His Albanian-language song “Mall” translates as “Yearning” — and Eugent Bushpepa has brought that feeling to life in his official music video.

Directed by Ajola Xoxa, who happens to be the wife of Tirana’s mayor, the video captures a sense of longing and nostalgia through black-and-white imagery.

Throughout the video two dancers — poised, elegant, striking — struggle to come together because of the sea of dancers that surround them.

At times there are major tussles, as interlopers block their outstretched hands. But ultimately love wins the day and our stars rise toward the sky, leaving the tangle of bodies behind them.

It’s an appropriately triumphant video for the anthemic song, which conjures feelings of hope amid the chaos.

It’s unclear whether the stage show will mirror the music video in any way, though Eugent has made it known that he will share the stage with his band and two female backing singers. He added that it’s still too early to decide 100% on the staging.

Planning the staging is just the latest step in a long journey for Eugent.

In December he became the very first Eurovision 2018 act to reveal his song. And earlier this month, more than three months after winning Albania’s selection, he finally released the cut-down version of the song.

The earlier version lasted for more than four minutes. In cutting it down to the required three minutes the Albanian star crated a more efficient, high-impact piece. It packs a punch more quickly and will manage to keep the attention of viewers whose minds may have strayed in the longer version.

With 90 seconds to lose, the Albanian team have removed a verse and rearranged things a bit. The guitar isn’t as loud, so Eugent’s vocals stand out more. The chorus now starts with a quieter half before kicking into the power notes.

During this cycle of Eurovision, Albania has enjoyed some of its most positive fan reviews ever, with many applauding the uplifting nature of the Albanian song and Eugent’s solid vocals. Despite being a rocker, he’s able to cut across genres and demographics.

Albania is currently 15th in our poll, “Who should win Eurovision 2018?”

Albania will compete in Semi-Final 1 — the so-called semi-final of death — on May 8. He performs in the first half of the semi, alongside the likes of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Iceland and Israel.

@wiwibloggs – this is news and we need your reaction I think! But I guess you will have plenty opportunity because he seems to come to London, Amsterdam, Tel Aviv, Madrid? His voice is finished after all that 😉

It seems Eugent is taking every risk – and I think he is right. The SF1 is so competitive – kill it or you will be killed 😉
I love that the very high notes are back, now they are even going very very high. He should keep them for the last chorus.
The hat needs to go – for sure.

Beautuful music video for a beautfiful song. Though I prefer the original because I don’t really like changes, the song is still strong. Thank god they did a good revamp. Hope it qualifies.

I would be very grateful to get to know what Eugent said in this interview? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAXCOe8k-go

For done reason, I enjoy Albanian entries almost every year. They ask kind of sound distinctively Albanian, maybe it has something to do with harmonies, I don’t know, but they just still into my head immediately. And the language is very intriguing. For done reason, it gives me a false sense of familiarity, even though I don’t understand it, and it just sounds nice. Eugent’s vocals are great. One of my favorites this year

Ok fine, whatever floats your boat.

Eugent has proven that he’s a killer live singer, and he has a commanding stage presence. His performance will be strong and emotional, and that will surely put this song in the final.

This song is so beautiful, I hope it does really well.

@ERDI TEJECI thank you for the article.
I would love to know what Eugent said in this interview – is it possible that you translate the main answers and post them? – I would be very grateful. https://twitter.com/ESCAlbania/status/978590321587163137

Love, love, LOVE it! 😀

It is a very nice song. But the 100 percent hetero-normative video with not a single gay or lesbian or bisexual couple makes it a bit weird for quite a large part of Eurosong audience 😛

Does MMF threesome appearing in the video count?

Oh, Eugent, well done. Tough semi-final, but I still hope that this will go through and slay in the final, it certainly has the potential to do so. One of the best vocalists this year who has proven that he can sing this live. His voice has a little hard rock vibe, something I’m usually not to keen on, but since the song has this more folksy feel to it (I’m a sucker for three-four time!), I can’t stop listening to it. It’s the best Albanian entry I can remember, even better than “Suus” which I also loved at the… Read more »

This is My Winner! This is a regel Song, not the crap from Estonia, Israel, France, Italy, Belgium, Greece………….

Also let’s wipe out any speculation here: Israel has to qualify. Has any non-automatic qualifier become this big a hit and not qualified?

Azaad

It likely will unless it flops live. It probably won’t win.

Like many artists in semi 1, I haven’t ruled him out yet. Thruthfully, the only entry in semi 1 I’d call DOA is Iceland’s. The rest I could see qualifying in some way or another, even the ones I’m not as crazy about (ok, the *one* I’m not as crazy about). Gonna be pretty brutal, but I’m interested in seeing how it plays out. No matter what happens, I’m gonna be at least a little disappointed.

I’m soo happy for this video. I was kinda disappointed when the revamped version was out and the video was the same as FiK. Now this is perfect! I love everything about this song ( currently #4 on my personal list). I can’t stop listening to it everyday! As I also live away from my country and loved ones, this song speaks to me in so many levels. I’m seriously mad for the fact that this song is so underrated (I’ve started to repeat myself by now, I know). But this is such a soulful and impactful song and it’s… Read more »

This is so strange and wonderful: I don’t know why Albanian but I really enjoy the end and this does sound like a poem

The artistic and symbolic video totally complements the song’s message of yearning “mall”. I’m sure this studio version doesn’t do his voice justice. He’s likely one of the best male vocalists this year! Go, Eugent! Remains in my top 4!

This song could be a dark horse to qualify from the semi of death. I think the juries will love it

Branko
Guest

Yes, but I fear the juries will not vote in favour of this song due to being performed in Albanian (and not in English).

Jo
Guest

Juries have no taste. Look at they did to Hungary last year.

Eve

Yes, after what they did to Hungary last year, I don’t put my faith in juries anymore.

Clément

Portugal song wasn’t English but won.
Albanian language sounds beautiful to me, even though I don’t understand a word. It’s like no other language, it sounds so mystical and magical.
