Mikolas Josef Lie to Me Czech Republic

When we last checked on the Eurovision betting odds on February 11, Bulgaria was sitting pretty as the favourite to win it all with odds as low as 13/2. At that time the Czech Republic‘s Mikolas Josef was down as seventh favourite with odds as low as 16/1.

As more and more entries have been revealed in recent days, Bulgaria has held steady at the top with odds as low as 5/1. This may be down partly to the hype, confirmed by Aftonbladet, that Loreen had been in talks about potentially representing Bulgaria at Eurovision…though their sources say she won’t do it after all. In any event, hype lingers about their entry — and their hunger to win Eurovision is already well-established.

And while Bulgaria has narrowed, the Czech Republic has narrowed more significantly, with Mikolas’ odds now as low as 7/1. He has leapt past Estonia, Finland, Australia and Belgium. He is now the highest-ranked act of those who have actually revealed their competing entry for Eurovision. Spain is down as seventh favourite, followed by Italy in 11th and France in 12th.

Eurovision 2018: Odds to win (28 February at 19:20 GMT)

A number of the acts currently near the top will choose their Eurovision songs this weekend.

Estonia, currently the third favourite with the bookies, will stage the final of Eesti Laul on Saturday. It’s thought that Elina and her operatic number “La Forza” have paved the way for the country’s high ranking with the bookies. Can she survive at home and make their predictions a reality?

Finland, who sits just behind Estonia as fourth favourite, will also choose its song that evening. Saara Aalto — who has turned heads with her provocative costume choices — will choose between a contemporary ballad called “Domino”, an off-kilter and upbeat number called “Queens” and fan front-runner “Monsters”.

Despite ongoing dismay over the quality of songs in Sweden’s Melodifestivalen, the country remains fifth favourite to win, owing, perhaps, to its record of success at Eurovision rather than its actual chances in 2018.

Switzerland, who chose the song “Stones” from the duo Zibbz, is currently in last position with the bet makers.

What do you think about the latest table? Do you think Czech Republic can challenge for the win? Let us know down below!

If you want to know who will win, the logic is simple. I’ve noticed in the last years that many jurors and many televoters have became very snobs and they care about one single thing : the world to not make fun of ESC again. They are so afraid of world making fun of us (esc fans), that will probably the votes will go to France, even though nobody will listen that song the next day.

I read the lyrics to this year’s Czech entry and is a no-brains song. So, how can it be ahead of not yet release Bulgarian entry? As of right now, the Spanish entry “Tu Canción” is perhaps the only song that could get my douze points in the Grand Final. The entries from Switzerland, the United Kingdom and France can pass as second best to none.

Switzerland is last place? Based on their track record, it is understandable, but I think Stones is a great song.

On what basis is Bulgaria frontrunner? They don’t have a very good track record. Yes they had entries that did well last two years but isn’t odds about constantly doing well and being in top 10? Having two entries that did well isn’t a reason to make it a frontrunner

Because they are using the same format as last year and have stated, and have made it clear that from the beginning they wanted a professional artist already on a record label and requested information on staging right from the beginning. Of course without the song/artist it’s hard to tell but the country has made it clear they want to win, so the bookmakers are keeping the odds low, just in case. They are not going to offer long odds on a country that is really keen on winning and using the same format that got them a 2nd, as… Read more »

Right but in the odds to win, no one is ranking all the songs in order ,so it doesn’t mean anyone thinks UK will come 29th. It’s automated based on how many bets each country has received,no one has forgotten who is a finalist.

L'oiseau

You can already see some trends in the odds, of what the qualifyers will be and what the scoreboard can indeed look like. But for the top marks it is too early to predict and even more so the winner. Don’t forget that last year Italy was leading the odds for months, going out of nr 1 only when the reharsals started, if I am not mistaken. Also we can expect sudden risers such as Belgium, once the song is out.

Just some facts from 2017 to illustrate my pont:
Greece: On 5 March was on 3rd place in the odds and it ended up 24th on the odds.
Belgium: On 6 March it was on 35th place, on the 8th March jumped on 2nd and ended up on 4th.
Portugal: On 5th March (final of the FdC) it was on 27th, next day it jumped on 8th; 19th March on 5th and ended up on 2nd during the actual show, having been on 1st two days before.

But in all of your examples the Songs weren’t released yet…. Czech Republic was around 40th place before Mikolas was announced as the winner and then it jumped to the top 10. It’s the same pattern as the one on your list, so your argument arguments against you, not for you…

No no. I am not sure about Greece, but for Portugal and Belgium the big jumps occurred precisely one day after the release, in case of Belgium and the victory of Salvador in Portugal.

I know what you meant, don’t worry! But it’s exactly the same thing with Czech Republic…. He got to the top 10 right after he won. Exactly how it went with Belgium or Portugal. I’m not sure what you’re trying to explain to me….

L'oiseau

Reply to  Weißbrot

You are right. Comparing last year Greece with Czech Rep is not correct, because Greece started falling down when the song became known and the opposite happened with CZ. But it can be similar to Bulgaria, though, which is in nr.1. Greece was in top 3, because there was quite a lot of hype about the Demi. The fact that Bulgaria is now in nr 1 doesn’t mean that is going to stay there. I guess what I am saying, it is too soon to make any conclusions, just yet 😛

Can someone explain to me why Ukraine is so low? Are all the bookies angry Tayanna fans? I know his enunciation isn’t very clear, but that can be fixed. It’s an upbeat song that should stand out from all the more serious songs, we know Ukraine can stage the hell out of just about anything, and they have a fantastic track record (if we pretend last year didn’t happen). So I just don’t understand why it’s so low?

