In February, after weeks of speculation and years of fans wishing it were so, the Cypriot broadcaster RiK confirmed that Greek star Eleni Foureira would fly the Cypriot flag at Eurovision 2018.

And today she took the temperature in the Mediterranean to a whole new level with the official presentation of her song “Fuego”. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher close by when you hit play. It’s getting hot in here!

Eleni Foureira – “Fuego”

Traditional beats and sounds set the stage for what’s about to come — a major heat wave led by this Greek goddess.

Thematically the song works on a number of levels. Fuego could be the heat, passion and inspiration we draw from each other. It can also represent a sense of emancipation and strength — an internal smouldering that gives life, lust, love and more.

As she sings: “‘Cause I’m way up and I ain’t coming down, you takin’ me higher…’cause I’m burning up and I ain’t cooling down, I got the fire, fuego.”

This upbeat dance number will likely become a summer staple, as it cuts across borders and feelings. It moves from Cypriot realness to uptempo madness, merging all of the elements in an exciting three minutes that seem to speed by.

Visually, she reminds us that she knows how to put on a show. Slaying all of her outfits, she takes us on a visual and spiritual journey that shows off her versatility.

She’s queen of the castle in a barely-there bandage outfit with pink fringe; she’s diva of the manor in a red leather pantsuit; she’s a straight-up showgirl in a golden catsuit while writhing against a wall; she’s the woman who had a very good night as she lays splayed out on the floor clutching a pineapple the morning after; and she’s an urban diva as she works a billowing cape while dancing in a parking lot. Mix it up, right?

A long time coming

Eleni’s Eurovision dreams have been well documented in the past. Foureira almost made it to Eurovision in 2010, when she competed in the 2010 Greek national final with “Kivotos tou Noe”. While she missed out by coming in second place, that did not extinguish her Eurovision desire.

In 2013 Foureira made another appearance at the Greek national final — but this time as the interval act. She joined Ukraine’s first Eurovision winner Ruslana for an attitude-packed cover of “Wild Dances”.

Eleni also spoke out last year to complain about the Greek broadcaster’s “snub” of never selecting her. Clearly, she’s decided that enough is enough and it’s time for a change, and RiK were more than happy to bring her in!

What do you think about Eleni’s “Fuego”? Are you feeling the heat? Could Cyprus have a chance of qualifying for the Grand Final? Tell us in the comment section below!

Yes because what this is typical of fast food. One eats it, it tastes good for one minute, but after 30 min you are still hungry because the food didn’t have any nutrients. In the meantime it sickens you and makes you fat. Get healthy men and stop listening to that sh*

I totally disagree with you… to be honest when I first heard this song it didn’t mean so much to me… Surprisingly it grew so much in me lately that I can’t stop listening to it!! When I saw the writer of the song then I realised why… Alex Papaconstantinou wrote songs for Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Elena Paparizou etc. It’s a mater of taste… I guess you don’t like pop songs in general!! cause they would all be “fast food” songs for you!!

i kinda liked this, a lot actually… its super catchy and you can tell she would bring it on stage. Its the best one Ive heard so far, and the most upbeat.
I am not a fan of what the Portuguese guy said last year when he won, about it being’ about music and not firework’. Music is a personal and subjective thing. Someone music is someone else;s fireworks. If someone wants have fun and have fireworks, why the hell not??? Who are you to judge???

This song will do well in May, Pending of course the live vocals and performance. I think she will do a great job. Agree there is too much hate these days here with the comments of who is in and who is out, who is wrong and who is right. People interpret things so differently, sometimes misinterpreted and sometimes it gets a bit out of hand. How times are changing since the days of nil points Mona lisa and winners like boom bang a bang. My comment is just spread ‘the love’ it’s a song contest after all!

This is is not exactly my cup of tea, never was. Having said that, within its genre I think the song is very well produced and performed. It sound very contemporary and as a genuine pop song, not some left-overs. You can hear and see that a lot of thought and care was put in all the production elements. However it lacks this special thing that makes it stand out. But the key will be the life performance. It can kill it or it can lead to a whole new level.

Not bad, not great – it’s catchy enough so that the repetetive parts aren’t that much annoying, and the instrumental parts are good. I’m a bit worried about live vocals – not that they would be bad, but there’s some filter over the singer’s vocals in the studio version and so the live vocals will most likely sound different.

What he means is music is not fast food. It should be filling like a steak or fried chicken. When you make music filling you don’t get hungry. This is the message of the Eurovision

2 years ago exactly, “Cool me Down” was a “masterpiece” according to 99% of this forum. Fast forward 2 years and 1 Salvador Sobral victory later and somehow this forum is more of a McDonalds than a Eurovision forum with all the “fast food” talk. This is a club banger. It’s not supposed to reinvent the wheel in the music industry nor it is there to invoke deep emotions you never thought you could have. I’m pretty sure he said feelings, but i’ll have to agree with you. Most countried did send fillers. Good songs, don’t get me wrong, but mainly fillers for the show. Be open minded and try to appreciate things for what they are and not what you want them to be. Everyone is entitled to their taste. I actually appreciate this one. They just wanted to make a good song without trying to reinvent dance music, and it works.

What I *really* appreciate is the double instrumental chorus. You’re worried that there won’t be a real instrumental hook after the lyrics stop, and they make you wait for it and reward you. Very smart.

Cyprus have gone down at the odds since the release of “Fuego”. They were scratching the bottom of the Top 20 reaching #19. But now they’re back at #22. That must not be a good sign. Poor Eleni, although I still believe she might qualify to the Grand Final.

This year several countries seem to have though that having songs in Spanish, with parts in Spanish or even a name in Spanish (WTF) would do them right. Already seen that sad puppet for a flamenco song at the Moldavian NF, there’s a full song, even reggaeton, in the Melodi Grand Prix (don’t come and tell me that he is of Chilean descent, because I could not care less), and “Latinized efforts” here and there. Every year we need one of this. “Fuego” isn’t original, sounds like something Greece would send some years ago and doesn’t have a first class production, but it achieves its goal more or less. It’s not that I like it, but it doesn’t hurt anyone. Her live performance will determine her fate. If she can pull this out live, it will stand out among all the slower songs. I can see Cyprus 2018 placing like Israel 2017. Not a winner or a top 10 placing, though.

Well I agree on needing a pop song for the sake of balance so here it is. But gosh this is really weak one. I like the beat during the chorus (is there even chorus here??) but even that part is quite weak for me. The predictability is really strong in this one. I always like Mediterranean beats so I had high expectations, sadly it’s not enough fuego to make me dance.
This sells something else other than the song and she indeed is quite good at it I suppose. I’m not buying it tho so I’ll pass.

Well, it’s a good song for me. It’s actually much better than last year’s Greek and Cypriot entries. So good job, Cyprus! But the main issue with this entry will be her vocals I think. She’s not so good at live. But hopefully she’ll prove me wrong. Good luck.

One for the wig snatchers. Noisy, exciting and hollow. This is music for posing, zero emotional content. When people say “cheap,” I think they mean interchangeable, not making a lasting impact.

This adds to the variety of styles this year, so right on. I agree with everyone who wants some of this in Eurovision, but go ahead and put this in the dictionary under fast food music.
