing too much of these ‘let’s stand still on stage and do nothing else’ stagings…btw the composer was also on… Read more »

Piçarra is overrated as hell.
Not saying his song wasn’t good – it was – but it wasn’t one of the best, and yet…
My personal favourite is Cláudia Pascoal with ‘O jardim’!

Oh yeah! I’m just mesmerized with it! Such a lovely, nowadays and beautiful song. Diogo just uses an old formula again and again in this song. He sings every phrase the same way…

No, it’s just the way of him singing. I follow him since the beginning. Then again, people said salvador was boring and looked like a drug addict. Nothing new.

Diogo it’s not this song… no way! Jonh Malt is right… this is just safe, Diogo himself said that he stopped to be Diogo Piçarra and he did this song just thinking on FC, that’s just wrong… the song he noemally do are far better than this

LMAO. Diogo has always done ballads. The only difference is, this one uses violins and talks about more than love. That’s what he meant.

é so punheteiros do piçarra meu deus, que degredo xD

Obrigado. Opiniões, gostos, etc etc, não precisam de argumentos, deverias pensar nisso. De resto, mais nada a acrescentar

Don’t get me wrong. I love Diogo. I just don’t think that this one, specifically, was his best. I was expecting some electric feeling to it. With that said, I love Diogo from the start also, but for me it’s Claudia with O Jardim for the win!

Diogo Piçarra, Claudia, Peter or Catarina Miranda! Good luck Portugal! I only dislike Maria Inês and Peu Madureira.

I hope Claudia Pascoal (with Isaura) wins FC like Jamala won ESC for the God’s sake!
Diogo Piçarra is overrated comparing with masterpiece “O Jardim”.
