Azerbaijan, Aisel, 1

The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to rank and review the 43 songs competing in Eurovision 2018. Next we turn to Azerbaijan where Aisel has “X My Heart”. Did the song make us cross? Read on to find out!

Aisel – “X My Heart”

“X My Heart” reviews

Bernardo: Generic yet addictive. While “X My Heart” doesn’t bring anything new to the table but Aisel’s vocals are compelling and ready to tear down that wall. And so am I. Empowering in its essence, I can see Azerbaijan clearly changed the pace this year to something more mainstream after last years so-so result. I don’t know if it will pay off but I’m sure Aisel will bring her A-game to Lisbon.

Score: 8/10

Bogdan: Australia, Finland and Azerbaijan sent kind of the same entry: an uplifting, empowering and flawlessly produced song performed by a great female singer. While all these are qualities, the fact that these songs are so interchangeable is a problem. While I struggle to find flaws while I listen to it, I also don’t find myself wishing to download or listen to “X My Heart”, and I’m pretty sure I won’t miss it once the Eurovision 2018 winner is crowned.

Score: 7/10

Jordi: Aisel’s “X My Heart” is current and feels positive while radiating uplifting vibes from start to finish. I can see this doing well among ballads with its proper electronic sound and its very radio friendly appeal. However, it is also true that is not offering anything different we heard before in Eurovision. While the song – the more you listen, the catchier it gets – provides an easy uplifting experience, I’m still missing the hook. In the stage though, it could be a grower!

Score: 6.5/10

Luis: After the bomb that was “Skeletons” and given Aisel’s jazz background, a generic EDM-pop song was the last thing I expected from Azerbaijan. And yet, here it is. “X My Heart” is barely different from the tracks of Australia, Finland or even the UK. The song is reminiscent of the mid-2010s, when this kind of music filled the radio stations and the heats of Melodifestivalen. Overall, it’s a decent package with nothing extraordinary. And in the end, Azerbaijan has proven many times before that they can do better than this.

Score: 6.5/10

Renske: Whereas the first version felt like a Melfest reject from 2012, the actual version made a big upgrade and sounds more like a song that could chart nowadays. I never expected Aisel to sing such kind of song and given her capacities, I expect her to slay with this. Another thing which is an advantage is that these types of songs are really easy to stage and deliver because you can stage as much show (think pyro and dancers) or as little as you want.

Score: 8/10

William: Cross your heart — and say thank you for the fierce electronic production! With a few simple tweaks to the original, Aisel and her team have given us one of the few earworms of the year. The melody is simple, inoffensive and on its own perhaps a bit too beige. But with the revamped electro finish it’s electrifying in a subtle way, getting under your skin without being too in-your-face. The lyrics, while not poetry of the first order, are sufficiently inspirational and feel good to have me hitting replay. Given Aisel’s sultry vocals and Azerbaijan’s consistently high-impact staging, Baku is on to something very good indeed.

Score: 8/10

In the Wiwi Jury we have 20 jurors but only have room for six reviews. The remaining scores are below:

Angus: 8/10

Anthony: 8.5/10

Antranig: 9/10

Chris: 7.5/10

Cinan: 6.5/10

Deban: 6.5/10

Jonathan: 7/10

Jovana: 7/10

Kristin: 6/10

Padraig: 7.5/10

Robyn: 6/10

Ron: 7/10

Sebastian: 8.5/10

Steinunn: 6/10

We have removed the highest and lowest scores prior to calculating the average. This is to remove outliers and potential bias. We have removed a low of 6 and a high of 9.

Wiwi Jury verdict: 7.22/10

It’s good, I like it a lot despite the awful lyrics. It’s just not quite as good as Australia and Finland who are doing the same thing. And I guess Cyprus to an extent. Just scraped into my top 10.

live they need to up their game from what I’ve seen… but they always do anyway so she’ll probably do fine.

There’s not much difference from the original, but the revamp worked in this case. It’s more interesting. It’s radio friendly and very current. I’ve listened much better entries from Azerbaijan.

If you want to serve fast food, then make sure it’s warm and up to date of what people want to eat right now. But after last year’s sumptuous and delicious meal, Azerbaijan is serving us fast food that has passed it’s expery date. The result is food poisoning or in this case risk of not qualifying. Of course the song is decent, yes she is a good singer, of course the production value are of high caliber and of course they will put up a show in Lisbon. But all this cannot disguise that it is a very generic… Read more »

BAD SWEDISH POP SONG ! NO FINAL

It’s not a bad song by any means, but I have a hard time appreciating it because it is quite cheesy and unoriginal. I understand where ‘luna moon me up’ comes from, but it still makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, like most of the other lyrics. I think good staging and a killer live performance will rescue this song, but to be honest I have a feeling this will flop.

Aisel owns a cool voice. This xis my heartis don’t stands out of similar songs, but some effort in arrange was put to make it sound relatively breezy. Song pretends to be addictive but generic melody keeps nailing back potential here. Heck, it knocks back even singer. She’ll probably need to bring lots of charisma on stage.

