Their real-life love story captivated Spain for months — and now they’re among the top 10 favourites to win the Eurovision Song Contest 2018.

And on Sunday evening Alfred & Amaia showcased their romance once more with the release of the official music video for “Tu canción”.

Keeping things pure and simple, the video opens with a solo shot of Alfred in the dark. The lights slowly illuminate him as he sings that he “would never have imagined that traveling to the Moon could be something real.” Then, in shots that deliberately mirror those, Amaia slowly comes into focus, saying that he turns “everything upside down when you kiss my forehead.”

That symmetry — of shot and sound — sets the tone for a video that’s all about the back-and-forth of their love and their voices, which, as ever, blend beautifully.

“Tu canción” official music video

Visually RTVE have done much to up the sartorial stakes. Rather than dressing Amaia as a secretary on her way to work (as in the Spanish national final), they instead portray her as someone young and stylish in a flowing blouse and skirt co-ord. It’s translucent enough in the light to be contemporary and striking, but there’s sufficient material — and cut in an elegant and flattering way — to preserve Amaia’s sophistication and demure. Alfred wears a black leather jacket which he leaves open, exposing a loose white t-shirt that smacks of easy-does-it style.

Their outfit choices — solid block colours, no patterns — help them stand out against the ever-changing backdrop, which moves from solid grey wall to a leaf-coloured floor with armchairs to a green setting with snow or air bubbles rising to the sky. At the climax of the song the duo seem to take flight — no doubt traveling to the Moon they mention in the opening bars — and grasp for each other as they do.

Can Spain win Eurovision 2018?

Their ascent in the music video mirrors their chances of winning Eurovision this year.

By March 9 the duo had climbed to the Top 5 in the betting odds, following the revamp of their entry, which has gone down well among fans. The new version gave the song added oomph, but still kept the tenderness and emotion that so many originally fell in love with.

With this climb up the odds table, the bookies seemed to suggest that Spain could be on to their best result at Eurovision for 17 years, when David Civera placed sixth in 2001 with “Dile que la quiero”.

With the release of all 43 songs almost complete, they’ve slipped down the oddstable to around ninth favourite. But surely with the right staging and live performance their fortunes could change once more.

What do you think of Spain’s music video? How do you think they’ll do in the grand final? Let us know down below.

Estoy cansado de los típicos tópicos la palabra vergüenza no se utiliza en conceptos tan superficiales, como el festival de Eurovision. Y de Que en si que vas tu presumiendo de tener un Español para ti, pues que te aproveche Xoxo.

I think you should try and write in English… Most people here do not understand Spanish and it is most ill mannered to comment something that most of the people here won´t understand. We Spaniards tend to be quite destructive to everything, and I don´t see this attitude in other European countries. Problem is that we have the idea that “España es la mejor (Spain rocks)” stuck in our heads and whenever someone criticizes us it is just because they hate us. Comments on artists at Eurovisión from Spaniards are 1000000 times worst than those you write dedicated to our… Read more »

I am Spanish…. and when I read Spanish fans writing: “We don´t care about the position, we just want to enjoy music” I can only think: “Yes, and my ass has three holes, for triple pleasure”. Of course we want to win… Spanish Eurofans want desperately to win Eurovisión. In Spain, today if you are a Eurovision fan, you are a freak. Spaniards have no real interest in Eurovision, most don´t have any clue about who is representing Spain in Eurovision, they do not give a dam. And this lack of interest is not because the Festival might be regarded… Read more »

not a good song, too sugary and uninteresting. Amaia has a great talent but she will not shine in the hands of the Spanish delegation. Also Alfred ruins the song even more. Bottom 5 for sure. And yes, I am Spanish

Spain is sometimes underrated in ESC and I think at the moment they dont really care about the final result in the contest. They like their choice, enjoy their song and love these two little birds, so whatever the result is, they will enjoy their performance, will thank those supporting their entry and end of the story. Dont have much expectations on the contest anymore.

Thanks for your words. Despite the hate comments, I am seeing how the illusion of the eurofans (and not eurofans) of my country resurfaces towards a song that we send, there are people (I think mainly fans of Amaia and Alfred) who starts to be interested in the festival, maybe only this year, maybe there is someone who discovers a new interest, I see fans of these guys translating the lyrics into different languages, making videos or writing tweets about the two singers or their relationship so that it reaches the rest of Europe and can understand the message they… Read more »

The best performance of this that I have seen is still the one during the show where they were just practising, sitting opposite each other.
They really need to simplify this. I don’t like the other-the-top instrumentation on the revamp either.

These little birds have all ingredients to rank quite high in the final if they are able to transmit to all of us what they are feeling. Their faces and smiles are adorable. She has an amazing sweet and clear voice, the lyrics are creative, and the song has a European essence. If the Spanish delegation is able to create an intimate but simple atmosphere on stage, with a very controlled level of sugar, this is, focusing on highlighting their quality as performers and the artistic values of their song rather than their effort to show their love, this can… Read more »

It is sad that you think that in Spain we care about the POSITION that we are going to be. In a festival that clearly influences politics (or musical culture) against us. If you will tell all South America you would understand. With this, I do not mean that you cant win. In Spain we see eurovision to enjoy ALL the songs and vote the best. We are proud of this song. Not for being Spanish. It’s melodic, the final bridge I love. With a real love story that was seen on the channel 24 hours of operation triumph for… Read more »

I think there are many more haters from Spain than the opposite. It is different to encourage the song of your country to really care about the position. It is not arrogance. We know that we are the best in music. For that we have FC Barcelona and Real Madrid! : D

This music video comes from the same creator who made Say Yay’s one. Now compare. Sure Barei had more time to prepare something decent, but still. RTVE-Gestmusic only care about making money. Now these “OT” guys are involved in a short concert tour in some spanish cities. Making big amounts of money is more important than sending something labored to Eurovision. They even sold tickets for their rehearsals. Frickin usurers. Look at the $$$ they are getting out of these kids, this is the rehearsal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWInOKNRLAE This is the concert (1:10 sight) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svlP5oibOqY A&A also have some promo parties around… Read more »

I completely agree with Javi and Miguel (and, yes I am also Spanish). I think the talent of Amaia is being misused by RTVE and Gestmusic. This was only a weak ultra-sugary song to catch the Spanish audience and secure millions of euros in concert tickets, never meant to win Eurovision. The problem of Spain in Eurovision is the old-fashioned, corrupted public television. Give the festival to a private chain and we will be sending more interesting stuff

France has released its official video on Friday, I hope they get a post too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ft3_DOajNY About Spain, it turns out that they have a chance to fight at the top of the scoreboard, something that I wasn’t expecting to happen when they picked “Tu Canción”. I don’t think this is a weak year, but a year without clear frontrunners. Spain has something that set them apart from the other countries. They have to stage it correctly though. The final version and the video are steps forward when compared to the OT’s Eurovision gala performance. Let’s see if they’ll keep… Read more »

I think you are right.
It’s a duo and duets do rather well with the Eurovision voters.
If they can stage it well they might end up high on the left side of the score board.

I have the same feeling. Unoriginality is been a trend in my country and this music video was done quickly yes (bc there’s no time to do something better) but also the main idea was not very creative. Still captures the message of the song.

I expect another round of obviousness for their staging.

But hey, If we get out of the bottom five embarrasment for once, enough for me.