Russia, Sweden and Norway are always like “referents” regarding ESC, that’s why they’re so up in the odds. We still don’t know what Austria and Portugal might bring , plus they’re not really that up (28-32). Georgia should be lower, it’s probably one of the least likely songs to win or even make to the final.

Regarding Ukraine, Melovin was on the Top 20 in the odds a few days ago, however he had been going down for quite a while now (currently at #23).

This is where we need EugeneESCUK to come in and teach us how betting odds work, again. 🙂
Don’t the odds on a song lower when more bets have been put on it?

Exactly, that’s why Czechia is 2nd place. The lower the Odds, the higher the place sand the ”chances to win”. Done.

Glad it’s as simple as it appears.

It makes me scrihm how people are wasting their money on Bulgaria without having heard their song.

Polegend Godgarina

It’s called wasting money, period. There’s no reason why Bulgaria would have high chances to win just because they had two good years.

The only decision the bookmakers make about odds is the setting point. Now every time a big bet is put on a song the odds for it winning will lower while that of other countries will rise.

Nobody thought Moldova could do it, remember OGAE poll, Moldova had 0 points. But I really don’t see Alekseev making a “Hey Mamma” success.

Nobody thought Moldova could do it, remember OGAE poll, Moldova had 0 points. It was very underrated, but it was one of the best performances of the night. However I really don’t see Alekseev making a “Hey Mamma” success.

Bulgaria waiting last minute to find song for win , when they heard other 42 songs from other countries.
I think at this moment Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland,Spain be out of TOP 5 some even from TOP 10 in eurovision final (Spain for me is contender for 16 to 21 place in final not for TOP 10).
Australia and Sweden will be in TOP 10., maybe even in TOP 5 , thanks to overrated points by juries
I think Italy and Frace is also overrated in betting odds
Serbia, Moldova and Romania is so underrated in odds.

If they were overrated, they’ll be Top 5. They’re barely scratching Top 10, unfortunately. The ones that are overrated are Finland, Sweden, Russia and maybe Australia. About the underrated, I really don’t believe Switzerland is the least possible song to win, that spot could go to Montenegro or Lithuania. Also, Albania is very low in the odds, despite very positive fan-welcoming.

You’re being too kind with Spain. Don’t lull us trying to make us think Spain is escaping another bottom 5. We’re in fact going for another bottom 5.

I wonder how long it’ll last – there are still plenty of songs to be picked/revealed, but congratulations to Mikolas! I hope it means he’ll not only qualify, but also get’s at least into top 10…or top 5. Too early to talk about winning though.

If the Czech Republic wins, maybe Slovakia will finally return to the contest.

Slovakia would be amazing, they’re very close with Czech Republic so if Mikolas does well, there’s a chance Slovakia might come back. Also, don’t forget that Liechtenstein is aiming to be an EBU member and to debut in 2019. It will be amazing to have them in ESC:

It is very important for us (CZE) to do very well and have a big succes… When Gabriela got 0 points in televoting, the newspaper and websites wrote only: Gabriela got 0 points! And she became second from the bottom.. And then Czechs are not interested in ESC, bcs they dont see succes, that we were in the final for the first time. We really need to finish very well, we need newspaper to write positive news! Then maybe will Eurovision become more famous here in the Czech republic and maybe Slovakia will see that and take a part in… Read more »

By the way, I will be very disappointed if Bulgaria just sends Kostov again after all that fuss and secrecy.

Because they’d just be repeating last year. You really don’t need to keep everyone in suspense with little riddles until the last minute when you’re going to do nothing different. Maybe it’s Kostov and Genova together?

Oh. No this would be really weird, they wouldn’t fit. Especially because of their age gap.

I mean, for me, the most relevant question always is: “Is it a good song?” And while it was undeniably successful at the contest, “Beautiful Mess” left me stone cold.

I don’t usually like These Kind of songs either and in the beginning I was like ”Yeah…Alright song, could be in my top 10.” but after a couple of days and weeks I started to love this song, I don’t even no why… It’s actually just a very well produced ballad with an amazing Instrumentation, but it moved something inside me that I can’t explain. Poli Genova however was a Little ”Meh” to me. I felt like I should love it but I just didn’t… Sometimes our heart works in mysterious ways.

Yeah, it would be kinda weird to see 31-year old woman performing with a 12-year old kid.

So, you dislike the anti-climax that it would bring. (That sounds naughty, but it’s not intended to be.) I think the team in Bulgaria have played their “A-game” for the past couple of years, but are still learning how to do it. I have no idea what is going to happen with the artist. But if it were Kris Kostov again it would have to be a stronger song than “Beautiful Mess” was, which is a challenge. Likewise with Poli Genova, the song would have to be stronger than “If love was a crime” (a.k.a. the Limey looter song); again,… Read more »

Wasn’t there this riddle of possible artists posted at wiwibloggs some time ago with a couple of previous Eurovision winners? Was there any other Bulgarian in the mix, besides Kostov and Genova? I feel like it kind of has to be one of them, so there most definitely won’t be a HUGE surprise, eh?

No worries. I have always been in the minority disliking the Austrian winner. I had lots of appreciation for Ilse and Waylon though. 😀