I cannot understand why they are rating the videos from 1 to 10, not to 12 and why they make rating as decimal. There are no decimals in real ESC. Also, what is the point to rate videos instead of live performances? In ESC people vote for live performances, not the videos… Sorry…

I just don’t understand why people are so butt-hurt about the lyrics. It is not the Eurovision Lyrics Contest. And people saying this is dated? Then I guess 50% of the current songs that are dominating the charts are dated. I would say this is a very well-produced track melodically. I can get people writing off this is generic and non-surprising. But people need to remember, not every entry needs to be revolutionary or fresh. There is room for every kind of music and I am happy that Azerbaijan decided to send in an earworm like this. People can hate… Read more »

People who defend LUNA MOON ME UP by saying that it’s a play on her name meaning, ARE YOU SERIOUS?! How in the world can it be a good choice and a smart move? I actually can speak some Turkish and I’ve known the meaning of Aisel for years but it never occured to me that lunamoonmeup is about her name. Like, for example if Alexander Rybak randomly started singing “defender defender”, you’d be legimately shocked and no one would say “Wait, Alexander means “defender” in Greek! Wow…really inflated jury results there for Azerbaijan there. Really does not deserve a high place on this ranking with nonsensical lyrics such a shame “Luna Moon Me Up”….if this was Ireland’s entry, I think it should safe to say the ranking would be much lower. One positive about this song is Aisel, what a stunning woman with a beautiful smokey jazz voice. But that’s where the positives end. I think that it will do very well with both televoting and juries. Somehow this song attracts non eurovision fans more it seems. But obviously it’s not so supported with Eurovision fandom, so Azerbaijan’s final result will most likely surprise us all. She’s vocally strong so we can also expect a good performance from the singer in Lisbon.

Lyrics are the obvious weakness of this song and they know it, changing it to a more club-like tone. If you ignore them, it’s a decent pop tune. Not groundbreaking, but listenable. Evident how it got the approval rate it had, but this is a bit 50/50. Has the potential to end high by a faction but low by others.

This is a very well produced mainstream pop song and is a very nice radio-friendly tune. I’m having a bad time understanding some of the lyrics, but it’s still very enjoyable for me. It’ll definitely appeal to a lot of non-eurovision fans in May, while the Italian song you compare to this song won’t do as good as some of you think. That song has a very strong message indeed. ”strong catchy melody” is exactly what Azerbaijan is lacking, but you do you. Shall I tell you what Azerbaijan has? A boring, soulless, lazy song with crappy lyrics, sung by a good singer with a Special voice, who probably hates her own song since she’s actually a jazz singer. Selling your Musical Soul to sing such a bland song must be great.

How past results, flash and ‘big names’ can influence the Wiwi jury’s score is embarressing! This song is SO GENERIC! The melody is boring, the lyrics are laughable and her voice is not making the difference either… And the way you guys speak about the revamp is so over the top. About “nearly everything in music is pop music.” Interestingly pop didn’t appear at Eurovision until 1965. So the first NINE contests had no pop entries at all! Astonishing.
As for 2018, we have influences from rock, metal, jazz, K-Pop, folk, rap, EDM, Dubstep, classical ballads, funk, opera… so Pop does indeed dominate, but for how long? Personally I’m hoping for a Eurovision Opera Contest in 2019. 😀

It’s 10 times better than Italy
If the song of Italy was representing Albania it would not even qualify

That’s your opinion. Italy’s song is a gem! Albania’s song is a gem too. Azerbaijan is light years away in terms of quality!

And why do people rate the upcoming staging too? Rate the song for what it is, not for what it will be, since the rehearsals haven’t started yet. Classic example of voting for the country’s name and its record qualification rate and not for the song itself.

When we know what the staging will be, I tend to take notice about that in my ratings. For example, it will influence how I’ll rate Sweden, as it influenced when I reviewed Denmark, since I try to see them as Eurovision acts, more than songs. I don’t think those countries will change much on their performances, so I can use that already. And there are a few other examples, like Estonia and Latvia, that also seem to have a full package ready. Packages that may not work the same way when adapted to a huge stage. But most countries… Read more »

Yes, I absolutely agree. Of course staging is important and it needs to be included in the rating system and it makes sense when you do it for countries that you have seen perform live and have an idea how the staging will be ( Sweden, Denmark, Malta etc). But in other cases, when all we’ve been offered is a music video, it doesn’t make any sense. It’s fun to always be on the same page Sabrina 🙂

By the way, I wonder if some countries will try to capture the essence of their videos. Mikolas already mentioned he’ll do that. I hope Netta, Sennek, Sevak and Saara also can get some inspiration from their videos.

It is always challenging to rate a song in a whole, especially since performances might vary and change. Personally, I tend to include the impact the performance made, definitely the vocal quality and the passion / connectability the artist makes with the audience. However, I don’t include wardrobe, lighting, camera angles and props in my reviews right now. Any of these can be a key element to the qualification, though, but: a) they are not strictly connected to the song itself, b) they are definitely not a locked deal for ESC, even though I agree that many of countries will… Read more »

I try to do the same Colin. My focus is on the song, but I also use everything we know so far about each act, especially those things that can make them grow on Eurovision. Sometimes I write about things that maybe can happen in Lisbon, but when I do that, I don’t include them on the rating.

AZERBAIJAN – It’s an uptempo from a usually successful country… and I guess that is all that is needed for it to receive high scores. The song is very basic and has a serious lack of identity. It’s very cheesy and yet, also kind of predictable. Sure, Moldova is even cheesier than this, but the key difference is – they know they are and play to that card. Azeri writers probably wanted to make a deep, heartfelt song which can achieve miracles. There is *nothing* particulary innovative in this. It’s not deep enough to make any sort of emotional impact,… Read more »

Hi Colin. I’m not sure that the songwriters set out to write something particularly deep. Maybe it’s a little personal, but mostly it’s just cute, catchy and cheerful. The music video is pleasantly shot; everyone is happy. The music backing track even does an octave-fifth slide, which reminds me of a theremin. A theremin is an instrument that was often used in early sci-fi movies, so it’s a cheeky callback to films about humans on the moon… it’s not deep, but it’s silly, cute and clever. I hope that males sense. You are right about Aisel though – a beautiful… Read more »

Aww 🙂 You disarm me with the ‘cute’ comment. It’s somewhat underwhelming for me, but I might like it better later on. Aisel is great and the video is very good too.

While I am not big fan of lyrics such as ‘Luna moon me up’, I think this is one of the more decent songs of 2017. I expect it to sail through the final and then sneak to the left hand side of the scoreboard with the help from dream team.

8/10

That’s good and all, but we’re in 2018 where there are much better songs than this.

Why when it comes to Eurovision only Nordic countries or Australia are allowed to send mainstream pop songs?
This is actually very GOOD pop, much better than Sweden and much more current than Australia , which for the last 3 years send 90s songs

Last three years send 90s songs?? You should check your spotify lists of what you have been listening to because they’re probably not so current! Sweden and Australia are the only two countries keep sending standard pop songs every year and they got so much hate almost every year. You said they’re the only countries allowed to send pop songs? Don’t be ridiculous! Azerbaijan should at least use their composers to make a pop song for God’s sake! Stop buying songs from Sweden! You’re not Sweden 2.0! People get pissed with Azer because they don’t even try to use their… Read more »

The melody is very catchy 10/10
The productions is very current 10/10
The temper of her voice is very interesting 10/10
The lyrics are not the best they could be that I like the fact that they are not ordinary pop lyrics and I find the line “luna moon me up” very creative. 8/10

I love when in the most reviews it’s stated that the song is a generic nothing, and it still gets an average score of above 7… …this said, it actually makes sense. Generic, inoffensive songs are less likely to be loved or hated, so for majority of people they will stand somewhere close to the middle. There are lower chances for a very low score, since it’s not “bad”, it’s just “generic”. And yeah. I don’t like the song. It’s, wait for it, generic. I have a feeling Azerbaijan and Finland will cancel each other out this year, since they… Read more »

I really like this song a lot.
And I don’t understand why when it comes to Eurovision we describe a mainstream pop song as “generic” , “not different”.
Why should it be different? This is the biggest advantage of pop music: it’s not different that is why it appeals to everyone.

It’s good to have some diversity, though. Some people can listen to one song for the whole day. After 3-4 listens of one song I’m already bored, no matter how much I love it. And there are more people who like to have different genres and styles in the competition, as well as songs different from what you can hear on the radio, for example.

“What about us” was the song that was streamed the most in 2017 and it has nothing “different”.

That’s exactly what I’m saying.
In other words: not everyone enjoys pop music, that’s why these people want something that’s different. That’s pretty understandable.

They want something different so they keep bashing pop songs? I don’t like country, rock, and jazz but I won’t attack them for being boring and generic in their own genre. It’s a matter of taste! Sick of these people hating pop songs! It’s like their music taste is better or what? Unfortunately, most of the people in the world love pop songs and that’s money!

Pandaman

So… even if they “hate” a song, what’s wrong with that? They have full right to do it, just like you have the right to love it. It’s not like attacking a song or genre is attacking an artist or anyone’s opinion. I’m not very keen on most pop songs (though, obviously, there are some I like) but it doesn’t automatically translate into me disliking pop in general, or people listening to pop (the latter being completely ridiculous).

So, hating songs =/= hating opinions or people.

@Luis “the song reminds you mid 2012”?????????? When was the last time you listened to the Spotify charts or anything else than Eurovision songs?
You can say many things about this song but is for sure is that it’s very current. It’s like all those songs that were released last winter. Rita Ora, Sia , Pink they all released very melodic pop songs. This is the trend in music now days

I thought EXACTLY the same thing when I read this comment. This song is nowhere near 2012 music and for sure it’s not EDM!

You gotta be kidding me, who are those people? Imo this is the worst song of the year, annoying, boring, monotonous AND ENORMLY GENERIC. Like wtf? This seems like it’s written and sung by a robot. If this qualifies, I’m done.

A higher score than Italy? Jesus hell.

This is a generic pop song, and not in a good way like, say, Cyprus. I hope it doesn’t take the place of a more deserving song in the final (and there are plenty of them in semi 1).
